LESSON SCENARIO.

«Getting from A to В »  

General  Objective:  by the end of the lesson pupils will be able to make a dialogue `buying a ticket`

Specific  Objectives:

  • To practice speaking skills
  • To practice reading for the main idea and for specific words
  • To practice listening skills
  • To practice front, individual, pair and group work

ENTRY

Good morning! Nice to meet you! Sit down, please. How are you today?

Please, open your copy-books. Write down the date and the day. Today we are going to talk about transport.

THE BODY OF THE LESSON

LANGUAGE  AWARENES (2 min)

Look at the screen.  Work in pairs to find the types of transport in the photos.  

Write FAST at the top of  your copybooks and SLOW at the bottom. Put types of transport in order from fast to slow. Work individually and then compare with the partner.

- How do you usually travel to school? Students work in pairs.  Discuss how the various people travel

READING (5 min)

Pre – reading 

Activity 1

Look at the photos.  Read about Karen and answer the questions. Where is she? Where does she want to go?

Activity 2 

Read about four ways to get to JFK Airport and complete the table.

Post – reading 

Activity 3.

Work in pairs. Decide the best way for Karen to go to the airport.

Listen to someone working out how she should travel. Was your answer the same?

PRACTISE (3 min)

What verb do you need when you talk about ability?

Activity 1.

Gina is asking about things you can and can`t do in New York. Listen and mark the sentences (? X <)

Activity 2.

Write 8 sentences about things you can and can`t do in our city. (You can`t smoke on buses/ You can drive in the city centre)

LISTENING (8 min)

Activity 1.  

Karen is at JFK Airport. Look at her travel itinerary and answer the questions.

What time are her flight?

Which airports do they go to?

What are the flight number?

Activity 2.  “Matching”

The phrases are commonly heard in all international airports. Match the phrases and meanings.

Activity 3.  

Look through these questions then listen and answer.

Where does Karen check in?

What is the problem with her flight?

What is the gate number for her flight?

Karen is now at Heathrow Airport, London. She is in transit. Listen the next episode at Heathrow Airport and answer.

At Heathrow Airport, where dose Karen go?

What is her gate number?

Production (10 min)

Activity 1. “Buying the ticket” 

Florence is in London. She wants to travel to Paris. Put the conversation in a ticket office in the correct order.

Then listen and check.

Activity 2. “Making a dialogues”

Read the information and make the dialogues

So, today we have learned how to buying tickets. You have known some new words.

Home work

 Your home task is to learn new words by heart and write about how you use public transport.

  1. You can take a taxi but it is often slowly because of the traffic. The journey takes about an hour and costs $ 35 (and also a tip of 15-20% for the driver)
  2. You can take a subway (the “A”  train) to Howard Beach-JFK Station and then a bus to the airport terminal, a journey of about 90 minutes. The subway costs & 2 and the bus is free.
  3. You can walk through Central Park to the Museum of Natural History (about 20 minutes). From there, you can take the subway to Howard Beach-JFK Station ($2) and then an AirTrain to JFK Airport Station ($5). It takes about an hour on the subway and another twelve minutes on the AirTrain.
  4. You can take the subway to Grand Central Station. It takes 5 minutes and costs $2. From there you can take the New York Airport Express bus. The journey takes about an hour and costs $13. In the afternoon, the buses leave every twenty minutes at three o`clock, twenty past three, twenty to four, etc.

You would like to know the cost, the time of the train, the platform number and the arrival time. Write your questions and then speak to the ticket clerk.

Student В : It`s 11.30 in the morning. You have information about trains to Glasgow in Scotland from London. The next train is at 12.00. It arrives in Glasgow at 5.30. It costs $33 for a single ticket and $55 for a return. It leaves from platform 5.
