Palmyra, Syria What is remarkable: the ancient city, which gave the poetic name to St. Petersburg, is the most grandiose monument of ancient Roman architecture. Why in danger: The ongoing civil war in Syria threatens the safety of many UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Damascus, Aleppo and Palmyra. The latter can be completely destroyed.

Слайд 3

Potosi, Bolivia What is remarkable: the largest silver mine in the world is located in Potosi. Its history is Spanish colonial grandeur, mixed with rich Indian culture. Why in danger: silver mining, which has elevated Potosi, threatens to lead to its demise: too rapid growth in production and the use of new technologies threaten to worsen the condition of the soil and destroy part of the historical development.

Liverpool, United Kingdom What is remarkable: Liverpool is not only the birthplace of the Beatles, but also a trading city that played an important role in the formation of Great Britain as an empire in the XVIII and XIX centuries. Why in danger: the city is growing and developing, and the need for housing is growing accordingly. There are more and more new high—rise buildings in the development plans, which is prohibited by UNESCO rules.

Orthodox monasteries in Kosovo What is remarkable: Byzantine and Romanesque churches and monasteries are stunning examples of Balkan art of the XIII—XVII centuries. Why in danger: during the military conflict, many buildings in Kosovo were damaged. Now the region is calm, but fragile architectural monuments still need restoration.

Everglades, USA What is remarkable: a natural tropical park, on the territory of which there are many rare and endangered species of birds. Why in danger: due to natural disasters and human economic activity, the Everglades supplies Miami with water, and the areas bordering the park are actively being built up, which harms the local fauna.

Monuments in the Bamyan Valley, Afghanistan What is remarkable: ancient Buddha statues and Buddhist temples - before the spread of Islam, this region was the center of Buddhism. Why in danger: because of the armed conflict in the region. In 2001, two grandiose Buddha statues were already destroyed by the Taliban; UNESCO experts fear that history may repeat itself. In the valley there are several ancient Buddhist monasteries and a half-excavated statue of the reclining Buddha.
