1. Family

3. Sport

Russia is a nation of sport-lovers.

A lot of sports are popular in our country, such as hockey, skating, figure skating, skiing, swimming, football, basketball and volleyball.

For many people professional sport is a possibility to become famous, see the world, earn money and make new friends.

For me sport is a hobby. It helps me to stay healthy, gives me real pleasure, helps me to overcome difficulties and makes new friends, gives me a chance to get self-confidence.

Some people are fond of risky sports, such as white-water rafting, rock climbing, sky diving ….   .

As for me, I can understand the people who are addicted to risky sports. But personally, I am not a risk taker.

4. Music

Music is everywhere: in the street, at home, over the radio, on TV, in the shops and in the parks.

People all over the world are fond of music.

They listen to music, they dance to music, they play musical instruments.

People’s musical interests range from pop and rock music to classical music.

My favourite style of music is …   .

Good music helps me to remember happy times and forget the problems of everyday life.

It helps me to relax and makes me more energetic.

Music transforms our feelings and enriches our minds. It is a source of inspiration.

5. Reading

We can’t live without books.

There are different kinds of books in the world, such as thrillers, historical novels, science fiction, adventure books, fantasy, detectives and others.

Reading is an essential part of our life.

In books you can find answers to all your questions.

They tell us about modern world and ancient times.

They expand our outlook.

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body”.

Reading is the perfect way to spend free time and not to feel bored.

Books must be our friends during our life.

The members of my family like reading.

I enjoy reading ……………….   . My favourite writer is …………..   .

I wouldn’t mind reading …   .

6. Ecological problems

Our planet is in serious danger.

Environmental problems are urgent in the modern world.

We have air pollution, land pollution and water pollution.

The air is polluted by industry and traffic.

The water is polluted by factories that pour poisonous wastes into rivers and seas. The land is polluted because of our activities. The world’s temperature is going up and the climate is changing.

People are destroying the environment by building huge cities and power stations, developing industries, cutting down trees.

It’s time to save our planet. There are simple things we should do to protect the environment. We must keep our cities and towns clean and mustn’t drop litter in public places. We can recycle paper, bottles and plastic. We should take care of birds and animals. We can plant trees and create parks, clean rivers and create footpaths. If we take care now, there will be some hope for the future.

7. Shopping

Some people like shopping, others don’t but they all have to go shopping. There are a lot of markets, supermarkets and stores.

There you can buy food, clothes, shoes, electrical goods, TV sets, books and many other things.

My favourite shopping centre  is …… . It is very  comfortable and amusing to do the shopping there. If  you are tired of shopping you can have a rest at the food court or go to the cinema which is in the same building.

Some of my friends hate shopping. As for me I (hate/ enjoy) shopping. I (don’t) like choosing things.

What I find most difficult is buying presents because tastes differ.

8. Great Britain

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the official name of the British Kingdom.

It consists of 4 countries. They are England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Their capitals are London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. The UK is separated from Europe by the English Channel.

The area of Great Britain is over 242 000 square km.

The UK is an island state. Mountains are not very high. The highest mountain is Ben Nevis in Scotland (1344 m).

The rivers in GB are not very long. The Severn is the longest river (354 km).

The country has many beautiful lakes. The Lake District is famous all over the world.

The largest cities of Great Britain are London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow and others.

The population of the UK is over 67 mln. English is the official language.

9. School

There are different types of schools in Russia: primary schools, secondary schools, gymnasiums and lyceums.

Education in Russia is free at most schools but there are some private schools where pupils pay for the studies.

 Every boy and girl goes to school at the age of 6 or 7.

At school we spend the most important years of our lives. At this time we grow, make friends and learn to understand life. School years remain in our hearts forever.

After finishing the 9th form, young people can continue their education in the 10th form. They can also enter a college.

After finishing the 11th form students take the National State Examinations. After that they can enter a university, go to or a college or start working. 

10. Hobbies

A hobby is something that you like doing in your free time.

Different people enjoy doing different things.

My friends are fond of …..   .

As for me I’m keen on …   .

There are plenty of activities, such as travelling, reading, doing sports, watching sports on TV, hitchhiking, playing computer games, listening to music, going to the cinema, knitting, sewing, taking photos, collecting things, looking after animals …   .

Hobbies help us to relax, make us happy and brighten our life.

11. Fashion and Clothes

For most young people fashion is very important. They think about it very much. They look at fashion magazines and see a lot of tall, slim models. They admire them and wish they could look more like them.

There are people who follow the latest styles because they want to look more attractive. They believe the appearance is very important. They spend much of their time and money trying to look like the ideal man or woman.

However, there are people who take no notice of clothes the designers produce. They prefer wearing casual clothes. They simply try to look as clean and tidy.

To most young people dressing like their friends is the best way to be accepted.

I know there are certain brand names that are popular today, for example, …   .

12. Contacting

A young generation is fond of communication.

There are a lot of means of communication nowadays. The most popular one is the Internet.

A lot of young people spend plenty of time working on the computers. The Internet seems really a good fun.

You may send emails to friends from different countries and get their answers at once. You can talk to them on Skype. It’s easy and quick.

Moreover, young people have mobile phones and they can always be contacted any time of the day and night.

13. Choosing a Career

There are a lot of prestigious jobs in economic, tourist or IT fields.

When choosing a future career we should consider different factors. In my opinion, money is one of the most important factors when you make a choice. There are highly paid jobs and low- paid jobs. And everybody wants to earn as much as possible.

Job conditions should be also take into account.

On the other hand, it is good when you get satisfaction from your job. It’s very important to choose a profession that suits your interests. A job should be interesting and socially important.

To make the right choice, you should take into account your character.

As for me, I would like to become a …   .

I think it’s a very exciting job. Besides, it’s highly paid.  For the job I need to be reliable, well-organized, creative, disciplined.

I know that to be a good specialist in any field, I should have good education and extensive knowledge of the world.

14. English Today

The English language is the first language of about 400 million. It has become the “new Latin” of the century. English is the second or a foreign language for 600 million. At present no other language is better suited to play the role of a world language.

There are many reasons for this popularity. English is the standard language for all kinds of international communication. It’s the language of businesspeople, scientists, politicians, sportsmen and singers. English dominates in the world’s trade, computers and media.

English is the most popular language in Russia. If you know English you can enjoy foreign films and music. Moreover, it is very useful when you travel abroad. Besides, you can communicate better if you know English.

As for me, I learn English because I like the language, I want to travel abroad, have a good job and communicate with foreigners. I’m sure English will help me in my life.

15. The Russian Federation

Russia has been officially known as the Russian Federation since 1991. Before that Russia was one of the republics of the USSR.

Russia is the largest country in the world. It is nearly twice the size of the USA and it spans 11 time zones and 2 parts of the world. Nearly 146 million people live in Russia, giving it the seventh largest population in the world. The people consist of 190 different nationalities. Russians make up 82 per cent of the population. The territory of Russia covers over 17 million sq. km.

There are a lot of Russian symbols. One of them is the Russian national flag. The flag is made up of 3 stripes: white, blue and red. They symbolize nobleness, honesty, courage and love. Another Russian symbol is a double-headed eagle. There are other Russian symbols, for example, Red Square and the Spasskaya Tower.

According to the Constitution adopted in 1993, the Russian Federation is a presidential republic. The political system has 3 branches of power: legislative, executive and judicial. The Federal Assembly is made up of 2 houses: the Federal Council and the State Duma. The president is the head of state in Russia and he is elected by people. There are many political parties in Russia. The most well-known are the “Unity” Party, the Communist Party and the Liberal Democratic Party.

17. Healthy Way of Life

People nowadays are more health-conscious than they used to be. They understand that good health is above wealth. To be healthy we should avoid different bad habits that can affect our health.

In my opinion, smoking and drinking alcohol the worst ones. Smoking causes heart and lung diseases such as pneumonia, cough and cancer. Besides, it makes your teeth yellow and skin unhealthy. Fortunately, in recent years smoking received a lot of bad publicity. Smoking has been banned in most public places.

Other dangerous habits are eating unhealthy food and overeating. Obesity leads to serious diseases. What is tasty is not always healthy. The fashion for healthy food is growing. A lot of people try to improve their fitness. There are a lot of ways to lose weight.

To my mind, the only way to stay healthy is going in for sport. To be healthy, you should spend a lot of time in the open air. It is useful to go for a walk. I think it is very important to be fit, healthy and it is necessary to take care of your health. Personally, I believe that sleeping eight or nine hours, getting up early, regular meals, a healthy diet and going in for sports are really a good way to live.

 18. Travelling

A lot of people travel nowadays. It is not surprising because distances between countries are becoming shorter due to the development of transport. The main means of public transport are buses, trains, ships and planes.

Of course, air travel is quicker than other means of transport. Besides, if you have a window seat, you can get a wonderful view of the beautiful cloudy sky. However, flying always involves delays. Finally, air travel is more expensive than any other form of transport.

To go by train is more practical and economical than by plane. It is one of the most popular ways of travelling. It’s cheaper than travelling by air. Modern trains are comfortable. You can enjoy a splendid view of the countryside.

Some people prefer travelling by sea which is very exciting. If the weather is fine you can relax on the deck and enjoy the view of the sea. Modern ships are usually very comfortable. But if you are sea-sick travelling by ship is not a good idea

A lot of people travel by car because it’s rather convenient. They don’t have to buy tickets and carry heavy luggage. They can stop wherever they wish and spend as much time as they like at any place..

To sum up, I can say that we have a lot of different means of transport and people can choose the way of travelling according to their aims and preferences.

As for me, I like travelling. I’m fond of all means of transport, but my favourite one is travelling by …   .

19. Russian Holidays

People all over the world celebrate New Year’s Day, Christmas and Easter. In Russia New Year’s Day is the most popular holiday. It is a family event.

People decorate the New Year tree, put presents under the tree and when the Kremlin clock strikes 12, they see the New Year in.

There are dates that are memorable to Russian people. They are the Victory Day, the Women’s Day, the Day of Spring and Labour, the Independence Day, the Country Defendant’s Day, the Constitution Day.

Moreover, there are professional days in Russia: Teacher’s Day, Miner’s Day and others.

It is very important that traditions survive in the country. A lot of people try to follow the traditions.

Personally I enjoy celebrating holidays. It’s a good way to bring the family together. It’s a good chance to meet your friends and relatives.

I think the holidays are a part of our culture and we should keep up the traditions.

20. Holidays

Holidays are a great time for us. We can do almost what we want.

We can visit different countries, go to the countryside, watch TV, listen to music, play computer games and sleep a lot.

It is a good way to escape from stresses and strain of everyday routine. Holidays are supposed to do us good. They relax us, take our mind off the studies, brighten our life. They recharge our batteries and make us ready to start the work at school.

21. Mass media

Mass communication has revolutionized the modern world. The term media includes any channel of information through which information can pass, for example, TV, the Internet, newspapers and magazines.

Media plays an important role. It conveys information to the public and influences public opinion.

TV is a wonderful source of information. It is the best way to spend free time and not to feel bored. It gives you an opportunity to travel all over the world, see different people, learn about their customs and traditions, keep you informed about the rest of the world. A lot of programmes are educational and help with schoolwork.

We can’t imagine our life without the Internet. It is cheap, fast and easy to use. It is the perfect way of communication.  It brings new opportunities to many people.
