When a great man dies, the light left to them,
continues to illuminate the path of humanity for many, many years.
Henry Longfellow
I am sure that when a person learns a foreign language it is necessary to learn about the history and culture of the country. This knowledge will help you very much in learning the language and you will know the country better, you’ll be able to feel the language better.
Today we are going to speak about outstanding writers and poets of Great Britain and Russia . You’ll know some interesting facts of their biography, you’ll hear the poems, and listen to music. My project is devoted to the greatest masters of words famous in the world- their names are R. Burns and I . Bunin. What unites them, people from different countries and historic times? …. Let’s say it some minutes later….And now it’s time to start our investigation ..
So, what gives a person inspirarion, helps to develop his natural abilities????
Certainly, the family and place of living, where he spends the childhood.
Robert Burns was the most democratic poet of the 18th century. His birthday is celebrated in Scotland as a national holiday. Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, was born on January 25, 1759, in a small clay cottage at Alloway, in Ayrshire, Scotland. His father, William Burns, was a poor farmer. He built this small clay cottage with his own hands. There were seven children in the family, and Robert was the eldest.
His father knew the value of a good education, and he tried to give his children the best education he could afford. Robert was sent to school at the age of six, but as his father could not pay for the two sons, Robert and his brother Gilbert attended school in turn. When not at school, the boys helped their father with his work in the fields. When the teacher left, the poet's father taught the children himself.
Robert liked reading books. His favourite writer was Shakespeare.
Reading and writing, arithmetic, English grammar, history, literature, French and Latin – that was Robert Burn’s education. At the age of 15, in 1774 he started to write poems.
My father was a farmer upon the Carrick border, O,
And carefully he bred me in decency and order, O;
He bade me act a manly part, though I had ne'er a farthing, O;
For without an honest manly heart, no man was worth regarding
Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin, born Oct. 10 [Oct. 22, New Style], 1870, Voronezh, Russia, Father Bunin lived widely, carefree, and bankrupt, Bunin family moved to the village of Ozerki of the Yelets area , which inherited the mother of Ivan Bunin. Senior brother Ivan Bunin - Julius Alekseevich - had a great influence on the formation of the writer. He was a brother like a home teacher. Ivan Alekseevich wrote about him: "He walked with me all the gymnasium course, was engaged with me in tongues, read me first-fruits of psychology, philosophy, social Sciences and the natural Sciences; in addition, we are without end, led with him talking about literature". In 10 years he started his education at the Yelets man's gymnasium . He studied well, the memory was excellent. The first poem was published, when Bunin was 17 years old. At 18, he went to work in the newspaper “Orlovsky Vestnik”.
Both these great writers wrote a lot about their Motherland and Nature.
Burns wrote many poems in English but his best verses are written in the dialect of his own country, Ayrshire. In his best poems he sang the beauty of his motherland, Scottish Highlands.
My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart’s in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe –
My heart’s in the Highlands wherever I go.
Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,
The birthplace of valour, the country of worth,
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands forever I love.
Farewell to the mountains high covered with snow,
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below,
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods,
Farewell to the torrents and loud pouring floods.
My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart’s in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe –
My heart’s in the Highlands wherever I go.
Life on the farm, communication with the peasants, with nature, have found their reflection in the works of Ivan Bunin. Ivan was a man more impressive, with a vivid imagination. Write it became the “as something in itself early and invisible”. The first poems written in 8 years.
A city in the fate of Bunin will be the beginning, the «divine point», where disperse the line of his life and creative destiny. Yelets, artistically transformed and at the same time historically real, appears in many of his writings : («the Life of Arseniev», «Above the city», «Late hour», «Easy breathing», etc.) as an ontological model. He wrote about spring as the symbol of life.
The song “ How beautiful the spring is” proves it. His poem “ The happiness we always just remember in Russian verse. *
What human qualities the poems valued most of all
-pride,honesty,dignity,courage,intellect.Sometimes their poems seem to have been written about our daily problems
R.Burns wrote about people, about everyday life. The heroes of his mother's stories became the heroes of his poems.
The crimson blossom charms the bee,
The summer sun the swallow:
So dear this tuneful gift to me From lovely Isabella.
Her portrait fair upon my mind Revolving time shall mellow,
And mem'ry's latest effort find The lovely Isabella.
No Bard nor lover's rapture this
In fancies vain and shallow!
She is, so come my soul to bliss,
The Lovely Isabella
The theme of LOVE had the special part in the works of both poets.
Many of his songs Burns devoted to his wife, the woman who had been the great love of all his life. The poet’s song “O My Luve’s Like a Red,Red Rose” is one of the most loved lyrical songs.
My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose
0, my luve is like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June.
0, my love is like a melodie,
That's sweetly play'd in tune.
As fair thou art, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I,
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun!
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands of life shall run.
And fare the weel, my only luve!
And fare the well awhile!
And I will come again, my love.
Tho it were ten thousand mile!
Love is the first to fit in your heart to the whole world and again to give it to someone...”
The feelings to the woman, all its shades, and the great power of nature and its beauty - leading themes of Bunin poetry .
Bunin made his name as a short-story writer with such masterpieces as “Gospodin iz San-Frantsisko,” the title piece in one of his collections (1916; The Gentleman from San Francisco). His last book of stories, Tyomnyye allei (Dark Avenues), was published in 1943Bunin's longer works include Derevnya (1910; The Village), Mitina lyubov (1925; Mitya's Love), Zhizn Arsenyeva (“The Life of Arsenev) –they all was about the life and love.
The best translations of Burn’s poetry into Russian were made by Samuel Marshak. He translated 215 poems. Some of them became songs.
Unfortunately, in 1920, he had to leave Russia forever and go abroad, to France where spend the rest of his life, but nostalgia has remained for all life.
Some Bunin works, R.Burns poems were translated into English, German, French and other languages. Some of his poems became the songs- «
Nowadays the people often refer to the poetry of these great masters . The native people and the guests and tourists visit the museums in honour of them.
So , we ‘ve talked about two of the greatest masters of words. And I’d like to ask you the question we started with. What feelings do they both have in common? Really. LOVE/ PATRIOTISM/ PERCEPTION . They reflected it in their works. Both of them.
