Squirrels spend most of their time in trees . The tail is up to 30 cm long , almost equal to the body . The fluffy and long tail plays the role of a rudder and a parachute when jumping among the branches The ears of squirrels are usually large , long , and stand erect on top of the head . Squirrels have tufts of long hair on their ears . In most cases , the brushes are black or red . T hey serve not only for beauty but also for hearing and in winter they insulate the ears

Food In coniferous forests , they feed on cone seeds and pine nuts .
