Geographical position Great Britain is an island state in the north-west of Europe. It occupies the island of Great Britain, the island of Ireland and a number of smaller islands (Maine, White, Channel, Orkney, the Hebrides, Shetland and others). The UK consists of four historical and geographical regions: England, Scotland and Wales, located on the island of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Country's total area is 244.9 thousand square kilometers. The UK has a land border with only one country - Ireland. To the north and west of the country is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and to the east and south - the North Sea and the rather narrow English Channel and the Pas-de-Calais.
