THE STAGE HISTORY OF “HAMLET” IN RUSSIA

This year (2006) has been declared the year of Shakespeare. Countless books, articles, scientific works  have been written about Shakespeare and his immortal woks. This report is a very modest attempt to investigate the influence of one of Shakespeare’s tragedies - “Hamlet” on Russian culture. On the other hand I have tried to examine how different interpretations of the tragedy on the Russian stage reflected the changes in Russian society and culture. I have tried to trace the stage history of “Hamlet” in Russia in the 20^th century, from Stalinist years till the end of Soviet era.
