Introduction

Tongue twisters are a great way to practice and improve pronunciation and fluency. They can help also to improve accents because it is one of the ways of repetition of one sound. They are not just for kids, but also used by actors, politicians and public speakers, who wants to sound clear.

The aim of my research is determining if tongue twisters can help to learn English. This paper explains various possibilities for the use of tongue twisters. This research was conducted to establish whether young learners read tongue twisters.

The objectives: English tongue twisters.

My hypothesis: tongue twisters can help to learn the English language.

1.  The history of “tongue twisters”

Perhaps everyone knows the story of the ancient Greek philosopher Demosthenes. Filling his mouth with stones, he tried to achieve a clear pronunciation of passages of poems, thereby getting rid of defects in his speech. Daily training helped him to improve his speech. Tongue twisters have been screwing up speaking abilities around the world for centuries. As entertaining as tripping over tricky terms can be, early English twisters were also used to teach pupils proper speech. In a note to teachers in his 1878 book Practical Elocution, J.W. Shoemaker reminded them of the "higher motive" of these confounding sayings: "To The Teacher—While many of the exercises ... may create amusement in a class, a higher motive than 'Amusement' has prompted their insertion. Practice is here afforded in nearly every form of difficult articulation."

2.  The meaning of the expression” Tongue twister”

Tongue Twister is the genre of oral folklore. Initially tongue twisters appeared as a word game, fun for kids and adults.  This is an exciting game, which valued the ability to pronounce difficult words clearly and quickly. What is said about tongue twisters in Russian dictionaries and English encyclopedias.

“Tongue twister, word or group of words made difficult to articulate by a close sequence of similar consonantal sounds. Tongue twisters are often passed on for generations, becoming a rich part of folklore”  Encyclopedia Britannica | Britannica.com

3. Tongue twisters - helper in pronunciation

In English tongue twisters are called tongue twisters-literally "tongue twisters". And indeed, when we say a patter for the first time, we have a braided language, and it does not matter in what language we say (even in their native language they are complex). But the fact is the native language we have known  since childhood. It's another thing when we start learning another language. When we begin to get used to foreign sounds, it is difficult for us to pronounce them, they are too unusual for the brain and speech organs. We learn words, sentences, have an idea of pronunciation. But this is not enough.

It is not enough just to know how to pronounce the sound, you need to practice their pronunciation, so that the brain learns to form the necessary signals, and the organs of speech to perform the required movements. And then we come to the aid of the most common tongue twisters.

Tongue twisters are exercises that speed up this process. They appeared in order to speak as clearly as possible, and if you are a public speaker, your life is one big rehearsal and no chance to miss. At the same time, people who learn English often hear the phrase: "Do not worry about the pronunciation, it is worth worrying about your own silence." In part, we can agree with this. Yes, only partly. Do not envy those who know the rules and is silent, afraid to say the wrong word or forget to put the article.

4. The Use of tongue twisters

We have formulated some tips that will help to make the work with tongue twisters more effective:

 A. Select the tongue twister on the sound you want to work out.

Refine unfamiliar words and understand the meaning of tongue twisters. Note which letters and letter combinations denote this sound in different words.

Pay attention to the correct articulation of the sound.

B. Read all the words of the patter that contain the sound being worked out. Pay attention to the correct pronunciation. In a patter it is necessary to overcome all difficult sound combinations. It is important to pronounce a complex word in syllables, slowly, but without any difficulty.

C. Pronounce each patter first silently, but articulating, then go to the whisper and only then – out loud, clearly pronouncing each sound, first at a slow pace, then in a fast, but remember the clarity in the pronunciation. At the same time, first of all, it is necessary to provide a clear pronunciation and only in the second – to accelerate the pace. If at the usual pace to read the patter without error is not possible, then first realize its meaning to the head there was a clear video, and read slowly, by syllables. Repeat the patter until you read it without hesitation. Then gradually increase the pace.

D. Say the tongue twister intelligently, using logical stress and proper intonation. Try to remember the tongue Twister. To improve your pronunciation, repeat tongue twisters every day. But in order to get a real effect, tongue twisters should be spoken aloud.

 E. It is good to work with tongue twisters on the recorder. This allows you to hear yourself from the outside and effectively correct the shortcomings.

5. Memo on working with tongue twisters

This paper explains various possibilities for the use of tongue twisters. This research was conducted to establish whether young learners consider tongue twisters.

A. First of all, they are built for the repetition one sound many times: PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!

B. In any place at any time. As a rule, tongue twisters are always quite short so they are quickly remembered and you can repeat them anywhere: at home, on the way home.

C. Cheerfully. Easy to remember. They are primitively simple. But first you have to make an effort to work out the correct and clear pronunciation of the expression.
