Discussion.

The questions for the discussion are given in the coursebook. The alternative questions are as follows:

What is your favourite day? Why?

When is the best time of the day for your?

When do you feel most awake or tired?

What do you think should be changed in the school?

How do you think the school life can be improved?

Having discussed their own school life the students go on to read the text.

Reading /Class and individual/

-The students read the text and list the words /phrases they cannot understand.

Either the advanced students or the teacher explain the meaning of difficult words .The more efficient way is to give the students some prompts  rather than explanation and encourage them to elicit the meaning of the words from the context.

-Once the problem with the unknown words is solved, the students read the text again. When reading for the second time the students make a list of differences between the school from the text and their own.

-The students compare and discuss their ideas with the rest of the class.

Problem  solving  /Class/

-The students read the comments in the coursebook , study the timetable and work out which day is likely to be Lee’s favourite.

-The students play a game. They take turns to match the subjects in their timetable. the rest of the class guess their favourite day.

Speaking/Class/

-The students are asked if they remember /know the rules of their school and if they find them reasonable or too strict.

-The students read and listen through the rules of Lee’s school, discuss ‘good and bad sides’, discuss how they are similar to or different from those in Russian schools.

Role play

- Students take an American pupil on a guided tour of their school. The class is divided into pairs .Student A is an American pupil. Student B has been delegated

to show student A around. They go on an imaginary tour of the school, with the student B commenting on the places they visit and asking questions about student A’s school. After they have finished, the students exchange the roles.
