Christmas
T: Good afternoon. I am very glad to see you. Today we have gathered in this room to have a TV-bridge "Moscow - London". Look out of the window. What is the season now?
P: It is winter now.
T:That's right. And what kind of weather do we usually have in winter?
P1: In winter the sun shines rarely, its rays are pale , it sets early and rises late.
P2: Sometimes the air is frosty. The frost locks rivers and lakes with ice. And when the frost breakes snowflakes begin to fall. They cover the ground with a wite sheet.
P3: On the early morning there is hoarfrost on the trees and icicles hang from the roofs of the houses.
P4: If the snow doesn't last long and a thow sets in, the roads becomes slushy.
P5: Sometimes it is slippery and sometimes there is a violent North wind that turns the snow into a snowstorm.
P6: In Russia winter is known as the "tider". It tidies and cleans the earth by covering it with clean snow. Earth sparkles with cleanliness like a tidy sitting-room.
P7: Winter puts everything in order and preserves the fields under the snow, helping them to gather strength for the future harvest.
T: That's right. But winter is popular and known not only with its snowfalls and frost.
It is also a season of beautiful holidays.
What winter holidays do you know?
P-s: New Year, Christmas, Boxing Day, St. Valentine's Day.
T: Right you are. And of course the most popular winter holidays are The New Year and Christmas. And today we are going to compare celebrating Christmas in Russia and Great Britain, find out what traditions this holiday has in these countries, learn if it has special symballs and customs, what people usually present to each other for Christmas, if there is any special presents, dishes and congratulations
But first let's find out when Christmas is celebrated?
M.P.: In Russia we celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January.
L.P.: In Britain Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December.
T: And who can explain the difference?
It happens because Russia and Britain belong to different churches. The Roman Chorch set this holiday on Desember 25th. And according to the Julian Calender used by the eastern Orthodox Church the Eve of the Nativity of Christ is on the 6th of January.
T: Thank you. And do you know where the word "Christmas" comes from?
The word "Christmas" comes from the term "Christes masse", meaning Christ's Mass.
T: Thank you. And is there any legend concerning the birth of Jesus Christ?
Yes, there are two. One of them is based on the Biblical event described by Luke. He tells the story of how an angel appeared to sheepherds and told them that a Savior had been born to Marry and Joseph in a stable in Bethlehem.
And the other is based on the story of Matthew, who tells of the Three Wise Men of the East who followed a wondrous star which led them to the new-born child, whom they presented with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
T: Thank you very much. So since the history of the holiday is based on the Bible, can we say that Christmas is a deeply religious holiday?
P11: Well, for many people Christmas is a deeply religious occasion, celebrating the birth of Christ. For others it is simply time to be with family, to feast and to be merry.
T: Yes. But however Christmas is observed the holiday is rich with customs and symbols from many lands. Let's speak about them.
For example in many countries there is the tradition to decorate houses on Christmas. Do you know where this tradition comes from and what people decorate their houses with?
The tradition to decorate the house comes from England. We decorate our houses with "boughs of holly." Holly is a bush with shiny red berries and glossy leaves. Because it remains green throughout the year it was believed to hold a promise that the sun would return. And according to Saint Matthew Jesus wore scarlet when dressed as the King of the Jews, that's why we use scarlet colour decorating our "boughs of holly." And do you decorate the house for Christmas?
Yes, we also decorated the house with toys and aluminations and candles. "Candles in the Window" is one of the symbols of Christmas.
The Bible saysthat Marry had trouble finding shelter on the night Jesus was born. So on Christmas Eve some people light candles in the window. The candles symbolize a welcome to cold and weary travelers.
T: It's very interesting. And of course, speaking about Christmas decorations we can't help mentioning the focal point of decorations in most homes and almost in all countries: Christmas tree. Can anyone explain where this custom comes from?
The Scandinavians worshiped trees and when they became Christians, they made the fir tree and other evergreens an integral part of the Christmas festival. And the Germans are credited with being the first to use the Christmas tree in their celebrations. And Martin Luther was the first who placed a star on the top of the tree. This was to represent the star that came to rest over the stable in which Christ was born which guided the shepherds to the birthplace.
T: Oh, and how is Santa Clous connected with the birth of Christ and Christmas?
This jolly fellow gets his name from a man known as St. Nicholas. He lived in western Asia during the fourth century. He gave his wealth to the poor - often children. After his died , his feast day was celebrated with gifts giving.
In Russia we also have such a fellow. But we name him Father Frost and he is a symbol of Winter and New Year more then of Christmas.
T: And we can see a Mistletoe on your table. Can you tell us about it?
This is another Christmas symbol. It is an interesting green parasitic plant which grows in globe-like formations high up in the branches of oak trees. Springs of it are tied together with ribbons and hung up in door ways. By custom anyone standing under the mistletoe gets to be kissed.
T.: A very beautiful custom. And is there anything connected with kisses and love in Russian traditions of celebrating Christmas?
Yes, there is. On Christmas day the sun was expected to appear. In the morning on January the 7th you could ask the person you cared for "Do you love me?" and answer had to be honest. It was forbidden to tell a lie on such a day.
Besides in Russia Christmas Eve was the begining of a time for fortunetelling. Girls would find out which side the dogs started barking from. It was believed that from that side you could expect the matchmakers to come.
(There are a lot of other fortunetellings. And we would like to show you some of them. Are there any valentiers, who want to try fortunetelling?
T: Thank you. There are really a lot of differnt kinds of fortunetelling on Christmas in Russia. And are there any more symbols of Christmas in England?
Of course there are some more Christmas symbols. For example a stocking.
Christmas day is probably the most exciting day of the year for most English children. They know that they will get presents. Traditionally English children hang stockings at the end of the bed on Christmas Eve. In the morning they check up whether the stocking has been filled with small toys, fruit and sweets. And there is always a piece of coal, which reminds noughty children that if their behaviour isn't good next year they will get nothing but a piece of coal. And do you give Christmas presents to your children?
Of course. Usually they find their presents not in the stockings but under the New Year Tree. On Christmas they get small presents, usually sweets and fruits for carol singing which is called "kolyadky" in Russia. Children get dressed in different costumes, go from house to house and sing songs. And the master or the mistress of the house should give them something.
And now we'd like to sing one of such songs for you.
Thank you very much. We also have a tradition to sing carols. No church or school is without carol service.
And now we want to sing for you.
CAROLS
T.: Thank you very much. Very beautiful cards. And I see a log on your table. What is it for?
To Scandinavians of long ago, the Yole log meant light and warmth during winter. A family member brought the log home on Christmas Eve. It was always lit with a piece of the last year's log.
T.: Oh, how interesting. And is there anything symbolizing the same in Russia?
Yes, there is. It is not a thing but a dish. It is kutya. The kutya was respected as keeper of good health.
On the evening of January 6 the mistress of the house would put grains of rice into a mortar and and mentally wish her kith and kin good helth. In the meantime, the master would go to fetch water. The rice was then boiled and honey and butter were added to it. The kutya was kept in a hot oven for some time. If the kutya was good it was believed that the comming year would be a happy one.
On the 7th of January it was improper for either the mistress or the master to leave home. They had to warm themselves at their own hearts, to bake their own bread and to eat the Christmas kutya in a homely manner.
T.: Thank you for your story and for your receipt of course. And is there any traditional Christmas dish in England?
Of course. On the 25th of December we have a Christmas lunch with the turkey or goose as the main dish. Afterwards there is Christmas pudding to be eaten. And what do you eat on Christmas in Russia?
In old Russia supper on Christmas Eve was a solemn occasion. The table was covered with a clean cloth. The whole family would gather at the table and everyone would eat in solemn silence. The master would go out and shout to the frost "Hey, frost, come and eat kutya with us! Walk about in winter and lie under a log in summer!" The purpose was to propitiate the frost so that it would not freeze the sprouts in the fields and the garden in spring time.
An oatmeal jelly was made and pancakes baked in the same evening. The first pancake was taken to the sheep, and the housewife would break it on a sickle so that the evel spirits did not take the sheep's wool away.
T.: Thank you very much for your interesting stories. We've learnt a lot of new and interesting things about symbols and traditions of celebrating Christmas in our countries. You sang so beautifully. and now I think it is time to congratulate each other with this beautiful holiday and say "thank you" to each other and to our guests.
