1. Read the text.

All substances, solids, liquids or gases, are composed of one or more of the chemical elements. Each element is composed of identical atoms. Each atom is composed of a small central nucleus consisting of protons and neutrons around which orbit shells of electrons. These electrons are very much smaller than protons and neutrons. The electrons in the outermost shell are called valence electrons and the electrical properties of the substance depend on the number of these electrons. Neutrons have no electric charge, but protons have a positive charge while electrons have a negative charge. In some substances, usually metals, the valence electrons are free to move from one atom to another and this is what constitutes an electric current.

2. Read and translate the text, then do exercise 3.

Electricity consists of a combination of free electrons along a conductor. To produce this current flow, a generator is placed at the end of the conductor in order to move the charge.

Conductors

Electricity needs a material which allows a current to pass through easily, which offers little resistance to the flow and is full of free electrons. This material is called a conductor and can be in the form of a bar, tube or sheet. The most commonly used conductors are wires, available in many sizes and thicknesses. They are coated with insulating materials such as plastic.

Semiconductors

Semiconductors such as silicon and germanium are used in transistors and their conductivity is halfway in between a conductor and an insulator. Small quantities of other substances, called impurities, are introduced in the material to increase the conductivity.

Insulators

A material which contains very few electrons is called an insulator. Glass, rubber, dry wood resists the flow of electric charge, and as such they are good insulating materials.

Holidays in Britain  

British people like any other nation like holidays. It is a time to rest and spend with relatives and friend. One of the most popular holidays in Britain is St. Valentine's Day. Every February 14th, boys and girls, husbands and wives, friends and even colleagues tell each other about their love and thank each other for the support and understanding. People send Valentine cards. They are not signed, instead people write "Your Valentine". The first Valentine of all was a Christian bishop. Before his death he sent a note of friendship to his jailer's blind daughter.

Most people in England like Pancake Race on Shrove Tuesday. At home families have pancakes for dinner. At school teachers and children have pancakes for school dinner. Everyone knows that pancakes are tasty, but not everyone knows that in England on Shrove Thursday, people race with them, fight for them. At Westminster School, in London, there is a pancake fight. The school cook tosses a pancake high into the air. The boys (one from each class) fight for the pancake. The boy who has the biggest piece is the winner.

Mothering Day is another old holiday in Britain. In the middle of March young people present their mothers with small gifts, flowers and a special kind of cake. This kind of cake was especially popular in the Middle Ages, but it is also possible to buy them today. Mothering Sunday is not the same as Mother's Day, which is an American holiday and is celebrated in May.

But the most famous holidays in Britain are Easter and Christmas. Easter is the time to present spring flowers and presents in the form of eggs. Christmas presents can be found under the Christmas tree. Most big offices, schools, colleges and universities have a dance or a party at Christmas. Christmas is an exciting time, but it can also be a very expensive time. You need money to buy Christmas presents for your family and friends, you need money to buy clothes for Christmas parties and so on. But British people like holidays and celebrate them with pleasure.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

In recent years, scientific and technological developments have drastically changed life on our planet as well as our views both of us as individuals in society and of entire Universe as a whole. Today, science and technology are closely related. Many modern technologies such as nuclear power and space flights depend on science and the application of scientific knowledge and principles. Each advance in pure science creates new opportunities for the development of new ways of making things to be used in daily life. In turn, technology provides science with new and more accurate instruments for its investigation and research.

Technology refers to the ways in which people use discoveries to satisfy needs and desires, to alter the environment, to improve their lives. Throughout human history, men and women have invented tools, machines, materials and techniques, to make their lives easier.

Of course, when we speak of technology today, we are looking at it in a much narrower sense. Generally, we mean industrial technology, or the technology that began about 200 years ago with the development of power-driven machines, growth of the factory system, and mass production of goods that has created the basis for our modern society. Today we often say that we live in an age of science and technology. According to one estimate, 90 % of all the scientists who ever lived, were alive and active in the 1970-s. This increased scientific activity has brought new ideas, processes, and inventions in ever-growing amount.

The scientific revolution that began in the 16th century was the first time that science and technology began to work together. Thus, Galileo, who made revolutionary discoveries in astronomy and physics, also built an improved telescope and patented a system of lifting water. However, it was not until the 19th century that technology truly was based on science and inventors began to build on the work of scientists. For example, Thomas Edison built on the early experiments of Faraday and Henry in his invention of the first practical system of electrical lighting. So too, Edison carried on his investigations until he found the carbon filament for the electric bulb in a research laboratory. This was the first true modern technological research.

In a sense, the history of science and technology is the history of all humankind.

"TYPES OF SOFTWARE»

A computer to complete a job requires more than just the actual equipment or hardware we see and touch. It requires Software — programs for directing the operation of a computer or electronic data.

Software is the final computer system component. These computer programs instruct the hardware how to conduct processing. The computer is merely a general-purpose machine which requires specific software to perform a given task. Computers can input, calculate, compare, and output data as information. Software determines the order in which these operations are performed.

Programs usually fall in one of two categories: system software and applications software.

System software controls standard internal computer activities. An operating system, for example, is a collection of system programs that aid in the operation of a computer regardless of the application software being used. When a computer is first turned on, one of the systems programs is booted or loaded into the computers memory. This software contains information about memory capacity, the model of the processor, the disk drives to be used, and more. Once the system software is loaded, the applications software can be brought in.

System programs are designed for the specific pieces of hardware. These programs are called drivers and coordinate peripheral hardware and computer activities. User needs to install a specific driver in order to activate a peripheral device. For example, if you intend to buy a printer or a scanner you need to worry in advance about the driver program which, though, commonly goes along with your device. By installing the driver you «teach» your mainboard to «understand» the newly attached part.

Applications software satisfies your specific need. The developers of application software rely mostly on marketing research strategies trying to do their best to attract more users (buyers) to their software. As the productivity of the hardware has increased greatly in recent years, the programmers nowadays tend to include as much as possible in one program to make software interface look more attractive to the user. These class of programs is the most numerous and perspective from the marketing point of view.

Data communication within and between computers systems is handled by system software. Communications software transfers data from one computer system to another. These programs usually provide users with data security and error checking along with physically transferring data between the two computer's memories. During the past five years the developing electronic network communication has stimulated more and more companies to produce various communication software, such as Web-Browsers for Internet.

1. Recycling is a technology that helps protect the environment and cut down on usage of raw materials. The steel, paper and glass industries recycle a lot. The largest recycler is the steel industry. It recovers more than 70 per cent of its original materials. For example, since 1988 they have produced the majority of new metal cans from old ones. Metal parts for cars and planes are other examples of recycling steel. Fragments of waste glass are widely used in construction. For producing writing paper and pens, used packing boxes are an ideal material. They are cheap and easy to recycle. Nowadays more and more recycling centres are appearing in our towns and cities.
2. Nowadays solar energy is widely used as an alternative form of power. Solar panels transform the energy from the sun into electricity. The first plane that does not need fuel was constructed in France in 2015. It uses only the sun's energy. The panels are placed on the huge wings of the plane. It doesn’t fly very fast. Solar energy can make the plane move at only 140 miles an hour. However, the plane is able to travel round the world. It is safe and can successfully cross areas of bad weather. In the future, engineers hope to construct a model that people can fly in. Our dream of environmentally friendly transport may come true very soon. Would you like to take a flight on the solar plane?
3. Nowadays people can’t imagine their kitchen without a refrigerator. The first refrigerators appeared at the end of the 18th century. They looked different: they were just iceboxes. The refrigerators of the past were just wooden boxes, sometimes lined inside with metal. People put ice into the box and then placed the food inside to keep it cool. The refrigerator, similar to the one that we have now, was produced by General Electric in 1911, in France. It was very expensive. In those days, with the same money you could buy two cars. Today, in developed countries almost every family has enough money to buy a refrigerator for their kitchen. It’s hard to imagine how difficult and uncomfortable our lives would be without a refrigerator.

“The Oldest Iron and Steel Base of Russia”.

The Urals are know as a region possessing the greatest mineral recourses in the world Hundreds of millions of years ago there was a sea where the Urals now are. The present day Urals are a small part of the one – time (когда-то) mountainous country which had by geological changes, the action of water, sun and air.

Over 1 200 deposits of various minerals have been found there, among them – some 900 kinds of metals ores and minerals. Greatest attention is paid to the mining of niobium deposits – the only deposits of this kind in the world.  Niobium is high – grade types of steel.

The Urals mountains contain also vast (great) deposits of tungsten and vanadium whish are largely used for smelting superhard steels. The iron ores of the Urals are often spoken about as having no equal in quantity and variety.

Non ferrous metals (copper, lead, tin, zinc, nickel, aluminum) which play a vital role in heave industry occur in Ural mountains as well as rare elements, precious and semi – precious metals and stones. The resources of platinum are known as the largest in the world.

The economic growth of the country is greatly influenced by the Urals. The Urals plants produce a large variety of metal alloys and various equipment  which are widely used all over the country. Most of high – grade steel products are also produced there.

As to the further development of the region, it can be said that practically it has no limits.

A. From Spain, potatoes spread to all parts of Europe. Spanish ships carried the vegetable to Italy in around 1560, making that country the first after Spain to eat potatoes. A bit later, the potato reached Austria and France, England and Germany, Portugal and Ireland. The potato was introduced to India, possibly as early as 1615, and then reached the most remote parts of China. In 1792 Captain William Bligh planted the first potatoes in Australia.

B. It is not unusual for new foods to be met with skepticism and fear, especially those arriving from a faraway continent. The potato, however, had a harder battle for acceptance than many other vegetables from the Americas. People didn’t like its unusual, ugly appearance and originally bitter taste. Calling someone a potato head is not a compliment because it means someone who is not very clever.

D. In 1853, that typically American product, the potato chip, was invented by pure accident. Annoyed when the guest of the restaurant sent back his fried potatoes because they were too thick, George Crum, the chef, thought he would teach him a lesson. He sliced some potatoes paper thin, deep-fried, and salted them. The guest loved them. However, potato chips began to be commercially manufactured only in 1915.

E. Potatoes are still making history. In October 1995, the potato became the first vegetable to be grown in space. NASA created the technology with the goal of feeding astronauts on long space voyages and, eventually, feeding future space colonies. The environmentally friendly potato was chosen due to its ability to grow under different conditions.

F. Potato festivals are very popular in the United States. They are held in autumn to celebrate farmers and the potato. During the festivals adults and children take part in fun parades and carnivals, taste new potato dishes, learn about growing potatoes, and join in some fun potato competitions. There are usually huge firework displays in the evening.

 G. According to the United Nations report the annual diet of an average citizen in the beginning of the 21st century included about 33 kg of potatoes. However, the local importance of the potato is extremely variable. It remains an essential vegetable in Europe, but the most rapid increase has occurred in southern and eastern Asia. Nearly a third of the world's potatoes are harvested in China and India nowadays.

Mechanical Properties of Materials

Designers and engineers are usually more interested in the behavior of materials under load or when in a magnetic field than in why they behave as they do.

Yet the better one understands the nature of materials and the reasons for their physical and mechanical properties the more quickly and wisely will he/she be able to choose the proper material for a given design. Generally, a material property is the measured magnitude of its response to a standard test performed according to a standard procedure in a given environment. In engineering materials the loads are mechanical or physical in nature and the properties are recorded in handbooks or, for new materials, are made available by the supplier. Frequently such information is tabulated for room-temperature conditions only, so when the actual service conditions are at subfreezing or elevated temperatures, more information is needed.

All materials have properties that designers must use to their best advantage. The following terms describe these properties: Ductility is a softness present in some materials, such as copper andaluminum, that permits them to be formed by stretching (drawing) or hammering without breaking. Wire is made of ductile materials that can be drawn through a die. Brittleness is a characteristic of metals that will not stretch without breaking, such as cast irons and hardened steels. Malleability is the ability of a metal to be rolled or hammered withoutbreaking. Hardness is the ability of a metal to resist being dented when it receives a blow. Toughness is the property of being resistant to cracking and breaking while remaining malleable. Elasticity is the ability of a metal to return to its original shape after being bent or stretched.

Electromagnetic Relay

Electromagnetic devices called relays are widely used in various branches of industry.

The main parts of a relay are an electromagnet, a spring and an armature. When a current starts flowing in the electromagnet winding, the armature moves and the spring closes the contacts. The primary circuit of a relay is its electromagnet circuit and the secondary circuit is the one closed by the contacts.

When there is no current in the relay’s primary circuit, the spring pulls the armature and the contacts open.

Fig. 18 shows how a relay is used to control the work of an electric motor. The relay is placed close to the motor which is connected to its secondary circuit. The armature closes the contacts of the secondary circuit, and the motor starts operating; it will stop when the relay opens.

Without a relay, conductors with a large cross-section would have to be brought to the motor. This would be very uneconomical. The current in a relay is tens and even thousands of times smaller than that used to power the motor. Therefore, the connecting wires can have small cross-sections.

In many systems the relay primary circuit operates automatically. Every evening and morning street lights are switched on and off from the main control panel by means of a great number of relays.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF METALS AND ALLOYS

The word constitution used with reference to metallic substances does not have the same meaning as composition. Constitution denotes the manner of arrangement of the metal atoms as to geometric form in solid crystals, and the regular or ordered arrangement of different kinds of metal atoms and their relation to each other in such a crystal.

The pattern formed by this orderly arrangement of the atoms is known as the space lattice.

Most metals crystallize with one of the three following lattice structures:

• Close-packed cubic: copper, nickel, lead, aluminium, cobalt, silver, gold, platinum.
• Body-centred   cubic:   iron,   molybdenum,   tungsten,   chromium.
• Hexagonal  close-packed:   zinc,  cadmium,  magnesium,  beryllium, titanium.

This union of atoms into a geometric array is the physical difference between liquid and solid metal.

The formation of metal crystals within  a melt begins at each cooling surface of the liquid mass and extends from the exterior to the interior as heat is lost from the mass. Every change in the conditions of cooling, such as increasing or decreasing the rate at which heat is conducted away from the freezing mass, will have an influence on the size and shape of the crystals and, therefore, on the constitution and properties of the solidified mass.

Melting and Boiling Points. - The temperature at which a metal melts, is called the melting point, the metals of lower melting points are generally the soft metals and those of high melting the hard metals.

The boiling point of a substance depends on the surrounding-pressure. The term "boiling point" refers to the temperature at which the metal boils under normal atmospheric pressure.

Electrical   Conductivity. - The  electrical   conductivity of  a substance is the electrical conducting power of a unit length per  unit of cross-sectional  area.  The electrical  resistance  of metals or alloys is increased by decreasing the size of the crystals and, therefore, increasing the number of crystal boundaries. In general, all metals increase in resistivity with increase in  impurities.  The resistivity of metals  is  also  increased  in most cases by an increase in temperature.

Heat Conductivity. - Heat conductivity is measured as the heat conducting ability of a unit length or thickness of a substance per unit of cross-sectional area.

Magnetism. - Magnetism is measured as the magnetic force exerted by a unit volume of a substance under standard magnetizing force.  Iron, cobalt and  nickel  are the only metals possessing considerable magnetism at room temperature, and they become non-magnetic when heated to a certain temperature.  Strong permanent magnets have been  made chiefly of one of several  compositions of steel,  but in  recent years  a number of magnet alloys of much greater magnetism, able to exert   forces  many times  their  own  weights,   have  been   developed.

Density and Porosity. - Porosity, the quality of containing pores is lack of denseness. Density, on the other hand, denotes weight per unit of volume. The distinction will be manifest from the fact that some heavy metals, like grey cast ironware porous enough to leak under heavy hydraulic pressures, whereas some lightweight metals, like aluminium, are dense and compact.

Most metals expand on heating and contract on cooling.

Colour. - Most of the metals are silvery white or grey in colour. Copper is the only red metal, and gold the only yellow one, although a number of copper-base alloys are also yellow. All solid metals have metallic lustre, although the true colour and lustre of many metals are often obscured by a coating of oxide — which may be white, grey, red, brown, bluish, or black.

My plans for future

I would like to talk about my plans for future, because it`s significant to start planning your career  beforehand.  I  study  at  the  Institute  of  Economics  and Entrepreneurship so when I graduate and get my diploma I will be able to find a job in the sphere of business.

What  kind  of  knowledge  and  what  traits  of  character  should  I  have  to succeed?  These are the questions that people  often  ask  themselves.  Nowadays employers demand perfect knowledge, work experience, a  range  of  transferable skills and such qualities as efficiency, punctuality, practicality, creativity and many others. If you want to get a good job, you must convince your employer that you are the best  candidate  for  it.  Choosing your  future  job  you  should  take  into consideration your interests, abilities and opportunities. Besides, you should know your employer's requirements.

If  you  want  to  become  a  good  specialist,  to  keep  your  job  and  to  get  a promotion, you should be competent. It is a combination of knowledge, skills and behavior,  the  ability  to  perform  a  specific  role.  Today  executives  and  managers don't  only  speak  of  skills  and  qualifications  of  their  employees,  but  of  their competencies  that  measure  a  person's  appropriateness  for  a  particular  job.

Competence  development  is  a  long  process  that  requires  training  and  personal development. Competence grows through experience. The ability to make the right decision is crucial in the world of business. A well-considered decision will lead your team to success; a poor decision can result into failure. A good employee should demonstrate problem-solving capability and think about what is to be achieved and how it is to be achieved. Many companies

need people who can work effectively in different countries and cultures. Therefore it is important to know at least one foreign language. A person must remember that the traditions and customs that he or she is used to may be inadmissible in another country. That is why one should be aware of intercultural differences.
