This year (2006) has been declared the year of Shakespeare. Countless books, articles, scientific works have been written about Shakespeare and his immortal woks. This report is a very modest attempt to investigate the influence of one of Shakespeare’s tragedies - “Hamlet” on Russian culture. On the other hand I have tried to examine how different interpretations of the tragedy on the Russian stage reflected the changes in Russian society and culture. I have tried to trace the stage history of “Hamlet” in Russia in the 20th century, from Stalinist years till the end of Soviet era.
