INTRODUCTION

There are certainly many interesting and worthy professions in the modern world, but I think that people should choose the best one for them.

As for me I’d like to choose a prestigious or perspective and enjoyable profession.

The theme that I’ve chosen for the individual project is called «The world of Jobs. Choosing a Career». This area seems to be the most attractive for me because it’s impossible to imagine our life without a profession which is an essential part of human life. Choosing a profession is a very difficult choice. It is very important both for the person and for the society. Nowadays, this topic is very relevant because sooner or later young people have to make an important decision. Choosing a career is not a simple matter, in fact, it can be one of the most important things in our life. You don’t need to rush with a decision. You should carefully consider your abilities and character, take a realistic view of your strengths and weaknesses, pay attention to your parents’ and friends’ advice and take into account your own preferences. Many roads are open before us: technical schools, colleges and universities. Centuries ago there were only a few jobs: people were farmers, bakers, butchers or carpenters. Today there are thousands of different kinds of jobs, and new ones are constantly appearing. No wonder that it is not an easy thing to make the right choice.

The main purpose of my work is to research different kinds of professions, their importance in people’s lives and show young people’s career preferences at present.

To achieve this goal I formulated the following tasks for myself:

• to choose the main types of professions in the modern world and describe them;

• to tell about my future career and my choice;

• to conduct a survey among young people in order to show their career preferences at present;

• to sum up the results of my research.

1 The word «Profession». Categories of Professions

Now in the world there are so many different professions.

The word “profession” came from the Latin «profession», which means “the official occupation, the occupation.” The modern definition of the term is more comprehensive: “profession is a historically arisen form of employment to perform that person should possess certain knowledge, skills, abilities and professional qualities.”

The list of professions is constantly growing. There are new professions, and the old ones disappear, gaining new features in accordance with the general development of technology. Every profession has developed algorithms and technologies, but over time the professional activity must face new challenges. In other words, the old profession must meet the requirements of time.

All professions can be divided into several types:

1.1 Relevant and popular professions

Fashion for the profession is constantly changing: some lose relevance, while others acquire it. In connection with the Internet technology, which is very increased in recent time the most popular professions became those ones that associated with information technologies: first of all programmers, system administrators, web designers.

1.2 Women’s professions

Professions for women, as a rule, do not require great physical exertion and they are associated with training or care. Suitable for women work requires attention to detail, thoroughness, observation. The most feminine occupations are teachers, educators, nurses, conductors, stewardesses, accountants, cashiers, fitness instructors. The men in these positions are rare. Also, many women are engaged in marketing and management (realtors, tourism managers, brand managers), logistics, design (interior design, web-design), psychology now.

1.3 Men’s professions

Men’s professions usually require courage, strong nerves, heavy physical labor. The most male occupations are sailors, pilots, police officers, woodcutters, security guards, firefighters, military men, mechanics, scientists and builders.

Many men are employed in manufacturing, particularly in metallurgy industry, oil and gas, mechanical engineering: electrician, energy, welder, mechanic, technical engineer, and also in information technology: the system administrator, a programmer.

The labor market is going through great changes in recent years. Now women are interested in professions, which were considered purely men before. They are politicians, drivers, specialists in information security etc.

1.4 Dangerous professions

There are many dangerous occupations where people can be injured or even killed. These are mainly male and the most dangerous professions in the world:

• Fishermen (the cause of accidents can be sea storm, cold water).
• Coast guard rescuers (water is very dangerous for the life of people of this profession).
• Drillers oil wells (it’s a dangerous job with materials with increased flammability).
• Electricians of high-voltage lines (in this profession, there is a danger of high voltage).
• Industrial climbers (there is a risk of falling objects or climber from a great height).
• Firefighters (when extinguishing a fire is a great risk of physical injury on that crumbling structure, overheating of the body, poisoning chemicals).
• Miners (there are explosions, cave-ins in mines, methane poisoning, carbon monoxide).
• Woodcutters (working with an ax and a chainsaw requires a lot of care and attention).

1.5 Dream jobs

• Chocolate consultant

This could well be the ultimate job for anyone with even the smallest craving for chocolate – and yes jobs like this really do exist. There are lots of different types of chocolate consultant too: from people that work with high street brands and liaise directly with their outlets to people that work with more niche brands.

• Island caretaker

Everyone lists this but what a job! It was advertised as “Officially the best job in the world” in 2009.  The role was a newly created position designed to help promote the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef to the world. If you’re not lucky enough to land a job caretaking an exotic island then the travel and tourism industry can still take you to some pretty interesting places.

1.6 Bizarre jobs

• Gum Buster

You know when you’re chewing gum and you get that uncomfortable urge to stick it under something? We all do it. A team of cleaners called Gum Busters started back in 1998 when a Dutch chemist created the Gum Cart, a little dry steaming machine that conveniently removes gum from its eclectic locations in just 5 second. That’s pretty quick cleaning considering all the wayward gum that’s out there!

• Fortune cookie writer

“You will soon be asked to pay for a Chinese meal.” This and other gems could be yours for the writing if you can persuade fortune cookie manufacturers of your incredible clairvoyance.

The falls into the same category as cracker joke writer and greetings card message creator, as jobs which sound like fun the first time.

2 Choosing a Career

Nowadays there are plenty of jobs to any taste. Choosing a future career we should consider the following things.

Pay. Is the size of your salary important? Generally speaking it is important. Of course there may be various situations, but if you are going to be independent, successful and wealthy, you have to find a well-paid job.

Further training, promotion prospects and job conditions should also be kept in mind. Just after graduating from the educational institution it is very difficult to find a plum job which will respond to all your preferences. It is usually a monotonous, tedious clerical job, but if you are a capable and hard-working person, you will be offered an opportunity to climb the ladder.

Place of work. You ought to decide whether you want to work indoors (cashier, chemist, librarian, secretary, etc.) or outdoors (driver, firefighter, estate agent, etc.). Your choice may be based on your lifestyle or health condition.

Communication with different people. Meeting and dealing with people doesn't appeal to every person. Some people are not very sociable. On the contrary, they are shy and diffident. Frankly speaking, it is a great talent to have communication skills. If you think you have it, you may choose a profession involving close contacts with people, such as a doctor, a journalist, a lawyer, a guide, a teacher.

Business trips. You should keep in mind that some professions imply travelling all over the world, such as tour guides, scientists, actors, journalists, pilots and so on. It's not always fun. Business trips may last a week, a month and even more. However, if you are young, ambitious and full of energy, you will be able not only to do your job successfully but also see the world.

Aspiration for creative work. If you are a creative person, it's necessary for you to find such a job. It can be a job of an artist, a tailor, a designer or a stylist.

Jobs connected with risk. Such jobs are usually well-paid, but very dangerous. A police officer, a fireman, a bodyguard, a lifeguard — these are the names of jobs which imply risk. Those, who want a rewarding but demanding job and who are ready to devote all their lives to it, may choose this kind of work.

The prestigious professions are the key to success and prosperity, financial independence. List of prestigious professions is constantly changing and those ones which were popular some time ago today have lost their popularity. When selecting an activity many people often ask what the most prestigious profession is.

Choosing a career should not be only a matter of future prestige and wealth. Work should bring real satisfaction; otherwise your whole life will become dull and monotonous.

3 My future career

There are many careers in this world nowadays. Yes, of course, many of them are very important. We won’t be able to live without labors, teachers, engineers, drivers, doctors, pilots and so on. Each of them seems to be so different. I thought many times which job would be suitable for me. Eventually I have decided to be a manager of the hotel service.

In every city there are many hotels. Their number is growing every year.

A hotel manager, hotelier is a person who manages the operation of a hotel, motel, resort, or other lodging-related establishment. Management of a hotel operation includes business management, upkeep and sanitary standards of hotel facilities, guest satisfaction and customer service, marketing management, sales management, revenue management, financial accounting, purchasing, and other functions. The hotel's General Manager is often supported by subordinate department managers that are responsible for individual departments and key functions of the hotel operation.

The main responsibility of the hotel manager is to provide coherence of all the hotel employees, high quality of service, training and disciplining staff.

I choose this profession consciously.

But in order to understand what I need in future, I had to spend a whole year. In 2014 I entered the Medical College at the medical assistant department. Studying at this college I realized that this profession was not for me. When I graduated from this college, I didn’t become a good specialist in the area of medicine.

In 2015 I moved to Krasnodar in order to study at the college as a hotel service manager. My parents and teachers say that I have a tendency to the natural sciences and humanities. I have also good organizational skills, which make it perfect for a manager. Half a year ago I decided that I would become a manager. My parents supported this decision. I want to become a good specialist in this area.

Nowadays being a manager is a perspective career. Besides it is very exciting and interesting. Hotel service is a wide concept. When we speak about the hotel it comes about reservations, about the general situation and the atmosphere of the hotel, also it is the communication with people from different countries. Service in the hotel should meet the expectations of customers. Well, when a guest is happy and expresses gratitude it’s wonderful, but there are incidents when a guest is dissatisfied and in such situations we have to deal with their complaints and solve all the problems. But taking everything "close to the heart" is not worth it.

Hotel personnel must carry out all requests and wishes of clients. Also you should deal with account comments, which the customer makes.

In the hotel there are many different positions: maid, manager, managing director, administrator and many others. After graduating from the college I won’t take so high positions. As for me I’d like to continue my studying in the Institute or University to become a more highly-qualified specialist.

The manager of hotel service should know as many languages as possible. The more, the better. Thanks to this fact it is possible to take a more prestigious position.

In order to be a qualified person, you must be able to resolve internal and external conflicts, be appropriately managed and have communicative and organizational skills.

In future I dream to become a highly qualified and competent specialist in my job. I read a lot of information about the hotel service. For example, I know that the hotel network valued strict observance of various standards from the staff uniforms and the decor of the room to the welcome of customers. In all prestigious hotels there is uniform service guest etiquette. The criteria are the same for all cities and countries.

Of course, the growth of the career ladder won’t be without difficulties; I will obey the stringent rules of managing directors. The main thing is patience, effort and belief that sooner or later I will succeed in the area of hotel service.

CONCLUSION

The purpose of my work was the actualization of the attention to such an important part of our lives as a profession.

The tasks of my project is to examine the theme from two sides: the world of professions and choosing the career.

Choosing a profession in the life of every person is of great importance. This is a choice of life way, the choice of fate. It's a choice that everyone makes in youth age. Confucius said: “The person who found your favorite job, all his life doesn’t work.”

As for me, I want to become a manager of the hotel service.

I like the manager's job, because I need a lot of communication with people and travelling to different places. I find it very interesting! I do not like to stay at the same place and do the same work. I prefer some kinds of various activities.

I choose this profession because I think that I have all the qualities required for success in this specialty, namely:

1) Ability to make decisions for which you need to be responsible;

2) Performance and self-confidence;

3) Communicative skills and the ability to be a positive sentiment towards the other party;

4) Participate in the work of the team, who can provide the improvement of the hotel.

Also studying and receiving relevant knowledge, I may open my own business, improve my financial situation, in the end, to get a promotion on the career ladder by getting an appropriate education. Many doors and a variety of activities which I can deal with will open in front of me.

During my work the survey was conducted among college students.

I asked the students questions such as:

1. What are the most dangerous professions?

2. What are the most prestigious professions?

3. What are the most boring professions?

4. Which professions are the most interesting?

5. Dream Jobs.

According to my survey, one of the most important criteria for the choice of profession is the level of future salary. And this is not surprising. Everyone wants to receive appropriate reward for the honest work; it would be desirable to provide themselves and their families a decent standard of living.

Also during the interview I realized that prestige of the future profession was no less important for the present youth.

In addition we can conclude that students choose their professions by their preferences. And from the chart we can see that dream jobs are the ones that bring pleasure.

As Confucius said: “Select a yourself job to liking, and you do not have to work a single day in your life”. It is true. And then it will not be a hard work, but give pleasure.
