Vincent Van Gogh was born in 1853 in the Netherlands in Grot- Sundert . His father was a doctor in the country. There were 7 children in the family and he was the second child. From an early age he was interested in painting. Vincent Van Gogh

At the age of 23 he moved to Belgium and started painting professionally. He attended drawing classes. One of his first pictures was « Potatoes Eaters » it was painted in dark and gloomy colours .

Then his manner of painting changed a lot. He started painting landscapes and still lives. His pictures became lovely and bright. The most popular are « The Sunflowers » , « Red Grape Fields » and others. Sunflowers Red Grape Fields

Van Gogh was greatly influenced by Pissaro . He is considered to be one of the most popular post-impressionist artist.

He died tragically in 1890. He commited a suicide in a fit of depression.

He often worked in the open air. He took part in a lot of exhibitions. His pictures were not realistic. They were geometric with clear and straight lines, for example « The Gardener » , « The Swimmer » . They were painted in 1911. The Gardener The Swimmer

In 1933 he became seriously ill and died. He was buried in the country near Moscow.
