The United States of America The United States of America is one of the largest countries in the world. It is the fourth largest country in the world after Russia, Canada and China. It occupies the North American continent. The total area of the country is 9 million sq km. It borders on Canada, Mexico and the Russian Federation. The Atlantic Ocean is to the east and the Pacific Ocean is to the west of the country.
The United States of America is made up of 50 states and the District of Columbia. The capital of the country is Washington.
The largest cities are New York, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, San Francisco.
The lowlands are in the central part of the country, the highlands are mainly in the west and some of them are in the east. The highest peak is Mount McKinley.
The longest river is the Mississippi. The largest lake is Lake Superior
The official name The official or political name of the country is the United States of America. The country is usually known by a shorter name or the abbreviation THE USA or THE US . The geographical name of the country is America.
Emblem of the United States of America Unofficial emblem of the United States consists of a bald eagle with 13 arrows in the left leg and an olive branch to the right – a symbol of war and peace. American flag has 13 horizontal stripes - 7 red and 6 white symbolizing the colonies forming an independent state and 50 white stars symbolizing 50 states.
The national anthem of the United States is «The Star Spangled Banner». The words were written during the Anglo - American war of 1812—1814 and set to the music of an old song.
Rose is the National Flower of the country. On November 20, 1986 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed Rose as National Floral Emblem of United States of America.
The Statue of Liberty is the symbol of American democracy. It stands on Liberty Island in New York. This National Monument was a present from France to the USA. France gave the statue to America in 1884 as a symbol of friendship. Liberty carries the torch of freedom — in her right hand. In her left hand she is holding a tablet with the inscription «July 4, 1776» — American Independence Day.
