«The miracles of the Far North»
I live in Noviy Port, small village behind the Polar Circle it can be seen on the old state map of the Russian Federation.
The Natural Icehouse
Come to Noviy Port and you can visit the unique place in our region, our country and all over the world - the Natural Icehouse!
The Natural Icehouse was created in 1950s and its building lasted over 10 years. This great construction was built by political prisoners for keeping fish. The ice caves were chopped in the eternal freezness.
The project's author and the building's head of the Natural Icehouse was Beckmann Gustav Julievich, the German by nationality, he was exiled to Noviy Port from Leningrad in 1942.
The main tunnel’s length is more than one kilometer. Its diameter is about five meters. The permanent temperature is about 15-17 degrees below zero in winter and in summer. You will be impressed how people could create this wonderful construction. The Noviy Port Natural Icehouse is the only, the biggest and the oldest in the world!
The mammoth’s baby Luba
Do you know about the mammoth’s baby Luba? I think that you do. It is the world sensation, which we are proud of!
Luba was found by our Noviy Port’s reindeer breeder Yuri Khudy in May, 2007.

It is 50 kilograms in weight and its height is less than one meter. For researching the place where the mammoth’s baby was found it was organized the expedition of Yamalo-Nenetsky Autonomous Region’s museum of Exhibition complex. Among the members of expedition were the Japanese scientists. The mammoth’s baby was named Luba in honor to the reindeer breeder’s wife. Luba was about four months when it was perished.
Now Luba is situated in Yamalo-Nenetsky Autonomous Region’s museum of Exhibition complex in Salekhard. If you are interested in our Far North miracles come and see, it worth seeing! Don’t miss your chance!
