December Royal Times
International English Language Week is the best opportunity to know more about English language and to prove yourself what you really can. We’ve heard a lot about this competition, its interesting and exciting tasks. So, we’ve decided to take part in it.
OMG, we’ve forgotten to introduce ourselves. Take a deep breath…Your attention is presented by “Big Ben”, the team from Sakhalin. Our form is small (only five students, as you can see), but we’re stronger together. We are like one big head, like big language machine that can do extremely unusual things. So, let’s start!
Today you will learn:
Day 1. Become a researcher
That day was full of information. It was difficult task to answer one of suggested questions. We chose more suitable for us: “Does England need the Queen if in fact the country is ruled by the Prime Minister?” “Of course, she does”, we thought and started our adventure in the world of Queen’s duties. The official royal website says that Her Majesty does not 'rule' the country, but fulfills important ceremonial and formal roles.
In the middle of our way we recognized that all Queen’s decisions and actions about UK are necessary to discuss with advice of her Ministers. In fact she has no any power to rule her country. It would not so stupid to think so. Have you heard expression “word power”? This is it. Queen Elizabeth II fulfills a lot of duties connected with government, church, army and etc.
In our opinion, Queen Elizabeth II is a “face” of UK’s society and country at all. Even she has no real power, she represent her country. Elizabeth II plays important role in different branches of life’s state. And finally, people honour their Queen. They need their Queen. England needs her.
Day 2. To prove your knowledge about Queen Elizabeth II
Doing that task we knew a lot of new information about Queen and Her family. We had read the list of 80 key facts about The Queen to mark her 80th birthday. Some of them were unbelievable! It was exciting to surf the Internet and try to find something. We were surprised to know that:
* The Queen was a Girl Guide (1937) and Sea Ranger (1943).
*The Queen also introduced a new breed of dog known as the “dorgi” when one of Her Majesty's corgis was mated with a dachshund named Pipkin which belonged to Princess Margaret. The Queen currently has four dorgis, Cider, Berry, Candy and Vulcan.
*The Queen learnt to drive in 1945 when she joined the Army.
* Her Majesty’s portraits are on the various bank notes.
And of course, it was amazing to write her Day-diary!
Day 3. Comparison the life of 300-years-ago and nowadays monarchs
That day was full of emotions. We were debating between each other. We had been arguing our opinions for three hours. Frankly speaking, we even have almost fought!!! It was exciting!
So, we decided to compare Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Victoria.
We analyzed royal titles and styles, queen’s popularity, influence on public life, results of legacy and so on.
Both Queens lived through turbulent times, but in the last 50 years we have seen huge social changes in Britain - yet the Queen has kept the monarchy going, despite everything.
And finally our verdict was “The spirit of Victoria lives on in Queen Elizabeth II. UK’s present queen has a sense of public duty equal to Victoria's, and a far higher sense of constitutional propriety because she is generally politically unbiased in a way that monarchs before George V rarely were. Queen Victoria would be proud of her posthumous pupil.”
