London Zoo

London Zoo in Regent's Park was opened on April 27, 1828 as a place for scientific study. London Zoo is the oldest scientific zoo in the world.
It opened to the public in 1847. London Zoo is now managed by the Zoological Society of London, established in 1826.

The history of the zoo is long and very interesting. Exotic animals were first taken to Britain in the 13th century when King Henry III received a gift of leopards and elephants. The animals lived in the Tower of London in special place.

Later the King of Norway presented Henry III with a polar bear. The bear liked to go fishing in the Thames at the end of long rope.

     Five hundred years later, Queen Charlotte was given the first zebra to come to Britain. She kept it near Buckingham House. Curious people came there to see it.

 Giraffes have been an attraction at London Zoo since four of them arrived in 1839. One female gave birth to six babies with in five years.

Yaroslavl Zoo

Yaroslavl Zoo was opened on August, 20th, 2008.  It’s situated in

Yaroslavl District. The area of the Zoo has clean ecology.  The landscape of the Zoo is natural, so animals live in natural conditions. The Zoo is very young.

The history of the Zoo is not long.  It was opened in 2008. The first woman- cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova and the leaders of Yaroslavl and region cut the opening ribbon.

 They were sure, that Yaroslavl Zoo which has joined the International Association of World Zoos will be the best!

The first 50 animals were presented to Yaroslavl by Belgrade Zoo. Among them were- birds, zebras, lamas, and deers.

One by one animals and birds came to Yaroslavl Zoo and new expositions were built.                                                    Here is the Ark- the learning centre of the Zoo.

The wonderful world of animals

London Zoo, which covers 36 acres, is home of about 17,000 animals and more than 600 animal species, many of which are endangered: Black Rhino, African elephant, giant panda.

. The territory of the zoo is divided into some areas and attractions with real natural environment to give a better lifestyle to the animals and more realistic experience to visitors.

The Area of Monkeys. Look! They are swinging, jumping, chasing and chattering.

Today many thousand of exotic animals live in London Zoo.

Here you can see lions, tigers, leopards. Some of them have baby animals and it is really funny to watch babies playing, running, jumping and fighting.

Special area “Into Africa.” You can watch zebras, giraffes, okapi, red river hogs and others.

There are a lot of different birds in London Zoo. They are very beautiful.

One of the most interesting areas is a “Reptile House.” It is currently home to various reptiles including lizards, tortoises, crocodiles and snakes.

Now you will see the Aquarium. You can watch different types of fish from seas and oceans all over the world. You even can see sharks during feeding time. They dive for their daily catch.

The wonderful world of animals.

Now there are about 600 animals of 120 kinds in the Zoo.

The first habitants of the Zoo were bears Umka and Toptyshka. Today they are the Zoo emblem. 

The territory is wide. So the life of animals is very comfortable. In the Zoo you can see camels, wolves, kangaroos and ostriches from Africa.

There are nice feeding-rack and houses for animals.

A year ago a family of a deer became large: five baby animals were born! Fellow deer was proud male.

In Yaroslavl Zoo there are exotic animals too.

Most of all the children of Yaroslavl like to visit the place where they can feed some animals from hands.

Here is a Baikal Seal Pup: It has an unusual history:

Zookeepers say a Baikal seal pup named Zaika who has lived in the Yaroslavl Zoo since early May has become a visitors’ favorite.
Local fishermen found the baby seal in a small lagoon in the Irkutsk region. They handed her over to the amateur biologist Yury Karpov, who reared the pup and named her Zaika. Later, Karpov placed the baby seal in a zoo.

There are many interesting animals in the Zoo.
