Every year British people celebrate their national, traditional and religious holidays. Many of them are quite old, important and well-known. Most of public holidays in the United Kingdom are known as Bank holidays because banks are closed on these days. They are: New Year’s day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Shrove Tuesday (or Pancake day), May Day, Spring Bank holiday (in May), Summer Bank holiday (in August), Christmas Day (December, the 25th) and Boxing Day (December, the 26th – the day of exchanging Christmas presents). In fact, in Scotland they don’t celebrate Easter Monday. On May Day people dance all day long waving their white handkerchiefs to ward off evil spirits. Spring and Summer Bank holidays are really popular in the UK. The British take short trips to the country or to the seashore and have much fun with their families and friends.

Besides, there are some national holidays which are celebrated locally, in separate places. For instance, Scottish people have Hogmanay (or New Year’s Eve - December, the 31st), Burns’ night (January, the 25th) and St. Andrew’s day (November, the 30th). Northern Irish people celebrate Orangemen’s Day (July, the 12th) and St. Patrick’s day (March, the 17th). The national holiday in England is St. George’s day (April, the 23rd) and in Wales - St. David’s day (March, the 1st). People of Northern Ireland celebrate Orangemen’s Day with parades and marches to commemorate the Battle of Boyne in 1690. Burns’ Night celebrates the life and work of a world-famous poet Robert Burns and his contribution to the Scottish culture.

The British also celebrate St. Valentine’s day, Halloween, Guy Fawkes’ night (or Bonfire night), Remembrance Sunday (in November), Mothering Sunday (in March), Father’s Sunday (in June) and April Fool’s day. In the evening of November, the 5th (Guy Fawkes’ Night) British people burn a dummy of Guy Fawkes who attempted to destroy the Houses of Parliament in 1605. The dummy is made of straw and old clothes and put on a bonfire. On Remembrance Day (or Armistice Day) people wear red poppies in their pockets to commemorate all British soldiers being killed in the two World wars.

Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25.People of different countries celebrate Christmas in various ways. Christmas is a time for eating. The traditional food is turkey, Christmas cake, Christmas pudding made of fruit. Candles at Christmas also go back to those times. People believed then that their light helped them to forget the darkness of winter. Now Christmas

I am from Russia. The fist holiday of the year is New Year’s Day. There are a lot of New Year traditions in Russia. In every home there is a New Year tree with lights and decorations. Children always wait for Father Frost to come and give them a present. Many people think New Year’s day to be a family holiday.

But in England not all English people celebrate New Year. A lot of people go to Trafalgar Square to see the Christmas tree. They have a New Year party at home. When Big Ben strikes 12 they drink a toast for the New Year.

People in Russia have many traditions. One of them is Maslenitsa. On this holiday people say good-bye to winter. People in both countries cook pancakes with honey or sour-cream, they sing songs and dance. In England this holiday is celebrated in a different way.

The 8th of March is a happy and nice holiday. Each family celebrates this spring holiday. In the morning, men go to the shops to buy some flowers. They try to clean flats and to cook a holiday dinner.

Sons help their fathers too: they make a cake, lay the table and wash dishes after holiday dinner.

There is almost the same holiday in England. It is called Mothers' Day and celebrated also in spring. Flowers and cakes are the traditional gifts for all women England.

All women try to be nice and happy on this day.

In Russia we celebrate Victory day on the 9th of May. On this day, the radio and television broadcast parade held in the Red square. High officials attend this parade. They place a wreath of flowers at the tomb of Unknown Soldier. All stand in silence for a few minutes. In Great Britain people celebrate Remembrance Day on the 11th of November. On this day, the Royal family and political leaders come to the Cenotaph to lay wreaths at its foot. War veterans march past the memorial. An endless line of people wishing to honour the veterans and those were killed in the war follows.

HOW IMPORTANT ARE DADS?

Research appears to confirm the adverse consequences boys face when they grow up in homes with absentee dads. A recent study of 6,000 males ages 14 to 22 found that boys whose fathers were absent from the household had double the odds of going to prison. That study, produced by Cynthia Harper of the University of Pennsylvania and Sara S. McLanahan of Princeton University, found that such factors as race, income, parents' education, and place of residence had little or no bearing. Other results of this study, according to a Reuters news report, "Boys With Absentee Dads Twice as Likely to be Jailed" (August, 21, 1998), included the following:

  • The risk of incarceration for boys who grow up with a stepfather in the home is about three times that of children who remain with both natural parents.
  • Remarriage of parents doesn't help. A stepparent in the household doesn't erase the absent father problem.
  • Young men whose parents separated during adolescence are roughly one and a half times as likely to end up in jail as are children from intact families.
  • Boys whose parents separate fare only slightly better than boys born to single mothers do.

Friendly Letter Format (приложение)

In the friendly letter format, your address, date, the closing, signature, and printed name are all indented to the right half of the page (how far you indent in is up to you as long as the heading and closing is lined up, use your own discretion and make sure it looks presentable). Also the first line of each paragraph is indented.

1 Your Address
All that is needed is your street address on the first line and the city, state and zip on the second line. (Not needed if the letter is printed on paper with a letterhead already on it.)

2 Date
Put the date on which the letter was written in the format Month Day Year e.g. August 30, 2003. Skip a line between the date and the salutation.

3 Salutation
Usually starts out with Dear so and so, or Hi so and so. Note: There is a comma after the end of the salutation (you can use an exclamation point also if there is a need for some emphasis).

4 Body
The body is where you write the content of the letter; the paragraphs should be single spaced with a skipped line between each paragraph. Skip 2 lines between the end of the body and the closing.

5 Closing
Let's the reader know that you are finished with your letter; usually ends with Sincerely, Sincerely yours, Thank you, and so on. Note that there is a comma after the end of the closing and only the first word in the closing is capitalized.

6 Signature
Your signature will go in this section, usually signed in black or blue ink with a pen. Skip a line after your signature and the P.S.

7 P.S.
If you want to add anything additional to the letter you write a P.S. (post script) and the message after that. You can also add a P.P.S after that and a P.P.P.S. after that and so on.
