Fred:        Afternoon!

Roy:        Hi! Congratulations.

Tanya:     Thanks. Glad to see you.

Fred:       Glad to see you too. How’s life?

Tanya:    No complaints. Thank you.

Roy:        I’m so glad, your flat-hunting is over. Are you pleased with your flat?

Tanya:     Yes, we are. There are all modern conveniences in the flat: gas, central heating, electricity, running water, telephone and two balconies.

Sasha:      Besides it has two rooms: a living-room and a bedroom. There is a kitchen, a bathroom, a lavatory and quite a big hall in it too.

Tanya:      Now we are going to furnish our flat well.

Sasha:       I am sure Tanya will arrange everything very nicely.

Fred:         Do you want any help really.

Roy:          Have you bought new furniture?

Sasha:       We’ve bought a sideboard, a sofa, two armchairs, a folding table, a wardrobe, two carpets, seven chairs and a new icebox (fridge).

Fred:         Let’s have a look at the living-room. Oh, it’s quite nice size and the wallpaper is so pleasant.

Sasha:       First of all we must decide where the sofa is going.

Tanya:       Let’s put the sofa right here next to the door.

Sasha:       And what about the sideboard?

Tanya:       It has to go to the right wall I think.

Roy:          And where are you going to put the folding table?

Tanya:       I think at the left wall opposite the sideboard.

Fred:         And there is a coffee-table.

Sasha:       Oh, it`d  be nice next to the sofa. Look, over there. Well , wait a minute               Let me stand and have a look. Yes, it`s  not bad.

Roy:          It fine, What  about the TV-set?

Sasha:        It`s got to go into the right-hand-corner.  Next to the sideboard.  And the  stereo and two speakers on either side of it.

Fred:          There is a carpet, isn’t  it ?

Sasha:        Of course, there is. We put it on the floor into the middle of the room.

Roy:           Oh, it`s going to be lovely. Frankly speaking I prefer a semidetached house in the city suburbs. They generally have more rooms and besides there is always a background near the house.

Fred:           Nonsense, flats often have balconies and there are generally lawns and park not far from them.

              Text «Priestley`s house»

Mr. Priestley lives in a very nice house. He is my friend and I went to visit him a week ago.

There is a big garden round the house and I went in at the garden gate and walked along the path to the front door. There is a smooth lawn in front of the house with beds of roses in it. I knocked at the front door.

Mr. Priestly opened it, greeted me, and we went into the hall. Then Mrs. Priestley came to greet me.

We went into the sitting-room and sat down in armchairs before the fire, for it was rather cold day.

Their sitting-room is quite a big room, about 25 feet long by 15 feet wide. There was a thing carpet on the floor. One or two good watercolours hung on the walls.  There was a piano on one side of the room. There were three or four comfortable armchairs, a radio, and three or four bookcases filled with books. On a small table near the window there were some foreign newspapers and magazines.

After we had chatted for a little time, Mrs.Priestley joined us and said: “Dinner is ready”, so we went to the dining-room, a pleasant-looking room with with a Persian carpet on the floor, a dark oak dining table, six chairs and a side-board. We sat down to dinner, a very English one – roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, and cabbage grown in their own garden.

When we had finished dinner, Mr.Priestley took me to his study to show me some of his books.

It was eleven o’clock and I was feeling rather tired. Mr.Priestley  saw this and said: “You look  sleepy, come along upstairs to  your  bedroom”. Upstairs there are five bedrooms, a bathroom and a lavatory.

We went to my room and he said: “Here you are. There is running water in your room and you can wash there. There are sheets and three blankets on your bed. If you are not warm enough, there is an eiderdown here.”

“Splendid”, I said: “thank you very much. Good night.”
