THE FOR-TO-INFINITIVE-CONSTRUCTION

S1. Подчеркните слова в предложении, которые относятся к описанной ниже конструкции.

Don’t wait for your ship to come in. Row out and you meet it.

The for-to-infinitive construction consists of:

  1. a noun in the common case or pronoun in the nominative case and
  2. an infinitive which is in predicate relation to the noun or the pronoun.

The construction is preceded by the preposition for.

S2. Translate the sentence, basing on the rule below.

It is useless for me to go there.

RULE:

The for-to-infinitive construction may be used in different syntactical functions.

The for-to-infinitive construction:

  1. as a subject;
  2. as a predicative;
  3. as a Complex Object;
  4. as an attribute;
  5. as an adverbial modifier of purpose;
  6. as an adverbial modifier of result.

So we can use this construction as the subject.

Examples:

  • For mother to ask him for help meant that she was upset. – То, что мать просила его помощи, означало, что она расстроена.

We can find the for-to-infinitive construction in this function in the sentences with the introductory subject it.

Examples:

  • It is safer for you to use the ladder. - Для тебя безопаснее воспользоваться стремянкой.
  • It was easy for you to answer this question. –  Тебе было легко ответить на этот вопрос.
  • It will be easier for him to go out and buy a new pair of gloves.

S3. Replace the following groups of sentences by the sentences with the for-to-infinitive used as the subject, basing on the rule in Step 2.

Model: He won’t catch the six fifteen (train). It’s impossible …→ It’s impossible for him to catch the six fifteen (train).

  1. She explained everything. It wasn’t difficult … .
  2. She managed to do it in time. It was quite an effort … .
  3. Don’t make mistakes. It’s important … .
  4. We are going to take a vacation. It won’t be difficult … .
  5. You’ll speak English to her. It’ll do for you good … .
  6. She is very late. It’s rather unusal … .
  7. You really ought to see a doctor. It will be better … .
  8. We shall spend a pair of weeks in St. Petersburg next May. It will be pleasant … .

S4. Complete the sentences by adding the for-to-infinitive to them.

Model: It would be better (you, to stay in bed). → It would be better for you to stay in bed.

  1. It’s very important (children, to play outdoors).
  2. It’ll be best (she, to talk to the manager).
  3. It might be just possible (you, to make him see the doctor).
  4. It would be easy (I, to pretend).
  5. It’s very bad (the boys, to smoke).
  6. It’s not easy (you, to carry that heavy bags).

S5. Translate the sentence and  underline the for-to-infinitive constructions.

  1. This is for you to do.
  2. This House was easy for us to find.

RULE:

The for-to-infinitive construction can be used as a predicative.

Examples:

  • This was for her to read. Это она должна была читать.
  • This article was difficult for him to translate. Ему было трудно перевести эту статью.

S6. Translate the sentences into Russian.

  1. This house just for you to see.
  2. The book is for Henry to give back to Mike.
  3. The video is for you to watch if you like.
  4. This paper is for you to type.
  5. The easiest way out is for him to stay at a hotel.

S7. Translate the sentences into Russian, basing on the rule below.

RULE:

The for-to-infinitive construction can be used as a complex object.

Examples:

  • She didn’t care for this to happen. Она не хотела, чтобы это случилось.
  • They are anxious for their son to enter the University. Они очень хотят, чтобы их сын поступил в университет.
  • I’m waiting for you to come. Я жду, чтобы вы пришли. или Я жду вашего прихода.
  • He asked for the papers to be brought. Он попросил, чтобы принесли бумаги. или Он попросил принести бумаги.
  • I have arranged for you to have a private room.  Я договорился, что у тебя будет отдельная комната.
  • He thinks it best for you to stay here. По его мнению, тебе лучше оставаться здесь. Он думает, что тебе лучше оставаться здесь.
  • Your attitude made it difficult for him to tell you the truth. Ему было трудно сказать тебе правду из-за твоего отношения.

  1. She doesn’t care for them to come.
  2. She was anxious for him to marry John’s daughter.
  3. They waited for the teacher to come and start the exam.
  4. She was impatient for him to be gone.
  5. I don’t care for her to speak.

S8. Translate the sentences into English, using the for-to-infinitive construction as a complex object.

  1. Он очень хочет, чтобы сын прочитал эту книгу.
  2. Ей все равно, одобряете вы ее поведение или нет.
  3. Мы ждали, что они купят новый телевизор.
  4. Меня не волнует, что они уезжают.
  5. Мы ждали, что он позвонит утром.

S9. Underline the for-to-infinitive construction as an attribute and the noun which it modifies, basing on the examples below.

That’s a chance for Pete to change the flat.

Examples:

  • There is no chance for her to find a good job. У нее не было шанса найти хорошую работу.
  • There is no one for children to play with. Детям не с кем играть.
  • It’s not the right time for us to speak about it. Сейчас не время нам об этом говорить.

S10. Paraphrase the sentences, using the for-to-infinitive construction as an attribute.

Model: Here is the book which you can read. Here is the book for you to read.

  1. That’s the room where we can spend our holiday.
  2. Tommy is the child you have to look after.
  3. We need a place where we can spend our holiday.
  4. Here are the articles which you should translate.
  5. Here are the instructions you have to follow.

S11. Underline the for-to-infinitive construction and translate the sentences, basing on the rule below.

She didn’t say a word for them to understand that she agreed.

RULE:

The for-to-infinitive construction can be used as an adverbial modifier of purpose.

Examples:

  • He stopped for her to catch up with him. Он остановился, чтобы она могла догнать его.
  • Mike stepped aside for the girl to pass. Майк отошел, чтобы дать девушке пройти.

S12. Paraphrase the sentences, using the for-to-infinitive construction as an adverbial modifier of purpose.

Model: He bought her a soft armchair so that she could relax.  He bought a soft armchair for her to relax.

  1. Mike was sincere and revealed all his secrets so that we could understand that he didn’t want to conceal anything.
  2. The girl bought some apples, flour, sugar that her mother could make an apple pie.
  3. Let’s buy a small  telly so that the children could watch it when they are alone.
  4. Open the window so that he could get a breath of fresh air.
  5.  Do it so that they could calm down.
  6. Don’t cry so that they shouldn’t feel that you are upset.
  7. Shut the door so that nobody could hear us.

S13. Translate the sentences into English, basing on the example below.

  1. День был слишком холодный, чтобы кто-нибудь мог провести хорошо время.
  2. Он достаточно умен, чтобы понять это.

RULE:

The for-to-infinitive construction can be used as an adverbial modifier of result. In this function the construction is chiefly preceded by the adverbs enough or too.

Examples:

  • He has done enough for me to hate him. Он сделал достаточно, чтобы я его возненавидел.
  • The fog is too thick for us to go on. Туман был слишком (такой) густой, чтобы мы могли идти дальше.
  • The car is big enough for six people to ride in. Машина достаточно большая, чтобы в ней могло ехать шесть человек.

S14. Use the for-to-infinitive construction after enough or too.

Model: We couldn’t find the pin in the hay-stack. (small) The pin was too small for us to find in the hay-stack.

The place is quiet. We can have a rest here. →The place is quiet enough for us to have a rest.

  1. Irma couldn’t reach the top shelf. (high)
  2. We can’t understand the text. (difficult)
  3. The boys couldn’t lift the piano. (heavy)
  4. Everyone could hear the music. (loud enough)
  5. The sea was cold. They couldn’t swim.
  6. The table is big. All of us can sit around it.
  7. The street is very narrow. He won’t be able to turn the car.
  8. The problem was comparatively easy. I solved it in half an hour.
  9. The light was good. She could read the inscription.
  10. The conversation was interesting. The children didn’t want to go to bed.

S15. Paraphrase the sentences, using the for-to-infinitive construction as an adverbial modifier of result.

Model: She is faithful enough and we can rely upon you. She is faithful enough for us to rely upon her.

  1. His father is rather rich and Dick can buy a car.
  2. My friend is too light-minded and you’d better not ask her for help.
  3. Freddie can run so fast that you shouldn’t compete with him.
  4. Lucy was quite clever and they could trust her.
  5. Simon is very old and his children can’t let him go abroad alone.
  6. Ann can swim rather well and you can invite her to take part in the local sports competitions.
  7. Martha’s house is pretty large and they can stay with her.
  8. The garden is very small and your father can’t plant all these trees there.
  9. The poem is too long and Mike can’t learn it by heart.
  10. This paper is rather dull and I never subscribe it.

S16. Read the text and make up the last sentence with the for-to-infinitive construction.

A Bit Of Backbiting*

Dr. White was invited to a party in a local castle. The dinner being late and the company not to his taste, the doctor stepped out into the garden and then to the near-by churchyard. When the dinner was served at last and the doctor had not yet returned, one of the guests wondered where he could have gone. The master of the house, annoyed by Dr. White’s absence, explained that as the churchyard was not far from there. The doctor, to visit, it, natural, was, for, his former patients, to have gone.
