Introduction

     There are about 8 things in the wardrobe of a student, a boy or a girl, such as jeans, a cap, a jacket, a skirt, a shirt, trainers and ,of course, T-shirts. They often have different inscriptions on. Do their owners take into account the meaning of inscriptions, especially if they are written in foreign language, for example in English? The aim of our research is to answer this question.

      *The object of studying is English inscriptions on our students’ clothes.

      *The subject of research is the information of inscriptions.

      *The aim of our research is to establish a dependence of the inscriptions’ meaning on the level of knowing English language. To achieve the aim we needed to solve some problems:

      - to find a definite number of inscriptions on students’ clothes;

      -to translate them into Russian language;

      -to make known the age, main reasons of buying these things;

      -to summarize receiving information and to make a conclusion;

Our work was divided in three stages:

      Firstly we made up the main informative work.

      Secondly we analyzed the meaning and comparison of receiving inscriptions from different points of view.

     Thirdly we formulated the conclusion and put the results in order.

We used a searching and analytical methods.

This work will be useful and interesting for our students. They should pay attention to the translation of inscriptions and use the information in a proper way. This information must reflect real interests of its owner.

2. Main part

2.1. The history of the inscriptions.

         There were inscriptions on clothes many centuries ago. In ancient Greece there were embroideries on the belts. Greeks wrote their names on them. And what about modern inscriptions? Firstly they decorated only workers’ uniforms and showed their status. Then there were the names of designers and their firms. And later there were inscriptions with the definite meaning. Inscriptions are different. They can give us a lot of information; express the attitude to the environment. They can be changed with the age of a person. A child has got some simple or funny word combinations on his clothes. A teenager has got various phrases such as a number of a team or a name of a street. Now every young man has got T-shirts with English inscriptions on them. They should be divided into several groups such as romance, sport, motto, music, cities, designers, ecology, religion and others. They say a T-shirt is a board for slogans.

2.2. Imitation or contribution to fashion

To be usual is not interesting. It’s unfashionable. Young people like to be distinguished. They wear speaking clothes. Can your clothes speak? Yes, they can. For example “Follow me”, “Hero”, “Kiss me”, “ I love NY”.

2.3. We are responsible for inscription on our clothes.

Little children don’t worry about what to have on. But teenagers pay more attention to their clothes. The youth fashion has own tendencies and rules. Young people should treat to inscriptions on their clothes very carefully.  People around them think that these words are said by their owners. Otherwise there is a question “Why do you wear your clothes if you don’t understand and support the words on it?” Thus we are responsible for inscriptions on our clothes.

        Further we’ll consider examples of inscriptions on our students’ clothes.

3. Practical part

We constructed the research of inscriptions on our students’ clothes in the following way.

  1. We found the students had T-shirts with English inscriptions on.
  2. We made a list of the most interesting inscriptions, took pictures of them and asked some questions about:

the age of the owner

the understanding of the meaning of inscriptions

the translation of inscriptions

the reason of buying this thing

the information about possible grammar and spelling mistakes in the inscriptions

We fixed and analyzed the answers of 61 students and made up a table. We divided the results of students’ questioning into several groups.

        According to the fact of our research the most students have got clothes with English inscriptions. Only 75% students know the translation of them. They also note that they pay attention to inscriptions when they buy clothes. The rest found difficulty in translating of inscriptions. There are inscriptions consisting of words without any meaning. We suggested our students that they should think before buying clothes with misunderstanding information. Some teenagers noted that difficulties in translating didn’t stop them from buying of favourite clothes and they didn’t pay attention to the translation of inscriptions. They perceived them as the decoration of clothes. Our research shows that we are responsible for the information on our clothes and it is wrong to hope that people around us don’t know foreign languages and don’t understand the meaning of inscriptions on your clothes. We should remember the famous proverb “Clothes make the man”.

4. Conclusion

     Only 75% of students pay attention to the translation of English phrases. They noted that difficulties in translation didn’t stop them from buying of clothes. 35% of students didn’t pay attention to the translation and perceived them as the decoration of clothes.

     The analysis of collected material showed that the level of knowing English language let our students understand the meaning of inscriptions and use the written information in a proper way.
