• When we talk about environment - we mean everything around us that could affects all life on the earth, including: air, food chains, the water cycle, plants, animals and other living beings .

Our environment really needs our help. From our planet we get the most important

and potent things for our life. They are: oxygen, water, food, shelter and warmth. But over the years our population has grown and grown. This has a huge impact on the environment of our planet. This impact has caused changes which have affected our atmosphere:

1. By polluting it (too much smoke, carbon dioxide and other gases);
2. By making holes in the ozone layer which protects us from some harmful rays of the sun.

Every aspect on the earth has basic needs. People have caused so many changes that many living beings can’t get what they need. We begin to realize that everything we do affects us too.

How can you help? Here are a few simple and really affecting things:

1. Use less power. For example, use the new light bulbs. 15 watts in a new bulb is equal to 75 watts in an old one.
2. Make less rubbish. For example, recycle clothes, toys, books and games by giving them to another family or a charity shop; save computer paper by printing on both sides.
3. At school you could: to make a butterfly garden by planting the kind of flowering native shrubs that they like, put your rubbish into a bin.
4. If you have a pet you could also: clean up after your dog when you go for a walk. I know it seems awful and disgusting but if you use a plastic bag you will keep your hands clean, as well as ground where others walk.
5. Make less impact on the environment: if you CAN'T find a bin, take your rubbish home, don't just throw it away.

Now you see that there are no really complicated ways to help our environment stay a little bit more fresh and alive. Try it on.

• Trees absorb odors and pollutant gases and filter particulates out of the air by trapping them on their leaves and bark.
• In one year an acre of mature trees can provide enough oxygen for 18 people.
• Trees cool the city by up to 10°, by shading our homes and streets and releasing evaporating water into the air through their leaves.
• Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Trees reduce UV-B exposure by about 50 percent, thus providing protection to children in school campuses and playgrounds - where children spend hours outdoors.
• Studies have shown that patients with views on trees out of their windows heal faster and with less complications.
• Tree plantings provide an opportunity for community involvement and empowerment that improves the quality of life in our neighborhoods.

SLIDE 4:

• Ecology has become one of the major philosophies, not only for people but for countries as well. And since our generation has to do something different to leave the better Earth after us, many countries and city governments took action and started to do things differently. Eco-friendliness has become a huge part of cities’ lives.

1. COPENHAGEN:

Copenhagen turns out to be Europe's greenest city. First of all, it is worth mentioning that Danish people has been called as the happiest nation in the world for many years. There people are in peace with themselves and the environment around them. Copenhagen is by bicycle. That logically means that CO2 emission is scanty.

2. CURITIBA:

     This city got one of the eco-friendly cities by 70% city’s waste recycled. They develop one of the biggest bus and public transport system. They are trying to plant 1 million trees around highways.

3. SINGAPORE:

 First of all, a huge revolutionary system of public transport helped this city to get the green title. The number of water wastage is pretty small.

4. SAN FRANCISCO:

This city is the first in the United States which introduced the colored recycled bins, recycling system at homes and in workplaces that make it easy and accessible.

5. CAPE TOWN, JOHANNESBURG (DURBAN)

Three towns in AFRICA share the last place. It is really hard to choose only one. For example, Cape Town and Johannesburg have the most green spaces in the whole continent.
