Introduction

Актуальность. Российские граждане часто выезжают за пределы страны на экскурсии, на учебу, на отдых, по работе и для других целей. Для того чтобы за рубежом достойно представить свою Родину, место, где ты живешь, то, чем ты гордишься, надо владеть информацией и уметь ее представить на иностранном языке. 

I live in Perm Krai. It is my native place. Perm Krai was founded in 2005. So, it is 13 years old. It has the rich past, wonderful present and brilliant future. Perm Krai is our Motherland and we must know the most important things about our region. We must understand what the names Perm the Great, Vishersky Nature Reserve,        Kungur Ice Cave, the open-air museum “Khokhlovka” and others mean. I devote my work to Perm Krai.

So, Perm Krai is the main item of the work.

The aim of the work is to create a workbook about Perm Krai in English for pupils and teachers. 

In order to reach the aim we should:

  • collect information about Perm Krai;
  • choose the exercises;
  • find the tasks;
  • make the presentation;
  • publish the workbook.

Some exercises were found and chosen from the collections of the Student Competitions in English for the pupils of the educational institutions in our region. Besides, I tried to think of my own exercises.

Task 1. Match the descriptions and the names of the towns.

a) National park is situated 150 km from the town of Chusovoy. During a short visit one can see different landscapes and climatic zones from taiga to tundra. In the national park there are animals, typical of European forests, Arctics, Siberian taiga: partridge, glutton, marsh-otter, sable, rain-deer, elk. In the national park there are a lot of berries and mushrooms.

b) The settlement is known since the 12th century, the Russians settled there in 1451. It is one of the northernmost and most ancient towns of the region. Half a century earlier than Columbus landed on the Caribbean islands, the Russians started to conquer their own New World - the Urals and Siberia. It was one of the first settlements and the capital of this vast and enormously rich province - the so called Great Perm. The road crossing the Urals and leading to Siberia was beginning there.

c) This town was founded in 1430 is 214 km . Till now the beautiful set of churches of the 17th century is preserved here. You can see the museum of local studies, the museum of salt industry. The village Oryol is situated nearby, where Yermak expedition started from in the late 16th century - the first Russian military expedition to Siberia, which was the beginning the joining of this boundless territory to Russia.

d) This town was founded in 1932 is 189 km . Europe’s largest deposit of potassium salt. The town gives a good opportunity to visit a salt mine and the underground sanatorium where naturally ionized air is used for treatment.

e) This town was founded in 1648 on the Sylva river. It is one of the ancient Ural towns, situated on the main trade road from China and Siberia to the central Russia and Western Europe. During 2 centuries it was a place of lively fairs. Wealthy local merchants were able not only to finance the construction of impressive cathedrals and other communal buildings in the town, but also to acquire property in rather remote places, like tea plantations on the Ceylon island. The town is also known due to its stone-carving factory and stone-engraving college, and to the ice cave.

f) This place is situated 93 km from the town of Kungur. The world-known zone of UFO-activity is situated in the neighbourhood, on the bank of the Usva. The place of the pilgrimages of UFOlogists from Russia and the other countries of the ex-USSR. Supposed area of the UFO landing and of the contacts with ET visitors.

g) The capital of Perm Krai is a large transport center. The city features has a favorable geographical position due to its location in the center of the country on the intersection of the railway between Europe and Asia (Trans-Siberian Line) with the submeridional water way leading to the five seas.

Task 2. Read the descriptions of the climate and find the text about the climate in Perm Krai.

  • The climate is severe with long cold dry winters and hot, usually dry summers.
  • It has continental climate. Winters are long and snowing. Average temperatures in January vary from −18 °C in the northeast part to −15 °C in southwest part. Record low is −53 °C (in the north).
  • The climate is Mediterranean or, in the south-east, subtropical.
  • The climate is typical of a continental. Winters vary from cool to cold further inland. Average annual temperatures range from 5.5°C −7 °C in the north, to 11 °C − 13 °C in the south.

Task 1. Пришло время проявить свои творческие способности. Предлагаем составить предложение, темой которого будет Пермский край. Но есть ряд условий:

• это должно быть одно предложение;

• предложение должно состоять из 10 слов;

Conclusion

The aim of the work is fulfilled. All tasks have done. We published the workbook about Perm Krai in English for pupils and teachers and can offer it. All exercises in the workbook are divided into 6 parts: writing, reading, grammar, vocabulary, creative and logical tasks. 

In the workbook there are some tasks connected with the geographical position of Perm Krai. More than that there are exercises about rivers, towns and mountains. To do the tasks you should write the words in the chart, match the parts of the words to make the Perm Krai sights, write the Wikipedia article about Perm Krai, guess the words or complete the sentences with the words from the box.

The information of this work can be used as additional and optional information to prepare for different competitions in English. Pupils can do the exercises from the workbook about Perm Krai themselves or with their teachers.
