The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the United States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand differ in many ways. The nature of these countries, their weather and climate and the way of life of their people are differrent. Each country has its own history, customs, traditions, holidays, its own official and unofficial symbols.
Unofficial symbols of English-speaking countries The unofficial symbol Of Great Britain can be called the red phone box. It was designed by Sir G. G. Scott in the 1920s and 1930s.In 1985, most of them were replaced by modern telephone boxes. The people protested so much that the old red boxes were put back in London’s streets. Canada This country is associated with one of Niagara Falls-Horseshoe Falls. It is the best known natural wonder. A mass of water is falling over a cliff 163 feet high (49metres) with a terrible noise. The roar of the falling water can be heard at a distance of 25 kilometres. Australia One of the most beautiful things you can see in Australia is Ayers Rock (Uluru). This huge rock is 348 metres high and 3,6 kilometres long. Uluru is 600 million years old. The best time to see it is at the end of the day, when its colour changes from yellow to gold, red and then purple. Uluru is a sacred place for Australia’s native people, the Aborigines. New Zealand There is no question that the Silver Fern is the most recognised symbol of New Zealand. For over a century the Silver Fern has been the emblem of sports men and women. The Silver Fern is used extensively as a symbol of tourism, trade organisations and commercial brands. The Silver Fern says "New Zealand".
New Zealand It is an unofficial symbol of New Zealand. The Pohutukava festival takes place in November and December every year. One of the most noticeable plants is the Pohutukawa which detonates with brilliant red flowers around December.
