The snow leopard (Irbis) is the national animal of Russia.

Appearance Irbis is a big cat with body 103-130 cm and very long tail 90-105 cm. It weighs 30-50 kgs. Snow leopard is white and grey colour with black spots. It lives in mountains of Central Asia.

Hunting Irbis hunts big animals like deer, roe, sheep, mountain-goat, wild boar.

Rare animal This animal is very beautiful and noble. Now Irbis is a very rare kind of leopard and it is in a Red book of Russia. Snow leopard is one of three symbols of Olympic games in Sochi 2014.

Population and protected areas Th e total wild population of the snow leopard was estimated at only 4,080 (see table below) . Many of these estimates are rough and outdated. Snow leopard in heraldry Snow leopard has symbolic meaning for Turkish people of Central Asia, where the animal is known as irbis or bars, so it is widely used in heraldry and as an emblem. The snow leopard is a national symbol for Tatars and Kazakhs. A snow leopard is on the official seal of the city of Almaty.
