                                                    The Internet.

When you use Internet you can A22…….for the answer to just about any question you can think of. You can go shopping A23…….in the world. You can read books, visit museums and art galleries, listen to music, chat to people, play games or read the latest news in any language. You can find a map that will A24…….you to the friends you are visiting next week in London. You can meet people who have the same interests as you, or find out the weather forecast. You can send on e-mail from your home in Budapest to your auntie in Los Angeles and it will only cost you the same as a local phone call. And you can A25…….your latest photos with it, if you know how!

Of course you have to A26…….up your computer to the Net, using a modem and a phone line to a service (or Access) provider. You have to pay for your service provider, and pay the phone calls. At the moment you don’t pay for the things you read on it, though this might well change in the future. Websites often have advertisements, and hope to make money in this way, though some ask for a payment

Not everyone agrees that the Net is a great idea, A27……..Some people say that it’s full of information, but we don’t really need it. They say that we got A28…….well before it arrived, and that there is little point in spending all our time watching computer screens. You’ll have to make up your own mind about the answers. For one thing is certain. The Net is here to stay.

                           The Queen of the Pacific Rim.

1. The state capital of New South Wales, Sydney is a thriving centre for both business

and the arts. The city has all the amenities- top shopping, excellent restaurants and

buzzing nightlife. Situated between the mountains and the sea, it also offers the great outdoors. The Pacific Ocean swells onto golden beaches, while a seasonally shifting

palette of colours unfolds further inland over the Blue Mountains.

B.          After the Australian Federation was created in 1901, the traditional bickering          

between Sydney and its main rival, Melbourne, was settled in 1908, by making

Canberra the new national capital. However, until 1927, when the city of        

 Canberra was completed, Melbourne remained the seat of national government.

Nevertheless, Sydneysiders insist that their city remains true capital of Australia.

 To Melbourne, Sydney will always be hedonistic and shallow, just to Sydney,    

  Melbourne will always be grey and intellectual.

C.        Who can argue with the claim that Sydney has the most magnificent harbour in

  the world? Its intricate coastal geography of headlands and secluded bays is the

  stunning setting for two of the modern world’s most ambitious architectural

  achievements- the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It is

 therefore hardly surprising that much tourist attention is focused on the harbour,

  the perpetual motion of people arriving and departing Circular Quay and the

 enduring awe that visitors experience at the steps of the Opera House.

D.     Sydney Opera House must be one of the most recognisable images of the

    modern world-up there with the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building-

    and one of the most photographed. It is as representative of Australia as the

    pyramids are of Egypt and the Coliseum of Rome. It is viewed from a ferry or

    from the air and is really unforgettable. The Opera House was made a UNESCO

    World Heritage Site on June 2007.

E.       Behind these modern monoliths, there is a wealth of history, culture and

    tradition. In inner- city Sydney, Macquarie Place and Macquarie Street are

   characterized by their imposing Victorian banking chambers and municipal

    buildings, while further afield, the areas of Kings Cross, Darlinghurst and

    Paddington are thriving cosmopolitan communities, each with their own

    distinct character. Kings Cross is famous for café society, Darlinghurst for

    Mardi Gras Parade, Paddington has fashionable restaurants, galleries and

    antique shops.

F .    Australia’s white history has eclipsed its indigenous inheritance and, although

  Sydney has the highest Aboriginal population of any Australian city,    

    a stroll around the city’s streets offers little evidence that it has anything

    other than a white heritage. While museums, galleries, theatre and dance

    troupes pay tribute to the archeological and cultural legacy of indigenous

    culture, Aborigines in the city remain very much  an invisible minority.

G.    With the Olympics, Sydney came of age as one of the world’s great cities

        The Games’ smooth running has been attributed to the thousands of local

        volunteers. But the Games did more than affect the city’s mindset: they

        transformed its physical appearance. Streets and public areas were

        remodelled, long neglected eyesores were removed and new street furniture

        erected, resulting in a city centre that is more pleasant now.

The average American teenager has their first alcoholic drink at the age of thirteen but most teenagers don’t know how to drink sensibly.1/3rd of US teenagers believe that an average can of beer contains less alcohol than an average glass of whisky and 4.4 million teenagers have monthly drinking binges (binge drinking is at least five drinks one after the other for men and four for woman). 16% of teenagers have lost consciousness after drinking alcohol.

Drinking too much can be very dangerous. Many kids don’t know that you can actually die from too much alcohol. Drinking and driving is a big problem in America. Every day in the USA 6 teenagers get into a car and they don’t get out alive because of drinking and driving. Drinking alcohol from a young age can cause problems when you are older, too. Young people who start drinking before 15 are more likely to have a drink problem when they are adults.

In the USA the legal age for drinking alcohol is 21 years. This high limit saves thousands of lives. But American teenagers feel that the limit is unreasonably high. After all, they can vote, marry, buy a house and join the army before the age of 21(at 18 years old).That is why a lot of American teenagers drink illegally. Even President Bush’ s twin teenage daughters have been repeatedly caught under-age drinking.
