Тема: “Great Britain”

Цели:

Образовательные:

- закрепление лексических единиц и речевых образцов по теме;

- отработка навыка аудирования;

- закрепление знаний о стране изучаемого языка, её обычаях и традициях.

Развивающие:

- развитие навыка монологической и диалогической речи;

- развитие умения воспринимать устную английскую речь;

- развитие познавательных интересов и творческих способностей.

- развитие коммуникативных навыков.

Воспитательные:

- воспитание интереса к стране изучаемого языка, её культуре и обычаям;

- воспитание культуры общения.

Оборудование и наглядные пособия:

Видеофильм  (видео курс «Everyday Conversations in English»  издательство «Титул»), телевизор, видеомагнитофон, раздаточный материал, демонстрационный материал.

Ход урока:

1. Организационный момент

- Good morning

- Sit down, please and let us start our lesson

2. Актуализация знаний

- Today we shall summarize our knowledge about Great Britain.

- You have already known a lot about this country and its people but some things are easily forgotten.

That is why let us brush up our knowledge of this country and my first question is

• What associations have you got when you hear the word «Britain»?
• And now who wants to be a geography teacher and show what countries is the UK made of and what are their capitals and symbols?

3. Отработка навыка аудирования (работа с видеоматериалом)

• The lesson of geography is over. Now imagine that you are in Britain for the first time.

Let us move to this country and may be we shall know some new information about it.

•  We remembered some information about Britain. Now let us speak about the capital of this country. Let us speak about London.
• The previous lesson we had an excursion around London and we have known a lot about its history and we have seen a lot of sights, we have spoken about different periods in the history of London. Let us recall some of them.

These are the periods of history. Please, describe them to us:

43AD - Under the Romans “Londinium” became the capital of the Roman province of Britannia.

886 – King Alfred the Great united England.

1666 – The Fire of London destroyed much of the city.

1850 – London was the largest city in the world and the most important port.

1939-45 – London was seriously damaged by German bombing.

1980 – The old port was rebuilt. There are new skyscrapers and the Millennium Dome.

- “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”.

Over two hundred years later Dr. Johnson is still right!

London is the place to be with so many different things to do and so many places to visit.

- We spoke about Britain. We spoke about London. But we cannot understand the country without its customs and traditions. At home you had to prepare some tasks for you classmates and your theme was: “British Festivals and Traditions”

- Well done pupils. You have worked hard today. But our lesson is coming to the end.  But I hope that it will make you find some more interesting information about the UK and may be some of you will find the opportunity to visit this country.

-At home I’d like you to imagine that you are going to meet Prince William, Queen Elizabeth’s grandson.  Prepare 8-10 questions that you would like to ask him.

Introducing Britain

Documentary 5’00

Part 1

You arrive at an airport in Britain.

The first thing you see are the similarities. A lot of things look the same here as at home. You could be anywhere in Europe.

Part 2

The shops are an international mixture. The people don’t look any different. The clothes are the same. The hair is the same. People do the same things. The British can be polite and friendly…but not always.

Part 3

When you leave the airport, you will see that everyone drives on the left. Be careful when you cross the road!

Part 4

One of the differences you’ll see is the style of the houses. Each house generally has just a ground floor and a first floor and is surrounded by a small garden. Looking after the garden is one of the main British pastimes. In suburbs like this, there are not many blocks of flats.

Everything looks neat and tidy.

Part 5

The big city center are different, things are not always very pretty.

Life is faster, harder, noisier. Cars, lorries, busses and taxis dominate city life.

Many British cities have changed to make things better for the car, but to make things worse of the people.

Part 6

British food can be different too. You will enjoy some of the food, it’s quite delicious. Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. But other kinds of British food are not quit as delicious. Chips, sausage and beans.

Perhaps not for the visitors.

And there’s tea and coffee! Tea and coffee with everything!

Part 7

It’s your first evening in Britain. You can go out to a pub, if you want. There are many different kinds of pub. Some nice, some not so nice.

Choose a nice one. But don’t stay too late. You must be tired.

It’s the end of your first day in Britain.

Robert Burns is Scotland’s national poet and Scottish people have a big dinner every year to celebrate his birthday (25 January). The main part of the meal is “haggis”, Scotland’s national dish made from liver, cereals and fat served in a sheep’s stomach. Then everyone reads poems and sing songs written by the great “Rabbie” Burns himself.
