Greetings, everyone! How is it going? | It’s quite complicated as we are approaching our state exams. But we are managing. |
I am certain that you will succeed in everything you do. As for our lesson, for the very beginning I would ask you to listen to the recording of a speech. From your history lessons you definitely know who the speaker is and what events he is talking about. Discuss the following questions in groups of 3-4 students and give your answers. Who is the speaker in this video? | It’s a leader of one of the Allies. As he is speaking English it must be either Churchill or Truman. |
You are totally right, it’s Winston Churchill’s speech. Which event does he refer to? | He definitely refers to the victory over Germany. |
Exactly! So, based on this speech, what is his attitude towards our country? | He mentions our grand contribution to the victory and the military might of Soviet Russia. He also shows his gratitude to us as one of the Allies. So, his attitude is positive. |
That’s correct. And finally, what challenge does he imply while saying that one mustn’t forget the efforts that lie ahead? | Probably he implies that rebuilding all the cities destroyed during the war will be challenging. He could also speak about Japan that still has to be defeated. |
Both of these ideas are great. As for the correct answer, you’ll find it out a bit later when we look through the whole speech. Now, take a look at the exercise given to you. You should look through the transcript of the audio fragment you have listened to before and put the verbs in brackets into the correct forms. We will check your answers in three minutes.
Turn on the worksheets you were given - there you have a full transcript of Churchill’s speech. Analyze your answers. What verbs were the most difficult to put into a correct form? | In the sentence about France I have used Past Simple instead of Past Perfect. The actions were in the chronological order, but ‘after’, of course, implies that Past Perfect is needed. It was also not obvious that Passive Voice is needed in some cases. In some cases I was uncertain whether I should use present tenses or not, but, of course, at the moment of Churchill’s speech it was up to date. |
Based on the difficulties you faced in this task, what goal should this lesson have? | So, it’s not going to be about history, is it? |
No, but history will provide us with context and relevant examples. | Then it is definitely related to Grammar. And considering that all the teachers are giving us end-of-the-year-tests, are we preparing for one? |
Yes, we do. So, what are we going to focus on today? | Based on the task we have started the lesson with, it seems that we are going to revise verbs, tenses, Passive and Active Voice, and maybe some modals? |
Precisely, but the modals will probably be your hometask. Instead, we will revise one more thing. Pay attention, we have listened to the politician’s speech. | Maybe, we will revise some Reported Speech, too, then, won’t we? |
Exactly. So, our goal is… | …to revise, based on the relevant speech, grammar related to verbs. And the tasks are to revise tenses, Active/Passive and, finally, reported speech. |
Этап актуализации знаний
Let’s move on then. Now, in pairs look through the full transcript and put the verbs in italics into the table below. | (Students replies are given in the form of a table) |
Which of the sentences are given in the Passive Voice? | we were joined by the military might of Soviet Russia gallant France had been struck down this agreement will be ratified |
Этап обобщения и систематизации знаний
Now, let’s sum up what we remember about Passive Voice in general. First of all, what form does the main verb have? | It is always in the Past Participle form. |
And we show the tense only via an auxiliary verb. Which ones do we use for each group of tenses in the Passive? | We use forms of ‘to be’ for Simple, ‘to be + being’ for Continuous, and ‘to have + been’ for Perfect. |
Great, then let’s practice it by turning the sentences we had in the previous task into Passive. | Present Simple: Justice and retribution are called for. Present Continuous: The Russian troops are still being resisted by the Germans. Present Perfect: The injury has been inflicted on Great Britain. Past Simple: The act of unconditional surrender has been signed by the designated head of the German State. The military might of Soviet Russia joined us. Past Perfect: Germans had struck down gallant France. Future Simple: They will ratify this agreement. The agreement will be signed by General Zhukov. |
Amazing. Now let’s talk a bit about the reported speech. I believe you remember the basics. | Yes, when we report some sentences with ‘told’, ‘said’ and so on, we have to change Present into Past, and Past Simple into Past Perfect. Plus, the indicators, such as yesterday or ‘...ago’ must be changed too. |
Then let’s use our table again. Now your task is to change sentences from Direct speech into the Reported one. Please, start the sentences with ‘Winston Churchill said…’ | (Students replies are given in the form of a table) |
Этап самоконтроля | |
For the final self-assessment task, let’s work with the paragraph we have started our lesson with. Imagine that you are journalists who have to put an extract from his speech into your article. How will you quote it? | Churchill said that the German war was therefore at an end. He explained that after years of intense preparation Germany had hurled herself on Poland at the beginning of September, 1939; and, in pursuance of our guarantee to Poland and in agreement with the French Republic, Great Britain, the British Empire and Commonwealth of Nations, had declared war upon that foul aggression. After gallant France had been struck down we, from this Island and from our united Empire, had maintained the struggle single-handed for a whole year until we had been joined by the military might of Soviet Russia, and later by the overwhelming power and resources of the United States of America. He concluded that finally almost the whole world had been combined against the evil-doers, who were then prostrate before us. Churchill noted that our gratitude to our splendid Allies went forth from all our hearts in that Island and throughout the British Empire. He said that we might allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing; but told everyone not not to forget for a moment the upcoming toil and efforts. |
It’s almost perfect. The only thing you mustn’t forget is that pronouns change accordingly. If he speaks about Britain, the guarantees to Poland are not ‘our’ but ‘their’. | So, it must be ‘They had been joined by the military might of Soviet Russia’, for example. |
Этап рефлексии учебной деятельности
Exactly. Correct the mistakes, please, and try not to repeat them at the end-of-the-year test. As for now, let’s reflect on what we have achieved at this lesson. | I have revised that we must change the pronouns in the Reported Speech. And I now remember that we need to add been to the auxiliary verb in Perfect Passive. I have learnt that initially the act of unconditional surrender was signed by General Susloparov on Soviet behalf. I thought it was Zhukov. And we worked with authentic audio from that time today. I thought it would have been more difficult. |
That was the point. I wanted to show you that by the end of school education you are perfectly capable of understanding such texts and audios. But the most important thing was revision, of course. As for your homework, there are modal verbs in the text, I have made them bold. Please, put them into the table in ex. 8. See you next week. | We will! Good bye! |
ΙΙΙ. Удалось ли:
Решить на необходимом (или даже оптимальном) уровне поставленные задачи урока и получить соответствующие им результаты обучения;

3. Look through the text and put the verbs in italics into the table below.
German armed forces surrendered unconditionally on May 7. Hostilities in Europe ended officially at one minute past midnight, May 9 1945 (British Double Summer Time).
Yesterday morning at 2:41 a.m. at General Eisenhower's Headquarters, General Jodl, the representative of the German High Command, and of Grand Admiral Doenitz, the designated head of the German State, signed the act of unconditional surrender of all German Land, sea, and air forces in Europe to the Allied Expeditionary Force, and simultaneously to the Soviet High Command.
General Bedell Smith, Chief of Staff of the Allied Expeditionary Force, and General Francois Sevez signed the document on behalf of the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, and General Susloparov signed on behalf of the Russian High Command.
Today this agreement will be ratified and confirmed at Berlin, where Air Chief Marshal Tedder, Deputy Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, and General de Lattre de Tassigny will sign on behalf of General Eisenhower. General Zhukov will sign on behalf of the Soviet High Command. The German representatives will be Field-Marshal Keitel, Chief of the High Command, and the Commanders-in-Chief of the German Army, Navy, and Air Forces.
Hostilities will end officially at one minute after midnight tonight (Tuesday, May 8), but in the interests of saving lives the "Cease fire" began yesterday to be sounded all along the front, and our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today.
The Germans are still in places resisting the Russian troops, but should they continue to do so after midnight they will, of course, deprive themselves of the protection of the laws of war, and will be attacked from all quarters by the Allied troops. It is not surprising that on such long fronts and in the existing disorder of the enemy the orders of the German High Command should not in every case be obeyed immediately. This does not, in our opinion, with the best military advice at our disposal, constitute any reason for withholding from the nation the facts communicated to us by General Eisenhower of the unconditional surrender already signed at Rheims, nor should it prevent us from celebrating today and tomorrow (Wednesday) as Victory in Europe days.
Today, perhaps, we shall think mostly of ourselves. Tomorrow we shall pay a particular tribute to our Russian comrades, whose prowess in the field has been one of the grand contributions to the general victory.
The German war is therefore at an end. After years of intense preparation, Germany hurled herself on Poland at the beginning of September, 1939; and, in pursuance of our guarantee to Poland and in agreement with the French Republic, Great Britain, the British Empire and Commonwealth of Nations, declared war upon this foul aggression. We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing; but let us not forget for a moment the toil and efforts that lie ahead. Japan, with all her treachery and greed, remains unsubdued. The injury she has inflicted on Great Britain, the United States, and other countries, and her detestable cruelties, call for justice and retribution. We must now devote all our strength and resources to the completion of our task, both at home and abroad. Advance, Britannia! Long live the cause of freedom! God save the King!
