Atlanta, Georgia Georgia is the largest East state of the Mississippi River . It stretches 400 miles north to south and 200 miles east to west. Georgia, named for King George II, was the 4 th state to join the Union, on January, 2 1788. Atlanta is its capital.

The nature of Georgia The climate of Georgia is subtropical. It is famous for its mountains, not very high, but excellent for hiking, rafting and wildlife watching. The main rivers of Georgia are the Chattahoochee River, the Flint River, the Savannah River.

The history of Atlanta. The history of Atlanta dates back to 1836, when Georgia decided to build a railroad to the U.S. Midwest and a location was chosen to be the line's terminus. In 1839 homes and a store were built there and the settlement grew. During the American Civil War, Atlanta became the target of a major Union campaign, and in 1864 Union General Sherman's troops set on fire and destroyed the city's assets and buildings, save churches and hospitals. After the war the population grew rapidly, as did manufacturing.
