Last year the teachers of Ecology, English, and Handicraft & IT of our school started the joint project named “Beauty That Kills”. The first part was devoted to healthy eating, and this year we have put an emphasis on the habit of smoking. The theme of the study we held was “I Choose Life” in the framework of the project. The purpose of the lesson was to make sure, that beauty, being the consequence of a healthy way of life, depends on our bad habits, and smoking in particular. Our students had shot a video on the issue of smoking and conducted a survey among our pupils. At the beginning of the session the students were asked the question: why people start smoking. Than they were presented the table with the so-called “advantages” of smoking, such as style, fashion, breaking the ice, losing weight, coping with stress and so on.

Then the following reports were presented: the impact of smoking of human health, intrauterine development of a child and so on. Then some historical moments connected with appearance of tobacco in Russia were covered. After that the students highlighted the question considering the laws to ban smoking, which exist in Russia nowadays.

Afterwards the students examined the influence of adverts and design of pack covers on the habit formation.

As far as you can see, all the previous reports were presented in Russian. In English the students delivered the reports connected with struggle with nicotine addiction in English-speaking countries, as there is a widespread belief that fashion on smoking came to Russia from the West. The myth was totally debanked, taking into consideration the present situation in the Western countries.

The next report in English was focused on an urgent problem of our city: the tobacco producing company, which is located in Saratov – BAT, and measures taken by the progressive public.

There came the output that there are immeasurably more advantages in now-smoking. The students came to conclusion that smoking is only a fake happiness, glamour and self-esteem.

The final part of the session was connected with the subject of Handicraft, that is, if you want to deal with any addiction you need to learn through changing activities. Thus, the students were offered to make artificial flowers out of plastic bottles.

By the way, before the seminar our participants had delivered some handmade items to the people in the City Park ,instead of the cigarettes they were smoking.
