Introduction

The research “How to succeed in the exam” is relevant due to low exam results in our region. The goal of our research is to give advice to all the people who are preparing to take different kinds of exams in their lives. Currently many exams are becoming more and more complicated, which cause more and more problems for students. As we can see from the results of the State Russian Exam not all students pass their exams with the high score. We want to find an alternative way how people can prepare for exam successfully.

Subject        Average score the SRE 2016

Russian language        64,3

Mathematics        51,9

Chemistry        56,1

Biology        52,8

Physics        51,2

Computer Science        53

History        48,1

Geography        49,6

English language         64,2

The problem is that with the introduction of many new exams, which are aimed at testing and improving students’ knowledge, the average knowledge of the subjects studied at schools is catastrophically decreasing.

The objects are the students in the process of preparing for the exams and the students who have passed the exam.

The subjects are final examinations in different countries.

There are no guidelines which are directed to help pupils get through their preparation for the exam.

The goal  is to give our advice to pupils on how to pass their exams.

The tasks of the research are:

     1) to collect and study information about different exams;

     2) to conduct a sociological survey in order to compare

     3) to make our own suggestions for the pupils

Methods of the project:

     1) collecting information.

     2) theoretical analysis.

     3) sociological survey.

Final Examinations in Russia.

General State Exam– is a form of the state final certification for nine graders. It is necessary to take the GSE in order to continue to study in the 10th grade or to be admitted to a vocational school.

We believe that the study of this issue will allow us to understand why all the students of our country have to take the exam and how to increase the likelihood of scoring good marks in the GSE.

The GSE consists of five exams:

  • 2 basic exams (Russian language and Maths)
  • 2 additional exams which a student chooses from the following list:

1)Physics

2)Chemistry

3)Computer science

4)Biology

5)Geography

6)History

7)Social Studies

8)Literature

9)English language

10)German language

11)Spanish language

12)French language

According to the statistics, the most popular additional exam is English. Social Studies exam takes the second place, and Computer Science exam is the third.

The exam is considered to be passed if the total score is not lower than satisfactory.

With the exam successfully done, each student receives a document which is called «Attestat» - a certificate of basic general education – confirming the fact of learning and having grades in all subjects studied.

Final Examinations in other countries.

In England examinations for the compulsory education course passing centrally and for admission to the university is necessary to pass a special two-year education and pass the high-level exams. The special independent organizations develop and conduct these exams, the Ministry of Education only provides guidance on the content of the program. Most universities in the country require passing two-three high-level examinations.

One of the most complicated system of the selection students into the colleges and universities is in USA. There is no common programs of studying and exams in USA. The only one testing of educational content of middle school graduates is amount of studied courses for the university. The most popular and common exams in USA which are taken into account when entering the university are SAT  (Scholastic Achievement Test) and ACT (American College Testing):

  • SAT is developing by College Board in common with the Educational Testing Service. Test consists of three parts and tests the knowledge and skills in English language and Math. SAT can be passed seven times a year.
  • ACT is developing by organization named American College Testing Program also with ETS. It consists of four separate tests in the following subjects: English, Math, Reading and Natural science. The most prestigious universities demand surrender of the profile tests on the subjects.

We would like to give you the following tips on how to score good marks in your exam.

Here are 10 principals you should follow if you want to succeed.

  1. Build Interest.

You need to love and have interest in the subject you want to study. Otherwise, you will not be able to memorize all the information that you need to study.

  1. Plan your time

You must be aware of the fact that success in the exam does not come unexpectedly. You should start preparing at least 3 months before the exam date. It is necessary to prepare every day for at least 1-2 hours with a small break. It would also be a good idea to take every third day off and to relax.

  1. Use an effective method to prepare.

Of course, the best way to prepare is to hire an experienced private tutor, who will assist you with your preparations. If you are not able to do so, there are some alternative ways. The first way is to take a course (e.g. online or face to face ). The second way is to buy a special software application and go through all the modules of the exam.

  1. Make the most of your free time.

Before the exam you should change your daily routine. You should not watch TV or go out with friends for 2 weeks before the examination. Even if you go for a walk in the park you should take a book with you depending on the subject of the exam.

  1. Eat Healthy food

In the period before passing the exam try to eat healthy and balanced. Protein which contains in products will nourish and sustain your brain. Subsequently, receiving and remembering information will be much easier. Also, you should enrich and diversify your food with such vitamin full products as vegetables (cabbage, carrot) and fruits (bananas, oranges, etc.). They will help you to be cheerful and energetic. In this period it is good to eat porridges. They are rich in vitamins and microelements, which activate brain activity.

  1. More sleep.

You better less learn than less sleep. Normal sleeping (8-9 hours) not only relieves mental fatigue and refreshes the body, but also tidies memory. Information you get through the day moves from memory to permanent memory when you sleep. Cramming answers at night before the exam, the student finally remembers them only the night after, when they will no longer be needed.

  1. The experience of the senior classes

Talk with those students, who had already passed the same exam, as you will. They can share their experience, which will help you to orientate on the examination.

  1. Think positively

If you will always think that you can not pass the exam satisfactory, then it likely will be as you think. You should adjust yourself in a positive way. It will help you to be less nervous before the exam and pass it on a maximally possible score.

  1. Be less nervous

Your nerve cells which were destructed in the period of preparation will not be recovered any more. You need to think about your health and do not forget that your health is more important than thinking and worrying about the exams. Your stress will not help at the exam. Therefore, just relax and be confident in case you will not forget all the information you had learnt.

  1. Chocolate

Right before the actual exam, you can eat a couple of slices of chocolate - it will help to concentrate on the test. Chocolate is an excellent anti-depressant, it is delicious and healthy and helps to cope with stress.

Our survey

We made our own survey among the students of our class. They were asked some questions about how they had prepared for the exams, which subjects had they chosen and why, what they had been feeling before and after exam. After the survey we obtained the following results:

1.Most of the students (67%) prepared for the exams with the private tutors, 27% prepared on their own and about 4% took a course. So, the best way to prepare and to achieve an excellent result is to hire a private tutor.

2.Most of the students had chosen Social studies and English subjects for their exam (about 65%). Next, the most common are Social Science, History and Literature.(20%)  After all of that comes Chemistry, Biology and Geography. Therefore, if you have not chosen any subjects yet, you can choose one of the most popular ones and be sure that you will find many ways to prepare for them in the internet or in the books.

3.Most of the students 54% feel stressed before the exam, others 29% feel confident and 17% just nonchalant. You should not be too nervous , it is better to feel confident and relaxed.

4.Most of the results are compared with the feelings about them. So, many pupils got good and excellent marks and they feel happy about that. Do not think about it too much. If you did all that you could your results will be good.

Conclusion

After analyzing all the information that we collected in the process of  studying this content we want to give our own advice based on our experience how to succeed in the exam.

  1. First of all you need to analyze your abilities on subjects that you had chosen. If you are not sure that you can prepare for all the subjects by your own you should take a tutor or tutors for the most difficult ones.
  2. Secondly, if you want to go to the college, choose subjects, which are required for admission to college you had chosen. Also, if you want to keep studying in high school, choose subjects which will be easier to pass on the excellent mark. Last year we chose English and Social Studies, and passed them easily and good.
  3. Moreover, try to combine your friends and your studying. Even when you have free time, read books, develop your vocabulary, train your skills on some apps in the internet or on your phone. Do not waste your time! If you prepare thoroughly you will succeed in your exam.
  4. All in all, do not be too nervous. Everyone can pass the exam with due preparation. It is just one of the life stages you must pass before the end of receiving education
