It occupies the British Isles , which lie off the north-west coast of Europe.

The total area of the country is 242.5 thousand sq km. It borders Ireland , France , The Netherlands , Belgium , Scandinavian countries . The Atlantic Ocean is to the north-east , the North Sea is to the west .
