Primary schools in England

In Great Britain school begins at the age of 4 or 5.Many boys and girls usually leave school at the age of 16(sixteen).

In England the school year begins on the first Tuesday of September. Pupils don’t have any books or bags with them, as they will get them later.

Classes usually begin at 9.Their classes are not always formal- pupils often sit at their desks but they also often sit on the carpet on the floor and listen to the teacher.

English pupils often play outdoors.

English children have classes five days a week. Classes are usually over at about 4 o’clock. Children don’t go to school on Saturday and Sunday.

Schools in England have names, not numbers (Green Hill School, St.Mary’s School)

At the age of 4 or 5 children go to infant schools or infant classes. They play,     sing songs, draw pictures in pencil and colour them, spend a lot of time outdoors. Their classes are informal, but they begin to learn how to write, read and count.

When children are 7 they go to junior schools, where they spend 4 years.             So children spend 7 years in primary school. (Primary school is over when pupils are 11.)

Junior schools are real schools. Classes are more formal. Pupils sit at the desks, they follow a regular timetable. They have got many subjects on the timetable. (English, Maths, History, Nature Study, Geography, Art, Swimming, P.E., and Religion)

In many primary schools children wear uniforms but in some- they don’t.
