He was saying to the other that he could teach an uneducated person to speak good English. The girl was very much interested in what they were talking about. She tried to hear every word.

  6. The team was certain that the treasure found in 1973 was from the Atocha.
  7. Fisher continued looking for the Atocha in the Quicksands area.
  8. Journalists wrote about the valuable objects found on the Margarita.
  9. Soon after he had sold objects from the Margarita, Fisher thought about stopping his search for the Atocha.
  10.  In July 1985, some valuable objects were discovered by Fisher near the Atocha.

Treasure at the bottom of the sea

In the 17th century, there were many Spanish sailing ships called galleons that carried gold and jewels from the Americas to Europe. On September 4 1622, two galleons called the Nuestra Senora de Atocha and the Santa Margarita left Cuba for Spain. Just a day later, both ships sank during a terrible storm.

Although the lost ships were known to contain huge amounts of treasure, nobody disturbed them for the next 350 years. Despite numerous efforts, no one was able to find them and they became known as the ‘Ghost Galleons’.

In 1969, a treasure hunter named Mel Fisher set up a company, ‘Treasure Salvors’, to search for the ‘Ghost Galleons’. Fisher used to be a farmer, but since 1962 he has worked at sea searching for lost ships. He was so successful at this that he could afford to set up his own company. His boat, Holly’s Folly, began the search in 1969 in an area called the Middle Keys, near Florida. Fisher had studied diaries and reports from the 17th century and according to them the Atocha had sunk here.

But Fisher found nothing and he decided to get the help of Eugene Lyon, an expert in 17th century Spanish history. Lyon soon realized what had gone wrong. Some of the islands in the area had been renamed and Holly’s Folly was looking in the wrong place. Lyon redirected the search to the tiny Marquesas Keys.

It was two more years, however, before the team found a few silver coins and gold bars from the Atocha. Then, in 1973, they found 4,000 silver coins and three silver bars stamped with numbers that proved they came from the Atocha. The treasure was extremely valuable but the ship itself was nowhere to be found.

It was expensive to continue the search but Fisher didn’t want to give up. He concentrated instead on finding the Margarita and started looking in an area called the Quicksands. To start with, just a few pieces of treasure were discovered by the team and then, at last, they found some half-buried pieces of wood. It was the Margarita. The divers continued taking objects from the Margarita for another two years. Stories about the find appeared in newspapers around the world and the treasure was eventually sold for £25 million. Fisher was rich and famous but he was still determined to find the Atocha and in 1985 he continued his search.

This time he concentrated on an area called the Hawk Channel. Finally on July 20, Fisher found hundreds of silver bars and chests of silver coins lying on the seabed close to the Atocha. It had taken 16 years, but at last he had found both ships.

We’ve all experienced annoying tricks when we were young – the brother who stole your toys and then got you into trouble by telling your parents you had hit him. But Anna and Paul are not humans. They’re African baboons, and playing tricks is as much part of monkey behaviour as it is of human behaviour.

12

Throughout nature, tricks like this are common – they are part of daily survival. There are insects that hide from their enemies by looking like leaves or twigs, and harmless snakes that imitate poisonous ones. Such behaviour, developed over hundreds of thousand of years, is instinctive and completely natural. Some animals, however, go further and use a more deliberate kind of deception – they use normal behaviour to trick other animals. In most cases the animal probably doesn’t know it is deceiving, only that certain actions give it an advantage. But in apes and some monkeys the behaviour seems much more like that of humans.

13

What about Paul the baboon? His scream and his mother’s attack on Anna could have been a matter of chance, but Paul was later seen playing the same trick on others. This use of a third individual to achieve a goal is only one of the many tricks commonly used by apes. Another tactic is the ‘Look behind you!’ trick. When one young male baboon was attacked by several others, he stood on his back legs and looked into the distance, as if there was an enemy there. The attackers turned to look behind them and lost interest in their victim. In fact, there was no enemy.

14

Studying behaviour like this is complicated because it’s difficult to do laboratory experiments to test whether behaviour is intentional. It would be easy to suggest that these cases mean the baboons were deliberately tricking other animals, but they might have learnt the behaviour without understanding how it worked. So the psychologists talked to colleagues who studied apes and asked them if they had noticed this kind of deception. They discovered many liars and cheats, but the cleverest were apes who clearly showed that they intended to deceive and knew when they themselves had been deceived.

15

An amusing example of this comes from a psychologist working in Tanzania. A young chimp was annoying him, so he tricked her into going away by pretending he had seen something interesting in the distance. When the chimp looked and found nothing, she ‘walked back, hit me over the head with her hand and ignored me for the rest of the day’.

16

Another way to decide whether an animal’s behaviour is deliberate is to look for actions that are not normal for that animal. A zoo worker describes how a gorilla dealt with an enemy. ‘He slowly crept up behind the other gorilla, walking on tiptoe. When he got close to his enemy he pushed him violently in the back, then ran indoors.’ Wild gorillas do not normally walk on tiptoe. Of course it’s possible that the gorilla could have learnt from humans that such behaviour works, without understanding why. But looking at the many cases of deliberate deception in apes, it is impossible to explain them all as simple imitation.

17

Taking all the evidence into account, it seems that deception does play an important part in ape societies where there are complex social rules and relationships and where problems are better solved by social pressure than by physical conflict. The ability of animals to deceive and cheat may be a better measure of their intelligence than their use of tools. Studying the intelligence of our closest relatives could be the way to understand the development of human intelligence.

Task III.

Read the text. Then for questions 18-22 match the heading (A-G) with the paragraphs(1-5). Two headings are not needed.

A Facilities                        _________

B Reservations                _________

C Location                        _________

D Lapland                        _________

E History                         _________

F The Ice Hotel                 _________

G Construction                _________

UNUSUAL DESTINATION

18 People often choose to have holidays in strange and unusual places. But there can be few places stranger than the Ice Hotel in Sweden, which is visited by over 37000 people each winter. Built of snow and ice, the hotel is very different from so-called normal buildings. The cold subzero environment and the wintry surroundings are part of attraction of this hotel.

19   The Ice Hotel is situated in the small village of Jukkasjärvi, next to the river Tornealven. It is 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in Lapland, the most northerly part of Sweden. Before the Ice Hotel appeared, there were almost no tourists in this region, where the local people speak Saami, not Swedish, and there is no industry or pollution.

20 The Ice Hotel is rebuilt each winter. Construction starts in late October when special snow cannons shoot tons of snow onto metal sections. After two days the metal sections are removed, and the snow now looks hard. It is then cut into solid arches. Huge ice blocks are cut from the frozen river to makes walls, ceilings, floors. About 30000 tons of snow and 40000 tons of ice are used to build the hotel.

21 The story of the Ice Hotel began in 1989-90 when there was an exhibition of ice art in the local village and an ice igloo was built there by French artist Jannot Derib. Some of the visitors wanted to sleep on reindeer skins in the igloo and found it amazing.  Yngve Bergqvist, the owner the village inn, thought it would be great to have an ice hotel. Thus, the concept of the Ice Hotel was born.

22 Visitors to the Ice Hotel are sometimes nervous about staying in a place where the outside temperature is often minus forty degrees Centigrade. But the conditions inside the Ice Hotel itself are reasonably comfortable. The temperature in the rooms is around minus four degrees, and the guests are provided with specially made sleeping bags and there beds are covered with reindeer skins. To entertain the visitors in the evenings the hotel includes an ‘ice cinema’ and ‘ice bar.  During the day the hotel company organizes sports activities such as white water rafting, dog sledding, and even fishing, and there are tours to local villages and ‘safaris’ to observe reindeer in their natural habitat.

Task IV (Based on the same text) Now, for questions 23-30 decide if the statements are true (T) or false (F).

23 The Ice Hotel isn’t the sort of building people expect to find in a northern country.

24 People in Jukkasjärvi don’t speak Swedish.

25 It takes two days to build a hotel.

26 The hotel is mainly built of ice.

27 A French artist built the first Ice Hotel.

28 Guests sometimes worry about the cold temperature.

29 Guests can watch films.

30 Visitors can hunt reindeer in the daytime.

There is something about the English Channel that has always fascinated the human race and it has always played a special role in British history. The sea itself has always been important to mankind but the Channel often created a barrier between Great Britain and the Continent. This barrier has existed for more than 12,000 years and the desire to break it has occupied the minds of many people for almost two hundred years.
The construction of the tunnel is perhaps the most incredible engineering project of the 20th century. In fact its completion was called a "technical triumph”.
However, the first proposal to build a Channel Tunnel appeared in 1802, when a French engineer presented his project for two tunnels to cross it. Historians say Napoleon was interested in that plan. But Napoleon was more interested in fighting the British than in linking the two countries, and shortly afterwards a new war between England and France began. There were many other plans to build a tunnel but unfortunately all of them failed. It was not until after the last war that Britain and France began seriously considering the project. On the 12th February, 1986, Mrs. Thatcher and President Mitterrand signed the Franco-British Treaty which allowed the construction and the operation of the Channel Tunnel. The tunnel was completed eight years later.
It is now very quick and easy to cross the Channel. You don’t have to book a ticket. The Channel Tunnel trains operate twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. You can now cross the Channel in thirty-five minutes. At last the great barrier has been broken.
In 1996, the American Society of Civil Engineers, with Popular Mechanics, selected the tunnel as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Once upon a time there was an old man who dearly loved his only son. His son enjoyed riding horses and swimming in the swift waters of mountain rivers, but most of all he liked hunting. The old man was proud that his son was full of courage but he was afraid of his passion for hunting. Once in a dream he saw that his son would be killed by a huge lion. The poor father was afraid that this dream would come true and decided to save his only son. The man built a nice big house for his son and set in a high place where he could keep his eye on him.

The father didn't allow the young man to leave the house. In order to please and entertain his son, the old man put paintings of every kind of animal in one of the rooms. There was a buffalo, a wolf, an elephant, a rhino and deer in the pictures. Among them there was a lion. But looking at all the animals did not distract the young man from his boredom.

One day, he approached the painting and spoke angrily to the lion in it: "You damned beast, it's because of you and my father's lying dream that I am kept here in this prison. I can't do what I want. I can neither climb the mountains nor hunt in the forest. It's your fault. What can I do to you?" And as he said this, he struck his fist against the wall to blind the lion. But a small sharp piece of wood got under his fingernail and the young man could not get it put. The old man called for a doctor but the doctor wasn't able to help his son. The finger became red and hurt unbearably, it increased to an enormous size. Soon the young man died of the fierce fever.

The lion, even though it was only a painted one, had indeed killed the young man, just as his father had foreseen.

READING

Read the following passage. For Questions 1-7, choose the answer (A, B, C or D )which  you think fits best according to the text. Write the appropriate letters A-D in boxes 1—7 on your answer sheet.

Napoleon Bonaparte’s ambition to control all the area around the Mediterranean Sea led him and his French soldiers to Egypt. After losing a naval battle, they were forced to remain there for three years. In 1799, while constructing a fort, a soldier discovered a piece of stele (stone pillar bearing an inscription) known as the Rosetta stone. This famous stone, which would eventually lead to the deciphering of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics dating to 3100 B.C., was written in three languages: hieroglyphics (picture writing), demotic (a shorthand version of hieroglyphics), and Greek. Scientists discovered that the characters, unlike those in English, could be written from right to left and in other directions as well.

Twenty-three years after discovery of the Rosetta stone, Jean Francois Champollion, a French philologist, fluent in several  languages, was able to decipher the first word – Ptolemy – name of an Egyptian ruler. This name was written inside an oval called a “cartouche”. Further investigation revealed that cartouches contained names of important people of that period. Champollion painstakingly continued his search and was able to increase his growing list of known phonetic signs. He and an Englishman, Thomas Young, worked independently of each other to unravel the deeply hidden mysteries of this strange language. Young believed that sound values could be assigned to the symbols, while Champollion insisted that the pictures represented words.

Task 1

Read the following magazine article about mobile phones and answer        questions 1-5. Indicate the letter A, B, C or D against the number of each question in the table given below. Give only one answer to each question.

Menace or Convenience:

The lure of the mobile phone

A friend of mine was a penniless student at university in 1985 when she started to go out with a man who lived in an oil-rich eastern state. To all her friends he seemed like the possessor of boundless riches, not least because he gave her a mobile phone so that he could contact her at any point of her day directly from his home country. Although virtually none of us had ever seen a mobile phone, the overriding reaction was, ‘What a waste of money ringing all that way’ as opposed to, ‘Wow, that’s brilliant.’ From their earliest incarnations,                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               these telephones have never had the capacity to thrill us in the way that other new bits of technology can. Sighs of contempt, rather than envy, would be breathed in all the first-class train carriages where mobiles started ringing in the late 1980s.

By the mid 1990s, the mobile was no longer the preserve of image-conscious businessmen. Suddenly, it seemed, every petty criminal could be seen organising their dodgy deals as they shouted into stolen ones in the street. It was at this point that I bought a mobile. I had been sneering for years , but I reasoned that as everyone now had one, surely no-one would be offended or irritated by mine, as long as I used it exclusively in the back of taxis or other places where I could avoid intruding on people’s mental privacy.

But I immediately grew to depend on it and constantly checked that I had it, in the way that habitual smokers are said to keep checking for their cigarettes. And it affected my behavior. Without the means of ringing ahead to say I was going to be late, for example, would I have set off for my business appointment with so little time to spare? I began to understand how those inexperienced walkers come to call out the Mountain Rescue Team from the top of some perilous peak. Without the false sense of security the phone in their pocket provided, they wouldn’t have gone up there in the first place.

What’s more, after a while, I realised that once it has got a hold on you, all telephone calls are urgent in exact proportion to the availability of a mobile to announce them. Because our modern lives have so much capacity for urgency, the mobile is turning into an enemy rather than a helpmate. It is enabling us to dash from one activity to another in the mistaken belief that we can still be in touch – with work, with other family members. Yet, although we are constantly on standby, we are not in a position to be fully engaged with anything else. No mental commitment to the task in hand is possible when the mobile can ring at any moment with another demand for our attention, no matter how legitimate. In this way, I began to feel persecuted rather than liberated.

And mobiles may be even more sinister than any of us could have dreamt. When activated, it seems, they serve as miniature tracking devices which, unknown to their owners, reveal their whereabouts at any given time, even if no calls are made or received. In a recent murder trial, the police showed that the suspect travelled to and from the murder scene, despite his having denied this, through using the computer records of his mobile’s whereabouts.

But what has really put me off my phone is a conversation I had with a terrifyingly important man – one of the most conspicuously successful in Britain. He had been to dinner the night before with two other such figures. ‘Do you know,’ he said, ‘they sat there taking calls all through dinner.’ What a let down. In my book, importance is denoted not by a ringing mobile, but rather by the ability to build up the kind of efficient and trustworthy support team that ensures you never to need to take an urgent call in public. One suspects moreover, that it is the very existence of the mobile phone that prevents effective delegation in such situations, that it represents a menace rather than a convenience.

  1. According to the writer, how did people react when the first mobile phones were introduced in the 1980s?

  1. They were rather suspicious of them.
  2. They saw how useful they might be.
  3. They realised how popular they would be.
  4. They were generally unimpressed by them.

  1. Why did the writer eventually decide to buy a mobile phone?

  1. She accepted that one was needed for her work.
  2. She realised they had become widely accepted.
  3. She had seen how to use one effectively.
  4. She had got used to the idea of them.

  1. What immediate change did the mobile phone make to her life?

  1. It tended to make her less reliable.
  2. It caused her to do irrational things.
  3. It led her into dangerous situations.
  4. It forced her to make better use of her time.

  1. Why did she eventually come to resent her mobile phone?

  1. It allowed her employers to monitor her movements.
  2. It prevented her from concentrating on what she was doing.
  3. It allowed people to make unreasonable demands on her.
  4. It meant that her work was invading her free time.

  1. The writer tells us the anecdote about the important man to show that mobile phones

  1. are essential in modern business.
  2. are a nuisance in social situations.
  3. may lead to less efficient management.
  4.  may lead to a loss of business confidentiality.

Task 2

You are going to read a newspaper article. Seven paragraphs have been removed from the article. Choose from the paragraphs A-H the one which fits each gap and indicate it in the table given below. There is one extra paragraph which you do not need to use.

The Perils of Pizza Making

It looks easy but it really isn’t, says Chandos Elletson, whose efforts turned out far from perfect.

My first pizza was cremated. I hadn’t even got to the toppings, let alone the tossing stage. I was stuck on the rolling-out bit.  I fast discovered that specialist pizza chefs – pizzaioli- don’t use rolling pins, they use their hands to shape the dough into perfect circles. Francesco Sariitzu, the pizzaiolo at The Park restaurant in Queen’s Park, London, where I went to be trainee for the evening, took one look at my sorry effort and signed.

1.

Real, or original, pizza is an art: the pizzaiolo is baker, fire stoker and cook. A wood-burning oven is an essential part of the proceedings. However, before the pizzas get to the fire, they have to be properly shaped and it was this procedure that was causing me all the grief.

2.

From here it was all hands. He pressed out the dough with his fingers, all the time working in flour and pressing the edges out until a small round circle had emerged. He then threw it into his hands, twirling it to shake off the excess flour. He did not toss it in the air. “Tossing is for show”, he said disdainfully. “It is not necessary.” Once the flour was shaken off, put the dough onto the steel work surface with one half of it hanging over the edge. One hand pressed and stretched and the other pulled in the opposite direction. Before you could say “pizza Margherita” there was a perfect circle ready to be topped.

3.

The object is to press out the edges, not the centre, using the flour to dry out the stickiness. However, the temptation to press everything in sight to make it stretch into a circular shape is too strong; before I knew it, I had thick edges and a thin centre.

4.

Then I noticed, to my horror, that some customers were watching me. “Shall we watch the man make the pizza” a man asked his young daughter, who he was holding in his arms.

5.

A hole appeared in the centre. “Look, Daddy. There’s a hole,” the little girl said. I looked up from my work, crestfallen. I was defeated. “it’s my first evening,” I admitted. Francesco stepped in with the paddle and my second pizza went where the first one had gone: on the fire. We all watched it go up in flames.

6.

Francesco noticed and applauded. I wanted to call back the little girl and tell her: “I can do it! It’s just like swimming!” My base was not perfectly round but it was not bad. It wasn’t perfectly even but it was certainly an improvement. We decided to top it. We put on a thin smear of tomato sauce and some mozzarella.

7.

When I got there, Francesco showed me where to put it. There was a point in the deep oven away from the fire, where the pizzas go when they are first put into the oven. I put the long handle deep into the oven and, feeling the heat on my arms, brought it back sharply. The pizza slid onto the floor of the oven. My first pizza was in the oven and not being burnt alive.

  1. To put those things right, I did as Francesco had done and slapped it with the palm of my hand. This made me feel better and I slapped it again. Next, I did some twirling and the flour showered everywhere.
  2. Instead, Francesco quickly made one of his own to act as a comparison. When they were done and brought from the oven, we had a tasting. The result was astonishing. Mine was tough and crunchy in places, not bad in others. His was perfectly crispy and soft everywhere.
  3. Having done that, it was time to get it on to the paddle, which felt like a pole vault. With one determined shove, the pizza went on halfway. Another shove forward got it on completely but put an ugly buckle in it. I turned and headed for the oven.
  4. Francesco made it look easy. He showed me what to do again and I tried to take it in. The chilled dough balls, pre-weighed at 170 g, were all ready in a special fridge below the work counter. The dough was sticky and Francesco worked fast. First it was dropped into a large pile of flour and then it was mixed with a small handful of polenta.
  5. Clearly, the stage was all mine. I had been told to concentrate on the edges using the flat edge of my hand under my little finger. I started to work the dough and tried to stretch it. It did begin to take shape, but as soon as I let it go it just went back again and didn’t get any bigger. I felt more and more eyes on me. Then the worst thing happened.
  6. That was because it wasn’t so much a circle as an early map of the world. Silently, Francesco reached for his pizza paddle, scooped it up and threw it disdainfully into the red-hot stone oven, where it burnt rapidly on top of a funeral pyre of burning wood. I made up my mind that my future efforts would be good enough to be spared the death sentence.
  7. I was baffled and embarrassed as it did so, but I thought I was onto something. On my next attempt, I quickly got to the shaping stage with half the pizza hanging over the edge. This was where I had gone wrong. Using only the bottom edge of my hands with my fingers working the edges, I started to do the breast stroke: fingers together, fingers apart, working and  stretching. It began to work.
  8. I moved nervously into position to have a go at achieving the same result myself. I scooped up a piece of dough from its snug tray. It immediately stuck to my fingers and when I threw it at the flour, it just remained stuck. I had to pull it off. The first bit is easy, or so it seems, but unless you follow the right procedure you sow the seeds of later failure.

Task 3. Questions 11-20 relate to the following passage. Read it and choose the alternative to answer each question in the best way.

It is indisputable that in order to fulfill its many functions, water should be clean and biologically valuable. The costs connected with the provision of biologically valuable water for food production with the maintenance of sufficiently clean water, therefore, are primarily production costs. Purely “environmental” costs seem to be in this respect only costs connected with the safeguarding of cultural, recreational and sports functions which water courses and reservoirs fulfill both in nature and in human settlements.

The pollution problems of the atmosphere resemble those of the water only partly. So far, the supply of air has not been deficient as was the case with water, and the dimensions of the air-shed are so vast that a number of people still hold the opinion that air need not be economized. However, scientific forecasts have shown that the time may be already approaching when clear and biologically valuable air will become problem number one.

Air being ubiquitous, people are particularly sensitive about any reduction in the quality of the atmosphere, the increased contents of dust and gaseous exhalations, and about the presence of odors. The demand for purity of atmosphere, therefore, comes much more from the population itself than from the specific sectors of the national economy affected by a polluted or even biologically aggressive atmosphere.

The households’ share in atmospheric pollution is far bigger than that of industry which complicates the economic problems of atmospheric purity. Some countries have already collected positive experience with the reconstruction of whole urban sectors on the basis of new heating appliances based on solid fuels; estimates of the economic consequences of such measures have also been put forward.

In contrast to water, where the maintenance of purity would seem primarily to be related to the costs of production and transport, a far higher proportion of the costs of maintaining the purity of the atmosphere derives from environmental considerations. Industrial sources of gaseous and dust emissions are well known and classified: their location can be accurately indentified, which makes them controllable. With the exception, perhaps, of the elimination of sulphur dioxide, technical means and technological processes exist which can be used for the elimination of all excessive impurities of the air from the various emissions.

Atmospheric pollution caused by the private property of individuals (their dwellings, automobiles, etc.) is difficult to control. Some sources such as motor vehicles are very mobile, the cost of anti-pollution measures will have to be borne, to a considerable extent, by individuals; whether in the form of direct costs or indirectly in the form of taxes, dues, surcharges, etc.

The problem of noise is a typical example of an environmental problem which cannot be solves only passively, i.e. merely by protective measures, but will require the adoption of active measures, i.e. direct interventions at the source. The costs of a complete protection against noise are so prohibitive as to make it unthinkable even in the economically most developed countries. At the same time it would not seem feasible, either economically or politically, to force the population to carry the costs of individual protection against noise, for example, by reinforcing the sound insulation of their homes. A solution of this problem probably cannot be found in the near future.

11 According to the passage, the population at large ___________ .

a) is unconcerned about air pollution controls.

b) is especially aware of problems concerning air quality and purity.

c) regards water pollution as more serious than air pollution.

d) is unwilling to make the sacrifices needed to ensure clean air.

12 Scientific forecasts have shown that clear and biologically valuable air _________ .

a) is likely to remain abundant for some time.

d) mining

14 The costs involved in the maintenance of pure water are determined primarily by _________ .

c) production costs only

d) research costs only

15 According to the passage, atmospheric pollution caused by private property is __________ .

a) easy to control

b) impossible to control

c) decreasing

d) difficult to control

16 According to the passage, the problem of noise can be solved through ___________ .

a) active measures only

b) passive measures only

c) active and passive measures only

d) additional taxes only

17 According to the passage, the costs of some anti-pollution measures will have to be borne by individuals because _________ .

a) governments do not have adequate resources.

b) individuals contribute to the creation of pollution.

c) industry is not willing to bear its share.

d) individuals are more easily taxed than producers.

18 Complete protection against noise ___________ .

a) has been achieved in some countries.

b) is impossible to achieve.

c) is possible only in developed countries.

d) may gave prohibitive costs.

b) atmospheric pollution

c) the share

d) households

20 The word merely in the last paragraph can best be replaced by which of the following?

a) only

b) mostly

c) especially

d) probably

Task 4. You are going to read an extract from a book about changing conditions in Antarctica. Answer the questions 21-35 by choosing from the Sections A-G. The sections may be chosen more than once.

A The Antarctic is a landmass the size of Europe and the USA put together that surrounds the South Pole. Over 99 % of the Antarctic is covered in a thick ice cap, in some places as thick as 4,700 m. 40 % of the present ice cap covers water. In addition, the continent doubles in size each winter when the surrounding seawater freezes. If we took the ice cap away, the eastern side of Antarctica would form one solid mass of mountainous land, whilst the western side would be a group of islands.

B  The Antarctic has always been good for doing scientific experiments because it is one of the few places in the world which still has a relatively unpolluted environment. Scientists can study the history of the Earth, its seas and the atmosphere. By looking at layers of ice, it’s possible, through levels of lead pollution, the spread of the motor car. But recent changes in the Antarctic ice cap are of even greater interest to scientists.

C In February 1997, the ship Arctic Sunrise, which belongs to Greenpeace, became the first to sail around James Ross Island in the eastern Antarctic. For thousands of years, it’s been impossible to do this because the island was connected to the mainland by a 200-meter thick ice shelf. But in 1995 the ice shelf called Larsen A disintegrated and an iceberg measuring 78km by 37km broke away. Before Larsen A collapsed, it became criss-crossed with deep cracks. Greenpeace observers have noted similar cracking in other areas of ice in the same area, which would seem to indicate that the process is continuing.

D During the past 70 years of global warming, the Antarctic Peninsula has warmed by 2.5°C – faster than anywhere else in the world. Some scientists think this rise is due to the greenhouse effect. That is, too much carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere has the effect of making the whole world too hot.  Others say the warming may be localized, which means it is only happening in the Antarctic Peninsula.

E Few land species of wildlife live in Antarctica. Those which do survive there have adapted to very cold conditions. They are most at risk from the changes that is a warmer Antarctic is bringing.  The worry now is that the effects could be more widespread. They could cause a worldwide catastrophe. If the Antarctic ice cap melted completely, it would raise the sea level by more than 70 meters. Many areas of land would be flooded, including southern Britain.

F But the news is not all bad. Rising temperatures are beneficial to plants because as ice melts it exposes soil where they can live. Some plant species are now on the increase – their numbers have grown by 25 % in some areas.

G However, warmer temperatures can be unwelcome for the penguins. The warmer weather has made it more difficult for them to bring up young as they nest in high rocks that do not trap snow or water during the yearly ice meltdown. Because of higher temperatures there is heavier snowfall which covers nesting sites longer in the breeding period. Also, as the ice melts, there is less food for the penguins, and this has resulted in a 40 % decline in their number.

George Orwell was born in India in 1903. When he was four years old, his mother took him and his sister back to England but his father stayed in India.

In England, the young boy had a private teacher but it was difficult for his parents to find the money to pay for it. He was lucky later -when he was thirteen he won a scholarship to Eton College but he was not a very good student.

He always thought of becoming a writer. When he was eleven, he wrote a poem about World War I. This poem was very good and it appeared in the local newspaper.

George had a difficult but interesting life. For a long time he couldn't find a well-paid job. He lived in Paris and London but he didn't have much money and he had to stay in poor parts of these cities. In London he even lived in the street for some time. These years helped him to write his first book called Down and Out in Paris and London, published in 1933. In 1936 George went to Spain to write for newspapers about the Civil War. Three years later he wanted to join the army to fight in World War II but he was very ill and couldn't become a soldier. He decided to work for the BBC and in 1945 he published Animal Farm. After the war he moved to Scotland where he wrote his final book, Nineteen Eighty-Four.

He died in London in 1950. He was only forty-seven.

Dear Andy,

It’s great there. The weather is brilliant and there are things to do every day. The hotel is fantastic. It has got a swimming pool and four tennis courts. It’s got a great beach – I’m sitting there now. My dad and I go divining and windsurfing in the morning. Sometimes we go sailing, too. There are also a lot of fantastic plants and tropical birds there. Well, it’s getting very hot here – time for a swim! See you soon!

Chris

P.S. There’s music and dancing every night on the beach!
