The settlers who left Europe and came to the New World brought many European customs with them. Sometimes they even brought the names of their home towns or countries. As a result, there are many places in America which have the names of European towns. There are places called New London, New Orleans, New Paris, St. Petersburg and Moscow.

When Christopher Columbus visited the new World, he claimed the land for Spain. Soon Spanish soldiers and settlers came to the New World. The Spaniards called their colony New Spain. Mexico City was its centre. Florida. Ponce de Leon reached Florida in 1513. He explored this land in the hope of finding a “Fountain of Youth”. California . Father Junipero Serra (priest) mission the Indians learned about new ways to farm, bread cattle and build houses.

New France. 1608 Samuel de Champlain started the first French settlement in the New World. Champlain called this place Quebec. Fur ( мех) trade was the main business of New France. New Netherlands. Dutch were planning to make money buying furs from the Indians and selling them to Europe. At the mouth of the Hudson River, they built a settlement and called it New Amsterdam. After the war the Duke of York renamed the colony and the town New York.

English Settlements Virginia and Jamestown. In 1606 some merchants in London formed a private business called the Virginia company. The Company asked England’s King James I to give them some land in America to establish a colony. More than 120 people accepted the offer and set out for Virginia, as the colony was called. They arrived in the spring of 1607. They build a settlement and called it Jamestown, in honour of the King

The Pilgrims There were people in English who disagreed with the teachings of the church of England. In 1620 a large group of such people left England and sailed to north America on a ship called the Mayflower. Soon Samoset (an American Indian) greeted the Pilgrims. They returned with a friend, Squato. He tought them that they could make the soil rich by burying fish in the earth. To give thanks, they invited Squanto and other Indians to a great feast. (Thanksgiving)

The Puritains In English there was another group of people who disagreed with the teachings of the Church of England. They wanted to make the Church of England more modest, to “purify’’ ( очищать) it. The Puritans set sail in 1630. Many Puritains were richer than the Pilgrims. The Puritains also came to Massachusetts. They settled when the Charles River empties into the ocean. They settled there and called the place Boston. They established very strict rules.
