At 16 James started to work.In 1941 she married a medical student. They had two daughters, Jane and Claire. But James’s husband became an invalid during the 2 nd World War and was in and out of hospital for the rest of his life. In 1950 Phyllis had to find a job. She also went to evening classes at the City of London College.After that she took a diploma at the Institute at Hospital Administration.

At the same time she began to work on her first novel, which was published in 1962.She wrote about the real world ,and many of her characters were not rich, but brave and honest.

The best thing about being a pop is being able to travel and to work with some of the most famous people in show-business like Madonna.
I think Puerto Pico is the most beautiful place in the world; it has the best beaches you’ve ever seen. I love Puerto Rican food- the fruit and vegetabkes are much fresher than in other countries. At school one of my favourite lessons was drama, but the singing lessons have been the most useful in my career.
For me, the worst place in the world is the dentist’ chair. The song I hate most is the Birdie Song- it is the most irritating song ever made.It really gets on my nerves! I also dislike train food: once I had the most disgusting lasagne ever. I think it was lasagne- it was hard to tell. Yuk! There isn’t a sport I really hate but I suppose cricket is the most boring. I think watching it would send anyone to sleep! At school, I couldn’t stand maths although I know it is one of the most useful subjects for getting a job.
