Introduction

Object of research work:

The world of board games

Subject of research work:

The rules of board games

 Relevance:

This project is very important for the students, because nowadays children, teenagers and even adults are increasingly going into the world of computers, tablets, telephones, forgetting or not even knowing the existence of other types of interesting and useful entertainment. Board games are one of the best entertainment for children. Besides, such games are not just entertainment; they train attention, patience and strength, and also can be useful in learning.

Goal:

Popularization of board games among the younger generation.

Objectives:

  • learn about board games and their origins
  • conduct a survey among classmates and acquaintances and to find out the most popular game nowadays
  • make up a new board game

Hypothesis:

Perhaps not everyone knows how interesting and useful board games are.

Problem:

Nowadays, children spend a lot of time at the computer not finding time to communicate with their relatives and friends. This can lead to dependence and health problems.

Today, when everyone has a computer, a tablet or a phone, a board game has gone to the backseat. In many families, parents don’t understand why they buy a variety of games if the Internet is full of accessible entertainment and educational games. Besides, the rhythm of modern life is so fast that sometimes adults don’t have any time to spend at least half an hour playing with children.  In the past, the children waited impatiently for the dad from work to play «Domino» or «Loto». They were delighted to roll the dice, traveling chips through a magical country. Today’s children, while living in different realities, also enjoy playing board games. Today I want to tell you how exciting and useful the board world is.

There are many interesting board games in the world, and to figure out the most popular game  I did a survey among the students of my class and my acquaintances. I found out that the most popular board game is chess. In second place there’s billiards, in the third place there’s dominoes and puzzles. And in fourth place there’s darts. There were 55 people interviewed. (Appendix №6)

To make up my own game I should learn about the history and the rules of board games. Today, everyone can diversify their leisure into various interesting activities to which could include board games. If you look back at history, it turns out in the old days that board games were played on the floor, on the ground and, of course, on the table. Originally board games arose as fun for the elite of the Roman Empire, and then spread throughout Europe thanks to the Roman legions. It is generally believed that board games originated in India and ancient Egypt. The earliest recorded board game was believed to be played as far as 3,500 BC in pre-dynastic Egypt. This game of  Senet was found in burials and was featured in many illustrations from ancient Egyptian tombs, usually of pharaohs. (Picture №1)

I’m going to tell you about some games in my survey.

Darts is an old board game. The game originated several centuries ago in the British Isles. To this day, darts is a traditional game played in pubs in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, the United States, and some other countries. The closer the dart is to the center of the target, the more points can earn. (Picture №3)

Billiards is an ancient board game. There are several versions about the origin. The birthplace of this game is China or India. This game develops coordination of movement, concentration of attention. In addition, it is very exciting and interesting. Usually, the set of the board game "Billiards" includes a game table, two cues, two triangles and 16 balls. (Picture №5)

The history of chess can be traced back nearly 1500 years, although the earliest origins are uncertain. The earliest predecessor of the game probably originated in India, by the 7th century AD. Chess is an ancient board game that develops tactics, strategy, combination vision, and visual memory. In each set of figures includes the king Queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights and eight pawns. (Picture №2)

Jigsaw Puzzles is an old board game. The origins of jigsaw puzzles go back to the 1760s when European mapmakers pasted maps onto wood and cut them into small pieces. John Spilsbury, an engraver and mapmaker, is credited with inventing the first jigsaw puzzle in 1767. The dissected map has been a successful educational toy ever since. (Picture №6)

Dominoes  is a family of tile-based games played with gaming pieces, commonly known as dominoes. Each domino is a rectangular tile with a line dividing its face into two square ends. Each end is marked with a number of spots (also called pips or dots) or is blank. The backs of the tiles in a set are indistinguishable, either blank or having some common design. The gaming pieces make up a domino set, sometimes called a deck or pack. The traditional European domino set consists of 28 tiles, also known as pieces, bones, rocks, stones, men, cards or just dominoes, featuring all combinations of spot counts between zero and six. (Picture №4)

Board games are one of the best entertainment for children. There’s a lot of board games in the stores, but it seems to me that the most interesting game is the game that is conceived and made by its own. So I decided to come up with my own board game. And when I started thinking about the purpose, I realized that this game would involve learning new English words.

My board game “Piece of cake”

(Picture №8)

The aim of this board game is to make the process of learning words easy and more productive.

Everyone needs to learn words of foreign language and often people do it in a traditional way-memorizing. It’s boring and it takes too much time. I can offer an alternative way.

This game is created for people of different ages and different levels of education.

The rules of the game:

You need 4 – 12 players (2players in each team)

 1) Playing field

 2) Chips

3) Word-cards

4) Timer

Instruction

  • put the chips on the start
  • choose the team to start the game
  • choose a person to start the game first
  • pull a card from the first level ( one star – the 1st level, two stars – the 2nd, three stars – the 3d level)
  • act, draw or explain the words on a card for 2minutes.
  • 1-3 guessed words - one step forward
  • 4-5 words – two steps further
  • no answer – go one step back or miss a turn (if you’re staying on a start).
  • The playing field consists of pieces of cake and glasses of juice . If you are staying on a piece of cake or on a start, take a noun card. If you are on a glass of juice, take a verb card and show the action. (assessment criteria are the same as with nouns)

Conclusion

During my research work, I became acquainted with the history of board games and the their rules. I did a research, interviewing my friends and family. And I also learned how to make the rules of the game.

My game “Piece of cake” develops language skills, improve vocabulary, and with the help of it you can revise words in a pleasant and entertaining way. It increases motivation to learning language by social comparison because of split levels of word-cards, developing communicative skills. This game is created for people of different ages and different levels of education.

In this project, I tried to open the curtain of the immense world of board games  - a world of all sorts of adventures in pleasant company.
