Coin circulation in Kievan Rus dates from the IX-x centuries , and the rapid development of coinage began after the process of creating a centralized Russian state , namely , in the FIFTEENTH century . Later came paper money , which were first made by the Chinese . Their detailed description has become known thanks to the famous Italian traveler Marco Polo , who visited China in the late XIII century . Russian money , the history of which goes back as far as the reign of Catherine II, and more precisely in the year 1769, were called banknotes . They more acted as Bank obligations , including receipts , in generating coins . Paper money was first produced at Krasnoselsk factory , and later in Tsarskoye Selo . Already present watermarks . Printing the banknotes was made in the Senate printing office .
