Introduction
"Every country has its national river and Russia has the Volga - the longest river in Europe, the Queen of rivers - and I was one of the many who went to bow to her Majesty River Volga" - the famous French author Alexandre Dumas once wrote.
No Russian can hear the word "Volga" without picturing the river's wide, plangent waters, gracious ships, and hovering ivory gulls. Mother Volga's place in every Russian heart is assured and celebrated in the famous song of the Volga boatmen, “Mighty stream so deep and wide, Volga, Volga, our pride”.
7000 years ago, the river's lower reaches were the cradle of Indo-European culture. Since then the Volga has played a central role in Russian history and folklore. The great bend in the river around Samara was the haunt of the colorful 17th century Kazak bandit Stenka Razin, while the lower plains were the scene of the Pughachev rebellion, romanticized in Pushkin's novel "The Captain's Daughter".
Today almost 50 million people live in the Volga basin, one-third of Russia's population, and many of Russia's greatest cities call its banks home. It remains a key transportation route, navigable with the help of giant locks and canals.
Rising from a small spring in the Valdai Hills northwest of Moscow, the river flows southeast in a great arc over 3690 km before spilling into the Caspian Sea. Although industrialization has marred its traditional clarity, much of its length is covered in a matchless wild beauty. The Volga Delta is a must-see for anyone interested in wildlife. Its marshland climate has become a refuge for beavers, otters, and countless birds from herons to the great bald eagle. Another must for nature-lovers is the Samara Bend National Park, famous for its woodland hikes and stunning views of the Volga.
If you wish to relax on a summer holiday, there are countless places along the Volga's lush green banks. The extraordinary sense of tranquility that permeates from the river at sunrise has long captivated Russian artists. As the sun warms up, you can take a dip in the river as many young Russians do or simply sunbathe on the sandy beaches like those at Samara.
City on the Volga-Bulgarians.
A quaint Slavic country on the southern tip of the Balkans, famed for its beaches, roses, and ski resorts. This is probably the first thing that’ll come to mind when you hear “Bulgaria.” But have you heard about the other Bulgaria? The one in the middle of Russia? In fact, the nation of Bulgaria has a lesser known cousin hidden in the hinterlands of the autonomous Republic of Tatarstan: Bolgar. Although it may be less famous, Bolgar has no less an illustrious history, it’s one of the most ancient cities in Russia.
Bolgar is not just a regional monument. It’s an official UNESCO World Heritage Site acknowledged as an integral part of the history of the entire Russian nation. In fact, Bolgar was the first protected heritage site in all of Russia.
The best way to visit Bolgar is from Kazan. Hydrofoils travel to the site daily along the picturesque Volga. The historical site lies conveniently along the Volga, with a mini-port and an archeological museum. Most of the ruins left in Bolgar are from the period when it served as the capital of the Golden Horde. Mausoleums, palaces, mosques and Orthodox churches dot the terrain. Be sure to visit the Cathedral Mosque, the Black Chamber, and the East Mausoleum, the 700-year-old burial chamber for Bolgar nobility. Also be sure to check out the remains of the vast Khan’s palace and the hidden well of Gabdrakhman, whose waters are said to have healing powers. Bolgar’s newer buildings are equally as impressive. The “Memorial Sign,” a shrine to the adoption of Islam, houses the largest printed Koran in the world. (The book weighs 500 kg!) The massive White Mosque is a reconstruction reaction of its ancient predecessor which was destroyed in the 15th century. The expansive complex is a true gem of Tartar architecture.
So, the next time you visit Russia, be sure to take a detour to the Autonomous Republic of Tatarstan and discover the other Bulgaria, which comes out to be far more important than you would have thought.
More than 400 hundred steps up
Tetyushi, one of the oldest towns of the Republic of Tatarstan stands on the high bank of the Volga River, 140 kilometers from Kazan. It is a unique place: The temper of the times and a rich collection of museums give the town its unique style. Officially, the history of Tetyushi dates back to 1578, when Russian governors after the capture of Kazan and the fall of the Kazan Khanate founded there a guard post to protect the Volga region. Located on the right bank of the Volga, it had a strategic defence position. Traces of fortifications have remained until now. Over time, the settlement lost its importance, turning into a provincial town. In a small cozy town merchant buildings preserved in excellent condition: The building of a gymnasiums for boys and girls, the house of zemsky (local community) doctor A.N. Bogolyubov. The house of merchant PV. Serebryakova hosts the Museum of History of the Tetyushsky district — it will be of interest to enthusiasts of classical tourism. In general, among the historical and architectural sights a special place belongs to the first stone building of the city — the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan, built in 1773, destroyed in the Soviet period and restored in 1990. 13 kilometers from the town there is a manor complex «Dolgaya Polyana», the former manor of counts Molostvovs. Up there you will have a beautiful view of the Kuibyshev reservoir and ancient Great Bolgar. The meadow is considered to be a mystical and anomalous zone — amazing things happen there: Despite the neighboring woods, it has not been overgrown for several centuries, magnetic devices are «go off scale», clocks go wrong, pictures taken by digital cameras inexplicably disappear. But, people feels good there. Blood pressure becomes balanced, heart calms down, wounds heal and people recover from cold-related diseases.
You can get to Tetyushi by car or by bus, and if you arrive here by boat, you can climb the steep and longest staircase on the Volga River. The staircase has about 400 steps and gives the guests an unforgettable view of the wide river surface.
Native city-Balakovo
The city of Balakovo is located along the left Bank of the Volga river on an island territory in the Volga region. "Volga Venice" attracts with its abundance of greenery, water expanses, coniferous forests and sandy Islands. The highlight of the city is its location. One of its parts is located on a small island. If you look at the overall well-being of the city, everything seems beautiful here-lots of parks, sports and recreation complexes, theaters, museums, decent cafes, beaches and places to relax. But if you look deeper, you will find some unpleasant things. There are many places to stay in Balakovo. For example, you can cross the Volga from the old pier by boat for a fee and land on a desert island. Previously, larger vessels with a large number of vacationers plied here. There are fewer people here now, but the island is still picturesque. Here is clean water, sand and forest. The ski resorts on the right Bank of the Volga are also picturesque, with excellent skiing. Among the city's bright attractions, you can also note the club "Turbina". Well, the name Gordeev knows every balkovec.
Balakovo is a city where it is pleasant to walk along the embankment, relax in nature and be treated in sanatoriums. Yet tourism is not as well developed here as in the same Bulgarians or Tetyush. But it is worth visiting this city, and residents will again visit museums and remember the iconic part of our house.
Survey among Internet users and teachers and the results of this survey
I decided to conduct a survey of Internet users and teachers and ask them a few questions to find out whether small cities are popular.
1) What small city on the Volga would you like to visit? Why?
2) have You ever been on a river cruise?
After interviewing 100 people, I made a schedule of their responses.
The first question was 40% positive and 60% negative.
Many people don't know small towns, and most positive responses come from people who live in a small town. When asked why, many teachers point to nature and architecture.
The second question was answered positively by 37% of respondents, and negatively by 63%. 5% suffered from "seasickness".
Based on the survey, we can conclude that young people do not know about the existence of small cities, except only about the nearest ones, and adults 25 years and older want to visit different cities and enjoy them
