Introduction

The great fight still goes on. The question is: should students wear school uniform? There are two sides to the debate. Some people say that all schools should introduce uniforms. Others are sure that school uniforms are old-fashioned. There is no clear answer. That`s why I decided to research this problem. Why teachers and some parents want students to wear a school uniform? When and why was it designed? Why do students hate it? And is there an alternative to school uniform?

The problem: the need to introduce a school uniform or obligatory dress code in our school

The hypothesis: I suppose school uniforms are in the past and the necessity to replace it by the dress code

The aim of my project is to attract attention to the appearance of our students and offer some variants of dress code

Accordingly to the aim I have put the following tasks:

  1. To find the information about the history of school uniform and modern rules of wearing school uniforms in different countries ;
  2. To conduct a survey among senior students of our school, parents and teachers ;
  3. To prove that it is more effectively to have rules of dress code at our school;
  4. To design variants of dress code for our school;
  5. To create a booklet for senior students.

Research methods:

  • the survey of senior students, parents and teachers about school uniform ;
  • analysis of the survey;
  • plotting the diagrams;
  • learning the literature and materials from the Internet on this theme.

Object of the research: school uniform

Subject of the research:  the necessity of introduction a school uniform or obligatory dress code in our school.

Project produce: Informative booklet for senior students

Steps of the project:

  1. Motivation step
  2. Preparatory step
  3. Information and operations step

  1. Motivation step

School and school life is very important to me. Here we not only acquire knowledge but also learn to live in a society. We get the first experience in communication and establishing relationships. We make our first steps towards adult life. And I believe that our appearance and clothes play an important role in this aspect. But now when I come into my school I see a lot of students wearing in casual clothes. They look like they are going to the disco, gym or walking in the yard. I asked myself if we could change our school image and if we need a school uniform. Do we need a school uniform? What does it mean “a school uniform”?

  1. Preparatory step

On this step I defined the project theme: «School uniform: pros and cons»

The aim of my project is creation of the booklet with the variants of dress code for our school.

I spoke to my teacher. We worked out the plan and ways of my actions.

  1. Information and operations step

I decided to answer the following questions:

  1. Do we need a school uniform?
  2. What does it mean “a school uniform”?

I began to search the Intern and looked for the information from the history of school uniforms in our country.

A uniform is a set of standard clothing worn by members of an organization while participating in that organization1s activity. Modern uniforms are worn by armed forces and paramilitary organizations such as police, emergency services and security guards in some workplaces and schools and by inmates in prisons.

Few people know that the fashion for school uniform came to Russia from England in 1834, first for boys and then for girls. The boys sported in caps with emblem of the gymnasiums, tunics, overcoats, jackets, trousers and black boots. Form of girls was very strict: brown long dresses with aprons but from tissue high- quality. After the revolution form was not thought about until 1949. In 1962  the boys were dressed  in grey woolen suits, and in 1973-in suits made of blue wool blend fabric, with an emblem and aluminum buttons. In 1976, the girls also began to dress a new uniform: dark brown dresses with aprons. And only in 1992 the school uniform was cancelled, having excluded the corresponding line from the law “on education”.

Our grandmothers and mothers wore when they were schoolgirls.

I conducted the survey and I asked 30 senior students and 30 parents and teachers the question:

Would you like the senior students of our school wear uniforms?

The results of my research has revealed the following:

83% of growns –up and 10%of students answered that they were for school uniform.

(Supplement 1 Diagram 1)

17%of growns –up and 90% of students    were against school uniform

(Supplement 1 Diagram 2)

All persons taking part in the survey named the advantages and disadvantages of school uniform.

The advantages:

  • students needn`t think what  to wear every morning (10 persons  )
  • students in uniforms can concentrate better on their studies (25 persons )
  • uniform makes students feel more serious and responsible (25 persons )
  • social differences are not seen (9 persons )

(Supplement 2 Diagram 1)

The disadvantages:

  • school uniform is old-fashioned, uncomfortable and often made from synthetics (7 persons )
  • students in uniforms look the same (20 persons )
  • uniforms don`t give the students opportunities to express their individuality  and they might start using make-up early, behaving badly, or wearing bright accessories as a reaction (22 persons )
  • uniforms are not cheap for families with some children (3 persons)
  • uniforms are in the past (20 persons)

(Supplement 2 Diagram 2)

Then I analyzed the data and began to do the next step.

4. Practical step

According to the survey, all opinions were very different. That`s why I decided to find the compromise and solve the problem. I searched the Internet and found out that students in some countries (e.g. in Germany) don`t wear uniforms. Every school has its own dress code. It seemed me to be the best idea for our school. I made up my mind to design dress code for our school.

Dress code first of all-is the relevance and understanding of the rules adopted in certain cases. It is the way that people accurately identify people "in their circle". Dress code is set by international rules: for business events — business dress code, secular formal events — formal dress code, for everyday life — casual dress code. These rules clearly regulate the description of clothing for each situation, place and time where the clothing is appropriate. School dress code refers to the varieties of business dress code-everyday business style. These are clothes that are appropriate to wear in the morning during the whole working or school day. It should be moderately formal, moderately elegant, not distract attention from the learning process and be comfortable.

According to the rules of every day dress- code boys can wear:

  • a suit or a jacket and trousers of solid colour
  • a shirt of  light shades — plain, striped or with a pattern of "business cell"
  • a  jumper over a shirt
  • a tie of calm colors and patterns
  • black or brown business shoes with or without laces

  • socks to match trousers or shoes
  • a thin belt in black or dark brown
  • discreet business accessories: watches

Girls can wear:

  • a  business suit: a jacket  and a skirt, a vest and a skirt,
  • a classical dress or a sundress
  • a blouse of light colors or monochrome with a calm geometric pattern
  • a knit jumper with a crew neck relaxed tones
  • business shoes without heels or low heels 3-4 cm
  • transparent or solid color tights
  • discreet business accessories: a hair clip, a watch, a brooch

    5. Concluding step

5.1. Designing of the project.

At this stage, I have entered into the system all the data on the project and formed a project plan. And then I created an informative booklet for senior students.

The booklet is a sheet advertising the products that are to obtain the final form of the bend in various ways. The part is printed in expanded form, and then the sheet is bent along one or more lines.

The aim of the booklet is to give the necessary information laconically and attract readers` attention. That`s why my booklet is bright and attractive. (Supplement 3)

Creating the booklet, I tried to observe all necessary rules:

  • my booklet is so planned that all columns are easy to read;
  • I have fulfilled all the conditions of the task, and the information is available on all six pages;
  • the images I have chosen are relevant to the content;
  • in my written presentation there is a suitable style and sense of audience;
  • I used recommendations on computer text design and colour to create an attractive, neat and interesting brochure. I used a suitable font size and line spacing to improve readability.

5.2. Self-rating.

Choosing the theme of my project I thought about the actuality and importance of the problem. I defined the aim of my project and put the tasks which helped me to solve the problem.

Working on the project, I used new working methods such as analysis, survey for which I asked the necessary questions.

I analyzed the results of the study to build diagrams, drew conclusions and created an informative booklet with useful advice for senior students.

The booklet is made carefully, have aesthetic qualities (beauty, harmony).

While working on the project, I improved my skills in searching information on the Internet and learned to build and analyze diagrams.

I believe my project is easy to understand. It is interesting, logical and contains some new information

But to tell the truth, I had some difficulties with translation of   unknown words related to the design procedure of the project steps.

Conclusion

As a result of the work done, the following conclusion can be drawn: the aim of the work has been achieved, the main tasks have been fulfilled.  I conducted a survey among senior students, made diagrams, and analyzed them, created a booklet and drew conclusions. I showed the students how to look great without wearing a school uniform.

In conclusion I would like to say that through appearance we reveal our soul.

Stylish person is a carrier of high internal culture. He is aware of his attractiveness, but it is never arrogant.

Famous fashion designer Vyacheslav Zaitsev said:

"Children should be from childhood to attach to the fact that the suit is something more than just clothes. It's a means of communication. From how you look, depends on how you will communicate with others. To improve your own self-esteem, school dress code can provide a huge service, because it allows you to dress stylishly, although strictly."
