Passive resistance. Gandhi had been living in South Africa for 20 years, being arrested many times. In 1896, after being attacked and beaten by white South Africans, Gandhi began to teach a policy of passive resistance to and noncooperation with the South African authorities.

Слайд 7

The idea for this policy came from the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy , who was an example for Gandhi.

Слайд 8

Compaign for home rule Gandhi became a leader in the Indian campaign for home rule. He played an active part in recruiting campaigners, he started the movement of passive resistance to Britain and organized the campaign of noncooperation.

Слайд 9

Gandhi became the international symbol of a free India.

Слайд 10

Mahatma He lived a spiritual and ascetic life of prayer. Indians believed him as a saint and called him Mahatma . Gandhi's advocacy of non-violence was a way of life in the Hindu religion. He did a lot to unite the Indian Hindus, Moslems and Christians.

Слайд 12

The Mahatma's political and spiritual role in India was so great that the British authorities did not interfere with him. In 1930 Mahatma began a new campaign, calling upon the Indian population to refuse to pay taxes, for example the tax on salt.

Слайд 13

Independence When World War II began, the Congress Party and Gandhi decided not to help Britain in the war unless the country was granted complete independence.

Слайд 14

Gandhi’s death on January 30, 1948, was an international catastrophe. His place in humanity was very important in history and the teachings of Gandhi inspired nonviolent movements in many countries.

Слайд 15
