1. Read the text.

Is insurance necessary for  travellers?

1. Agencies provide you with different insurances: you can get a life insurance and accident insurance, car insurance and boat insurance, homeowners insurance and travel insurance, and lots of other kinds of insurance policies. Why do people buy insurance policies? For example, why do they buy travel insurance when they go abroad?

2. This is what Adam Brown, the owner of the insurance agency "Safe Travel" says: "When we travel, we can face some unexpected risks. First of all, we can get ill or can have an accident while travelling. The risk is rather high, especially in exotic countries. There are exotic diseases, and snakes and mosquitoes inhabit the most beautiful islands. So, if you become ill or injured, your travel insurance will provide financial support. That is, the agency will pay for your treatment.

3. Then your luggage can be lost while travelling, and, unfortunately, this happens a lot. Can you imagine your life in a foreign city without even the most essential clothes and personal things? If your luggage is lost or damaged, your travel insurance will financially cover at least some percentage of the property that has been lost. With that money you can buy everything necessary and your holiday won't be ruined.

                4. And last but not least, your luggage or money can be stolen. It's not a very good idea to wait till the police find it. It can take too much time. The agency will pay for the damage done and, then, let the police do their job while you are enjoying your holiday."

                5. Adam Brown has been in insurance business for more than fifteen years, and the number of his clients is growing. It's growing, he thinks, because when people are on holiday, they want rest and relaxation, and travel insurance helps them relax and enjoy their trip even if something goes wrong.

Find out which paragraph contains the following information. There is one extra letter which you don’t need.

a) the way insurance policy can help when luggage is lost

c) medical care provided by an insurance agency

d) insurance policy for the damage caused by fire and flood

Задание 2. Reading

Read the text and choose the correct answer (True, False, Not stated).

I’ve never been particularly keen on travelling. When I was a kid, I enjoyed reading stories about Robinson Crusoe and the Treasure Island, but I’ve never thought about round-the-earth voyages or discovering new lands on my own. The spirit of adventure runs in my father’s family. There are family legends about his ancestors taking part in some expeditions to Antarctica and Africa. There’s even some evidence that it may be true — it’s a photo in Grandpa’s drawer which he considers of great value. That black-and-white snap addresses my young Grandpa talking with Jacques-Yves Cousteau, a famous French underwater researcher and film-maker, on board of Calypso, Cousteau’s legendary laboratory ship.

Though it all looks very exciting and captivating at first sight, neither Mum nor me share Dad’s passion for adventures. We certainly try to conceal it and look as happy and enthusiastic as possible about all his fishing or diving or whatever ideas.

“I’m going to Black Lake tomorrow,” Dad said when we were having a quiet family Friday night dinner. “Anyone with me?”

We were supposed to feel very privileged being invited to that intensely Robinsons’ event, but we knew what it meant. Waking up at 3 am, driving along deserted country lanes, then cross country driving without any lanes at all, getting through the forest, mosquitoes, wet grass, leaves and thorns in the hair.

“I’d love to go there!” Mum has always been very swift in assessing the situation. “The view of the lake is just stunning at sunrise. If only I had known about it a bit earlier! I’ve already promised Mrs Jackson to drive her to the hospital tomorrow. Her backache literally drives her mad. Poor thing was so grateful when I offered to drive her to the doctor. But it’s OK, I’ll call her right now and say that I won’t be able to do it tomorrow. Some other day perhaps. She’ll understand, I hope. Family is the priority after all.”

Mum sounded natural and sincere and her reckoning was perfect. Dad considered her words for a while. “No, it won’t do,” he muttered at last. “It’ll be unfair to old Mrs Jackson. I’m afraid you may have to stay at home tomorrow, darling. I hate saying it, but a promise is a promise, and it would be very inconsiderate to take it back. Mrs Jackson has always been very nice to us, and very helpful with the garden...”

“If you feel so strong about it, then, yes, I’ll stay in for tomorrow. But next time you need to let me know about all your journeys in advance. And ... I love it that you are so sweet to our neighbours!” Mum was doing her best to suppress her triumph smile.

Dad’s eyes focused on me, and I realised that there were no excuses for me. “There’s no need to wake up Mum early tomorrow,” I said. “I’ll pack up everything right after dinner. It’ll enable us to set off very promptly in the morning.” Both of my parents were looking at me with admiration. Dad obviously admired me for taking up his spirit for adventure, and Mum — for the ability to sacrifice for other people’s sake. OK, I kicked off my newly bought high hilled shoes, which I’d planned to put on for Maggies Grand Saturday Dancing Party and slid into the Family Saviour shoes — worn out garden boots. “It’s not very dark in the garden yet — I’ll dig for some worms. Fish doesn’t bite at the artificial fishing fly very much. We need to prepare something nicer for it.” I slammed the front door shut, and stopped on the porch feeling reluctant to go further. The big garden looked deserted and unfriendly, the grass was already wet with the night dew. “Fancy that, Jill!” Dads voice sounded muffled from behind the window. “Some of my colleagues dare to sound sympathetic when they find out that I have a daughter, not a son. They think that a girl cannot make a good partner for an adventurer like me. Stupid! My daughter beats any of their sons!”

I sighed, picked up the spade and stepped down into the damp chilly twilight.

Reading

Read the text and fill in the gaps (1-6) with phrases A - G. There is one phrase you do not need.

The need for ever more qualified specialists is growing geometrically. The world is getting more and more complex and today’s graduates are expected to know a lot and to be able to work with loads of information. The information they get may be highly controversial and to assess it, young people need to understand the interconnections between politics, cultures,  economies and technologies around the world. Due to globalisation, education has practically ceased to function as a local system which trains workers for local industries. Today national education systems have to be changed (1).

Languages awareness is one of the essential requirements to a graduate today. Whatever field you are going to work in, you’ll have to communicate with colleagues, partners, providers or clients all over the world. To do it effectively you need sufficiently developed communication skills, (2). Lots of people understand the importance of foreign languages (3). If you have already left school, is it still possible to acquire necessary language skills and make up for opportunities missed in school years? Most teachers would say “yes”, you can learn languages in any age and get impressive results (4).

The innovations are particularly helpful to people who don’t have much time and cannot spend days in the language classroom. Over recent years computers have become increasingly important for learning languages. Computer technologies and the internet enable students to learn languages (5). IT technologies save time and it’s the main reason why e-learning and various online courses are getting more and more popular. From home, or while commuting they can practise vocabulary, grammar or write essays (6). There are special pieces of software that can record the students’ speech and programmes for work on pronunciation. Motivation for learning languages is increasing too. The internet, as the greatest technological advance, has brought the most essential thing into language learning — live communication across continents and cultures.

A   which can be instantly e-mailed to the tutor

B   due to new technologies and innovative approaches to language teaching

C   because the internet courses are becoming very popular

D   so that they could meet unified global standards

E   in other words you need to speak and write well enough to be understood

F   but unfortunately they don’t know how to improve their level

G   without too much effort

Use of English

Read the following opinions and use the words in the appropriate form.

I’m convinced that we shouldn’t ignore politics. If young people are___ (1. difference) to it, they can’t influence it. Someone else is shaping their future and they will have to accept the results, whatever they are.  I’m not saying that we should take part in all kinds of___ (2. move). Politics is a very___ (3. controversy) thing and it’s often very difficult to say who is right and who is wrong. I never support people who protest___(4. aggression), no matter how good their ___ (5. intend) are. I think we should analyse ___ (6. inform) and think for ourselves.
