Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol was a Russian novelist, short story writer and playwright of Ukrainian origin. Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol was born in 1809 in Sorochintsy , Poltava Governorate, Russian Empire. His father Vasily Afanasyevich Yanovsky , died when Gogol was 15 years old. From 1821 to 1828 he was studying at the gymnasium of higher sciences in Nizhyn . In 1828 Nikolai Gogol moved to St. Petersburg. In 27 years old he went abroad. He died in 1852, at the age of 42 in Moscow. Gogol was one of the first to use the technique of the grotesque. His main works: "Dead Souls", "Inspector", " Taras Bulba ", "Marriage", "Overcoat", "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka " and others. These stories, and others such as "Diary of a Madman", have also been noted for their proto-surrealist qualities. According to Viktor Shklovsky , Gogol's strange style of writing resembles the technique of defamiliarization .

His early works, were influenced by his Ukrainian upbringing, Ukrainian culture and folklore. His later writing satirised political corruption in the Russian Empire (The Government Inspector, Dead Souls). Many writers and critics have recognized Gogol's huge influence on Russian, Ukrainian and world literature. Gogol's influence was acknowledged by Mikhail Bulgakov , Fyodor Dostoevsky, Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin , Franz Kafka and others. Gogol's personality attracted the attention of many cultural figures and scientists. Even during the life of the writer, conflicting rumors spread about him, enhance by his isolation, a tendency to mythologize his own biography and a mysterious death that gave rise to many legends and speculations.

Diary of a Madman, published in 1835, is considered to be one of Gogol's greatest short stories. The tale centers on the life of a minor civil servant during the era of Nicholas 1. The story shows the descent of the protagonist, Poprishchin , into insanity. The end leaves you with a curious fact. Diary of a Madman is an outstanding novel because you can see the becoming of a common person into significant one. "Diary of a Madman", the only one of Gogol's works written in first person, follows diary-entry format. The story was suggested by one of Gogol's Petersburg friend, during tea parties at his apartment. For many hours, he told Gogol about the psychology of madmen. Materials from these stories were later included in "Diary of a Madman".
