The world found out this fish only in 1939, when it was accidentally caught in fishing nets. And only in 2004 scientists could see this fish in its natural environment on the depth of 500-800 meters.

Thanks to the transparent membrane on the head of the fish it can observe what's happening around it.

The Smallmouth macropinna But the biggest surprise is in its eyes. Looking at the picture, guess where they are?

The holes located above mouth are organs of smell. But two green hemispheres are situated inside a transparent head 0f fish ΄ s eyes.

The fish's eyes can rotate. This happens during the hunting, when the fish, noticing the prey, position its body becomes vertical. Slowly floating in the water the fish is looking up. As soon as the fish would notice a tidbit, the fish swims under it and moves the body vertically to catch the prey. At this point its eyes are moving to 90°, to see the prey.
