I. Introduction
Traditions are very important in our life. They play a great role. Traditions teach us to respect the past and at the same time they link the past to the present.
In 1993 school № 17 in Balakovo, Saratov region received the status of the gymnasium.
During these years gymnasium has developed its own traditions, has its own anthem, symbol, traditional holidays.
We are proud of our traditions and carefully keep them up.
The task of my work is to describe the traditions of our gymnasium. The aim of my work is to tell about them.
II. Gymnasium Traditions
Our gymnasium has its own traditions, its own anthem, symbol and traditional holidays. I want to tell about them.
The Scientific Owl is a symbol of the gymnasium since 1995. The Scientific Owl opens school year on September 1 and gives instructions to the graduates on the day of the Last Bell.
Our anthem is song “Let’s Take Hands by Hands, My Friends” by Bulat Okudzhava.
III. Traditional Holidays and Contests
Every year in our school there are a lot of holidays and contests, some of them have become traditional. We have such traditional holidays and contests as:

1. Knowledge Day
On this day we hold the traditional meetings, but they are unusual, with unusual characters. Sometimes such characters as a hut, a little mermaid, strongmen, clowns and other “artists” come to the meetings.
2. Teacher's Day
On that day pupils usually congratulate their teachers, read poetry, give them flowers, sing songs. As for us, such concerts are unusual because the children sing with their teachers. The performance is always interesting and unforgettable.
3. Autumn contest "Nature and Fantasy"
Traditionally every autumn we have a contest «Nature and fantasy». Each class makes crafts from natural material. These are wonderful and beautiful handmade works.
4. Gymnasium Day
This day is especially solemn for all pupils and teachers. It is celebrated on October 19.
Every holiday has its own theme. Here are some of them:
"Theatre of the school year"
"Sea of Knowledge"
"Time"
"Travelling"
"Contrasts and opposites"
“Our Life Is a Game”
“Classic and Modernity”
The Scientific Owl is always at the holiday. The head master makes a speech and congratulates everybody. On this day new pupils became gymnasists. On this day there is usually a great performance; each class prepares its introduction performance of the class.
5. Mother's Day
Mother’s Day comes on the last Sunday in November. The modern Mother's Day is celebrated in various ways in many parts of the world. We congratulate our moms and invite them for a special party.
6. The contest “Alternatively Decorated New Year Tree “
This is another traditional contest in our school. Every year each class should decorate New Year tree or make an unusual New Year tree. This collective work is very exciting. All New Year trees are in the hall, and everyone can admire them.
7. New Year Party
New Year is perhaps the most favourite holiday. In our gymnasium it is a very special holiday. Traditionally it is prepared and carried out the creative group "Galaxy". Each holiday is unique! But the most interesting thing always happens later. We are waiting for an exciting show - a musical fairy tale, where the artists are also our pupils.
Since 2000 the creative group "Galaxy" represented 9 stories:

8. The Dubbing Teachers’ Day
This day is usually before Teacher's Day or before The International Women's day. On this day students of the 11th form work instead of teachers. They choose subjects beforehand and prepare for the lessons. The headmaster is a student too. At this time the teachers accept congratulations and drink tea in the teacher’s room.
9. Sport Holidays
It is a real holiday because there is not only sport completion between teams but there are a lot of singing and dancing. All the holidays are thematic. The Scientific Owl is always helps at the holiday. The holiday is usually held in April.
10. Military Sports Competitions
The founder of this tradition was Pukhov Victor Mikhailovich. Unfortunately, he died two years ago. But this tradition continues. The stages of the competition held during the school year. They are consist of power and athletic competitions, shooting, knowledge of history. The competition involved both boys and girls of the 9 th, the 10 th and the 11 th forms.
11. Victory Day
Every year on the ninth of May all the people in our country celebrate Victory Day. The 9th of May was the final day of the Great Patriotic War. It was in 1945. We have special meetings. Every year in spring we put flowers to the monument to honour the memory of the war heroes. We congratulate war veterans and give them flowers, too.
12. Family Festival
On the 15 th of May a special festival is held in our gymnasium. This is Family Festival. It’s a rather new tradition. There were only three festivals. Families from our gymnasium sing, dance or perform something. The symbol of the festival is a Bee. The bee dancing traditionally opens the festival.
13. The Last Bell
On the 25th of May the last bell rang for those who graduate school. The last bell is organized at our school in a proper way. It is a very remarkable day in the life of all the pupils. The pupils of the first form and the pupils of the eleventh one are preparing for this day with great pleasure.
IV. The Keeper of Traditions
A very creative person works at our gymnasium. His name is Otstavnov Dmitri Vitalyevich. Thanks to him our holidays are interesting and unusual. We can call him the keeper of gymnasium traditions.
V. Conclusion
Traditions are important in our lives. They provide stability. Activities that are observed year in and year out become a means by which our gymnasium can build trust and security. Regardless of what else may happen, the traditions will not change. So much in our lives these days is temporary. In my work I wanted to tell about the traditions of our gymnasium, to show our anthem, symbol and traditional holidays.
