What’s good about a school uniform? What’s bad about a school uniform? The school uniform has strictness which make children study at school more seriously. School uniform makes children more disciplined. It stops us from choosing what to wear when we get up in the morning. There is no difference between students from rich and poor families. Formal style is great! It helps everyone to feel equal. Students can’t express themselves. People feel more comfortable in their own clothes). By the end of the school year it becomes untidy and not pleasant to look at. School uniforms are expensive and most families don’t have extra money to pay for it. School uniform is boring.

Introduction
What is a uniform? According to Longman dictionary, a uniform is a type of clothing worn by all the members of an organization, or all the children at a school. It’s a dress of the same style, materials and color worn by a group.
A school uniform is a standard set of clothing people (usually children) wear when they go to school.
The introduction of school uniform is not a new thing. Many pupils all over the world wear a school uniform.
But is it really necessary? Some people say that wearing school uniform is good, but others do not support this point of view.
The aim of my research is studying the school uniform in Russia and in England.
My tasks of research are:
Methods of research are collecting and studying information, analysis of resources of the Internet, questioning of pupils from Efremkino school, interview.
The history of the school uniform in England
In the 16th century, England was the first country to require school uniforms. School uniforms in England were first introduced on a large scale during the reign of King Henry VIII . The uniforms of the time were referred as "bluecoats", as they consisted of long trench-coat-style jackets dyed blue. Blue was the cheapest available dye and showed humility amongst all children. The first school to introduce this uniform was Christ's Hospital and it is the oldest uniform of any school.
In 1870, the Elementary Education Act 1870 made elementary education available for all children in England and Wales. The popularity of uniforms increased and eventually most schools had a uniform.[1] During this period most uniforms reflected the trends of the age, with boys wearing short trousers and blazers until roughly the age of puberty and then long trousers from about 14 or 15. Girls mainly wore blouse, tunic dress and pinafore later progressing towards the beginning of the 20th century to gymslips.[1][3]
These uniforms continued until the 1950s when after the Butler reforms secondary education was made free and the school leaving age was raised to 15. These reforms encouraged schools to implement uniform codes which were similar to other schools. Distinct "summer" and "winter" uniforms were sometimes required, particularly for girls where dresses were mandated for summer and gymslip for winter.[1]
Today, the Government believes that school uniforms play a valuable role in contributing to the ethos of schools: The Department for Children, Schools and Families strongly encourages schools to have a uniform as it can instill pride; support positive behavior and discipline; encourage identity with, and support for, school ethos; ensure pupils of all races and backgrounds feel welcome; protect children from social pressures to dress in a particular way; nurture cohesion and promote good relations between different groups of pupils.[4]
The history of the school uniform in Russia
In Russia, school uniforms were abolished after the 1917 revolution, but were re-introduced in 1948. Initially, the new uniform was very similar to that in place before the communist takeover. Wearing uniform was made mandatory and pupils were penalized for not following the rules.
The style of Soviet school uniform was modernized in 1962, and since that time was modified each decade. There could be some variations across different Soviet Republics. Boys generally wore dark blue pants and jackets, girls — brown dresses with black aprons and black bows (on special occasions, white aprons and bows were worn). The members of the Young Pioneer organization, wore famous red neckties.
My mother wore a school uniform too. She was a pioneer and wore a red necktie and a badge. I am very proud of my mum. She was an excellent student.
In 1992, mandatory school uniforms were abolished. The idea of school uniforms is actual nowadays. In the village of Kara-Tube, the Stavropol region of Russia, a scandal erupted after the local school administration banned wearing hijabs, or headscarves, for students. On average, 77 percent of Russians supported the idea of a school uniform previously voiced by President Vladimir Putin shortly after the scandal. Today, many schools have their own uniform that students are required to wear.
School uniform in the United Kingdom nowadays
In Great Britain Most British primary and secondary schools require pupils to wear uniforms. Boys wear a white shirt, long grey or black trousers ,jumper or sweater with the school logo on, school tie, black shoes. The color is the choice of the schools. Girls wear trousers or skirts as part of their uniform - typically black, grey, navy, or sometimes brown or maroon. During the summer term girls often wear summer school dresses. Many schools have strict rules on the wearing of make-up, jewellery or fashion clothing.
School uniform in Efremkino School
In Efremkino School uniform was introduced three years ago. Since then all the students wear it. Boys wear a white shirt, a tie, black trousers and a jacket (or a blazer) Girls wear a white shirt or blouse, a skirt with red, white and black lines and a jacket (or a blazer). In winter girls can wear classical straight trousers. There is also a modern-day tradition for girls to dress into brown Soviet-style school uniform for their graduation ceremony. Do we need a school uniform?
Children’s opinions on school uniform differ. Some say they like wearing it, while others prefer to wear a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. I`ve questioned the pupils of our school. 35 pupils took part in questioning.
I asked 17 teachers and 20 parents about a school uniform
29 people think that we need a school uniform . 8 people think that we do not need a school uniform. Parents and teachers think that school uniforms improve discipline, helps raise standards and reduced peer pressure and bullying.
Questioning shows that there are more advantages and disadvantages of school uniforms:
What’s good about a school uniform? | What’s bad about a school uniform? |
|
|
All in all school uniform has advantages and disadvantages, but as for me personally I vote for the school uniform because I presume it convenient for pupils.
Having interviewed my classmates, I tried to draw a perfect school uniform. The main colour of the perfect school uniform is red, blue and beige. The girls would like to choose a skirt, trousers, a pinafore or breeches .The teachers would like to see the boys wearing the ties, our parents want school uniform to be inexpensive and comfortable. Here you can see the results for the girls of our school:
Conclusion
Many students all over the world wear a school uniform. Some people say that wearing school uniform is good, but others do not support this point of view.
Teachers and parents think the uniform helps to keep discipline. It saves time and money. However, most students are against the uniform.
As for me I think that students need school uniforms because it is convenient, practical, and allows students to focus on their studies, it does not show the difference in social status of any student, it increases a sense of belonging and school pride.
