Some Facts about India The official name of the country, INDIA, comes from Ancient Persian word “ Hindu ” how they called the river Ind. The Constitution of India accepts also the name Bharat , after the name of the ancient Indian Tsar. The third name is Hindustan – from the time of the Empire of Great Moguls. But this name is not official. INDIA is a federative republic. It has 28 states, 6 united territories and National Capital District DELHI .

The State flag of India has three colours: orange, white and green and a dark-blue wheel with 24 spokes in the centre, which is called “ashoka chakra”. The National emblem consists of four lions which mean bravery, strength, cleverness and ability to frighten.

Some More Facts The head of the country is the President. He is elected for 5 years. The head of the government is the Prime Minister. He is appointed by the President. The Parliament has 2 Houses: The Council of States and The People’s House. Military Forces of India are the 3 rd in the world.

The most part of India occupies the Plato Deccan. It is very old. It has the shape of a triangle. Mountain chains The West and The East Gatos run in the both sides of the coasts. To the south the Plato is becoming higher – The Napery and The Cardamom Mountains.

43 % of the coast - sandy beaches , 11% - stones and rocks, 46 % moors. The coast is not good for ports and harbors, that is why they are in the mouths of large rivers or artificial.

The Climate of India It is greatly influenced by The Himalayas and The Dessert Tar. There are three seasons in the country: wet and hot with heavy rains (June –October), dry and cool with Passas (November to February) and very hot and dry (Mach – May). There are areas of ice in The Karakorum and the Zaskar in The Himalayas.

The Population of India It takes the second place in the world after China ( 1.15 milliard). This country has the most nationalities in the world. India has 21 official languages, 2 languages has the status of the state ones – Hindi and English. 1652 dialects are spoken in the country. More than 70 % of Indians live in the country. The largest cities of India are Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore e.t.c. The greatest problem nowadays is the level of poorness. ¼ of population are very poor

The Culture of India The architecture of India shows all the varieties of Indian culture. It is the mixture of Mongol and South Indian examples of architecture.

TadzheMahall – a mausoleum and a mosque in Agra. It was built in memory of Emperor Shah-Dhahran's wife. It is 74 m tall, stands on a large and massive platform. It is made of marble and changes its colour in different parts of day and night.

Film industry in India is the biggest in the world. Bollywood, the centre of it, is situated in Mumbai. It produces commercial films and is the most fruitful in the world. Indian dances are splendid. They are really wonderful. They have their own language.

SARI – traditional women’s dress. It is just a piece of material from 4,5 to 9 m long and about 1,2 m in width. They wrap it up the body and wear it with a blouse called choly. DHOTI – traditional men’s clothes. It is also a piece of material from 2 to 5 m long. It is usually white. It looks like shorts when a man wears it.

Elephant is a symbol of good-will character. It is a Tsar animal and is valued for its wisdom. A White elephant declared about the birth of Buda. Elephant lives very long - that is why it symbolizes overcoming of death.

TOURISM The ideal season for tourism in almost all parts of India is period between October and March. It is better to visit Ladakh from July to the middle of September. The most comfortable time in the South of India is from January to April. Tourists mostly come to India in “cool” months of the year – October, November and February to see and visit as many places of interests and attractions as possible.
