Russia (the official name – the Russian Federation) is the largest country in the world. The country is situated in Eastern Europe, Northern and Central Asia. It occupies about 1/6 of the Earth surface. Its total area is over 17 million square kilometers. Our land is washed by 12 seas, most of which are the seas of three oceans: the Arctic, the Atlantic and the Pacific. In the south and in the west the country borders on fourteen countries. It also has a sea-border with the USA.

The country has a great variety of flora and fauna. There are numerous forests, plains and steppes, taiga and tundra, highlands and deserts in our land. The highest mountains are the Altai, the Urals, and the Caucasus. There are over 2 million rivers in the Russian Federation. The longest of them are the Volga, the Ob, the Yenisei and the Lena. Our land is also rich in various lakes. Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world.

On the Russian territory there are 11 time zones. The climate conditions are rather different: from arctic and mild (moderate) – to continental and subtropical. Our country is one of the richest in natural resources countries in the world: oil, natural gas, coal, different ores, ferrous and non-ferrous metals and other minerals. It is one of the highly developed industrial powers in the world. The main industrial branches are machine-building, aircraft, aerospace, automobile, textile, chemical and others.

The Russian Federation is a multinational state. It comprises many national districts, several autonomous republics and regions. The population of the country is over 140 million people. More than 100 different nations and nationalities live in the Russian Federation. Russian is the official language of the state. Вот что представители разных стран рассказывают об экологической ситуации в их регионах. Ознакомьтесь и ответьте на вопросы письменно после текстов.

Great Britain: Hello, dear friends! I’m Kate Smith, “London Wildlife Fund”. I greet you at our Forum which purpose is to becoming a friend of Nature. Mankind long believed that, whatever we did, the Earth would remain much the same. We know now that is untrue. Nature is under threat. One country’s pollution can be every country’s problem. So we all need to work together to safeguard our environment.

Question: I heard that many people in your country get to work by public transport.

Answer:  Yes, it’s so. A lot of people use public transport. They don’t go by car, because firstly, cars pollute the atmosphere and secondly, because it’s very difficult and expensive to park a car in a big city.

Question:  And people in England never drop litter in the street, do they?

Answer:  Yes, if nobody sees you dropping litter, you have to pay a fine. They sort their rubbish: there are special containers for paper, tins, food, white glass, brown

glass and green glass. After that special factories recycle these materials and people reuse them.

The USA: My name is Jane Morgan. I’ m a member of “Greenpeace”.   In our country a lot of forests disappeared. It is necessary to plant new forests. It is necessary to keep balance all over the world. Our towns become bigger and at the same time our nature goes to ruin.

Question: Why are the rainforests important?

Answer: Franklin Roosevelt, our American president, said “A nation that destroys its soil destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people”.

Forests are important for various reasons. Firstly, they renew the Earth’s air supply by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. Secondly, they provide a home to thousands of animals and plant species.

Question: What do teenagers do to save tropical rainforests?

Answer:   There are lots of things that we can do to help to protect the rainforests. Join an organization which tries to save the rainforests, like Greenpeace. Their programme is a programme of defending the trees.

Write letters to politicians in countries where there are rainforests, asking them to stop allowing companies to cut down the trees. Don’t buy furniture which is produced from rainforest wood.

Russia: Glad to meet you. I’m Svetlana Ivanova. I’m from “Russian Ecology Group”. Many people say that the climate nowadays is going “crazy”. The huge forests, including rainforests, help control the world’s weather, and produce much of the oxygen in the air. Man can influence the climate. The famous scientist W.S. Gilbert said “Man is Nature’s sole mistake!” The ecological situation in our country is different and dangerous. The Baikal, the Black Sea and many other parts of our country are in ecological danger.

Question: Why is Russia cooperating on the field of environmental protection with other countries?

Answer: Environmental protection is a universal concern of all people and countries. That is why Russia is cooperating in the field of environmental protection with the United States, Canada, Norway, Finland and other countries. People must discuss different ecological problems and make correct conclusions. Only common efforts of all people of the world will help to stop further pollution of the Earth.

Question: How do you think, why environmental problems became exceptionally acute in Russia?

Answer: As you know unusually hot weather caused forest fires in the Moscow area, Vladimir region, Volga Federal District, Altai Territory, Ryazan region, Voronezh region, and Nizhny Novgorod region. Wildfires destroyed thousands homes, swept through several villages. There were 554 fires burning in an area of more than 200,000 hectares.  As ecologists said, high carbon dioxide emissions from forest fires could speed up the global warming process. World Wildlife Fund (WWF) ecologists said the forest fires and the carbon monoxide emissions are part of the vicious circle of global warming.

India: Good afternoon! I’m a member of the group “Friends of the Earth.”  I’d like to add something. Many animal and plant species are endangered because Man kills animals and destroys their habitat. People hunt animals for meat and fur; they cut down trees for different needs such as: furniture, paper and cardboard, which are made of from wood. Cutting trees means that less oxygen will be produced in the air and it may also influence the weather and life of people, plants and animals and may lead to global warming.

Nicaragua: Dear friends, I greet you too. I want to say that we have missed one of the main problems- noise pollution.  You know, noise pollution negatively affects our health and wellbeing. The problems related to noise include: hearing loss, stress, high blood pressure, sleep loss, and a general lowering of the quality of life.

China:   I raise my voice against the powerful monopolies, against their destructive force. Look at these pictures, please. What have they done to the earth? They have turned our land into a desert of concrete and stone. Rivers that used to be so beautiful and full of fish are poisoned! Air that used to be so clean and fresh is polluted. And I want to recite the poem connected with our theme.

What have they done to the World?

What have they done to the seas, my friend?

What have they done to the seas?

What have they done to the rivers, my friend?

What have they done to the trees?

What have they done to our land, my friends?

The land which is ours from our birth.

What have they done to our forests, my friends?

What have they done to the Earth?

What have they done to the skies, my friends?

Skies that so blue and so clear.

What have they done to the skies, my friends?

What have they done to the air?

    “Modern technologies in our life”.

Today we will talk about modern technologies which have spread (простираться) all over the world and have become really indispensable (необходимый) in our busy activity.

How do you think, what the tasks of the lesson are. So, the tasks of the lesson are the following:

    1. developing speaking skills;
    2. revising lexical material on the topic “Modern technologies in our life”;
    3. developing reading skills.

We’ll be able to travel in the world of different new technologies and you’ll find out which of them will be the most necessary and useful for you and which make your life easier and more comfortable. Besides, we’ll try to guess which technologies can be popular in the nearest future.I advise you to listen and work at the lesson very attentively, because you will have a rather difficult homework – to write an essay on the topic of our lesson – “Modern technologies in our life”.

    Mobile Phones

The technical progress goes straight in huge steps. We live in the 21st century, full of different means of communication. Today almost everyone has a mobile phone. We cannot imagine our life without it because it is very important to communicate with your family and friends. At the same time, we can find the opinion that the usage of mobile phones can be harmful and dangerous.

I think that mobile phones are very useful in our everyday life. Firstly, it is very convenient, as people can call each other anywhere. Secondly, each telephone has such devices as a calendar, a camera, the Internet, an alarm clock and others. No matter where we are, there is an opportunity to get connected to the Internet, check our e-mails and find any necessary information. In addition mobile phones can help fill in our free time. For example, we may play games on it. Moreover, you are always available to delay meetings or let somebody know if you are late. Thirdly, many parents buy cell phones for their children just for safety. If a child gets into some trouble, he can call emergency services or his parents. If you need, you can call the police or an ambulance.

At the same time, some people believe that mobile phones are dangerous. Their microwaves can be very harmful and they affect our health greatly. In addition, there is such a phenomenon as a mobile phone addiction, and it’s a real problem in our society. Besides, when a person speaks on the phone in public places, we can listen to other people’s conversations or sometimes phones ring a lot of times. It is so disturbing.

In conclusion, I’d like to say that mobile phones make our life easier but nevertheless, there is a negative effect on our health. That is why people shouldn’t overuse them.

Lately computers have filled our life. We do not imagine our leisure without this miracle-machine.

They have much better memories and they can store much information. No man alive can do 500,000 sums in one second, but a computer can. In fact, computers can do many of the things we do, but faster and better. They can predict weather, and even play chess, write poetry or compose music. With the help of computers the Internet has entered into our life. It’s a brilliant source of information because the internet is a big encyclopedia. Now people cannot live a day without checking of mail and visiting their favourite sites. The Internet is not only the assistant in daily work, it is also the other world in which there are mail boxes, libraries, photo galleries, games, shops. The internet gives us a chance to communicate with people all over the world. It is interesting to learn about a life in different countries and you can practice English talking to native speakers. Also you can use the internet if you are looking for a job or to find people who share your interests. By means of the Internet people can travel to different cities, visit tourist places.

Certainly, the Internet can be the excellent assistant in information search. But we can’t rely on all the information. Moreover, some sites are unsuitable for children and should be controlled by parents. Besides, the internet can cause addiction. We lose a touch with the real world getting in a full dependence on a computer. But computers shouldn’t replace seeing your friends. And finally, users of the internet get a lot of spam every day which is very annoying.

I think that it is necessary to understand, what is really important on the Internet and what is not. And then the Internet will be not the terrible enemy, but the indispensable assistant.

It is common knowledge that television now plays an important role in our life. It is difficult to say if it is good or bad for us.

On the one hand, we can say that TV is our eyes because TV helps us to know more about the world, about the other counties, about the events that happened in the world.  It's the main source of information and a cheap form of entertainment for millions of people. It gives us an opportunity to "travel" all over the world, to "meet" different people and learn about their customs and traditions. It has the power to educate and broaden our minds. It helps us to relax after a hard day's work and escape from reality. There's always a great variety of programs on TV: news and sports programs, talk shows, games, concerts and theatre performances...

On the other hand, television is a terrible waste of time. It makes us lazier. We stay at home instead of going out. We read less. We think less. We even talk less. Before we admitted the one-eyed monster into our homes, we never found it difficult to occupy our spare time. For instance, we used to have hobbies, we used to go outside for our amusements to theatres, cinemas, restaurants and sporting events. We read books and listened to music. All that belongs to the past. Television encourages passive enjoyment. Little by little, it cuts us off from the real world.  Besides, very often the programmes are bad. There is also too much ads. Violence on TV is another problem that worries people. As George Mikes once said, TV teaches us "how to kill, to rob, to shoot and to poison." But the same can be said about computer games and many films and books.

    Scientific and technical progress

The basis of scientific and technical progress of today is new informational technology which is very different from all the previous technologies. Thanks to up-to-date software and robots new informational technologies can make many processes much faster and transmit information more quickly. It is important today because the quantity of information grows rapidly.
New informational society has its peculiarities. Firstly, more and more employees work in the sphere of service and information. Secondly, more and more huge databases appear to collect and store the information. And finally, information and IT become goods and start playing important part in the country's economy.
These processes affect social structures and values.
It becomes important to learn to get new knowledge quickly and sometimes to change your qualification. IT can first lead to unemployment, but later create even more workplaces especially for highly qualified professionals. While the hardest work can be performed by robots and routine calculations by computers, in the future people with the most creative mind and numerous fresh ideas will get better career chances.
On one hand technology development gives more access to professional and cultural information and leads to new forms of individual enterprises, but on the other hand there is a danger of total control of private life unless special laws are enforced by the government.
Another danger is «intellectual terrorism» when computer viruses block important programs.
There are other directions of technical and scientific progress of today.
One of them is the development of new ecologically clean sources of energy using sun, gravitation, winds or rain. New kind of transports and new agricultural methods that do not harm our nature are being developed today.
Breakthroughs in science have led to creation of artificial viruses for new medicines and products, body organs for transplantation and productive soils for growing vegetables and crops. Many new materials and technologies are being used in our everyday life.
All these innovations may have influence on our life, social relations and globally on our Earth.
The influence can be very different: from psychological and health problems of children who spend too much time online to an opportunity to prevent genetic diseases for future generations.
But the most difficult problems the humanity faces are global problems.
The first and foremost is ecological problem: pollution of air, water and soil, exhaustion of natural resources. Renewable natural resources such as oxygen, forests, flora and fauna do not have enough time to regenerate. This leads to different changes in climate and nature such as depletion of ozone layer and other things that has not been properly studied by scientists yet.
Other crucial problems include wars, epidemics, and demographic problems.
The only way to solve them is to work globally and in cooperation with other countries. And here the humanity should find a way to use new technologies for the common good. The solution of these problems cannot be postponed because otherwise people will have fewer chances to survive on this planet.
