Introduction

All children adore New Year celebrations. They like New Year for magic and gifts. They look forward for New Year for the whole year. But in December the waiting becomes very difficult and sometimes stressful. For example, my little cousin always crosses out dates on the calendar waiting for the holiday.

The problem: waiting for the New Year for children becomes very tense

The aim of my project: to make waiting for New Year for children brighter.

Accordingly to the aim I have put the following tasks: 

1. To find the information about advent calendar in Britain;
2. To conduct a survey among pupils of our school, ;
3. To prove that an Advent calendar is useful for children ;
4. To create an Advent calendar for pupils.

Working methods:

• the survey of pupils about an Advent calendar ;
• analysis of the survey;
• plotting the diagrams;
• learning the literature and materials from the Internet on this theme.

1. Motivation step

At the beginning of December you can see a lot of decorations everywhere. Shelves in shops are full of different decorations, presents and surprises. Nowadays you can find different kinds of advent calendars

Advent calendars are the first of the decorations that you can see in homes on the eve of the holiday. A surprise is hidden behind the date in each box or envelope. It can be a colorful picture or an interesting Christmas poem. Thus, children open one door every day and count down to the advent of Christmas.

Many parents put little gifts there, for example: sweets or souvenirs. Children look forward for the next day to find a little pleasant gift.

And I decided to entertain my cousin and to make her expectation of the New Year brighter.

2. Preparatory step

On this step I defined the project theme: «Advent calendar »

The aim of my project is to make waiting for New Year for children brighter.

 I spoke to my teacher. We worked out the plan and ways of my actions.

3. Information and operations step

I began to search the Intern and looked for the information from the history of Advent calendar in Britain. (Supplement 1)

I conducted the survey and I asked 25 pupils the question

1. Is the New Year a holiday for you? (Yes/ No)
2. Are you looking forward to the New Year? (Yes/ No)
3. Do you know what an Advent calendar is? (Yes/ No)
4. Would you like to get an Advent calendar for the New Year? (Yes/ No)

The results of my research has revealed the following:

1. 100% of pupils answered that the New Year is a holiday for them

     2)  96% of pupils looking forward the New Year / 4% of pupils not waiting(Supplement 2 Diagram 2)

    3) 92% of pupils what an Advent calendar is /6% of pupils don’t know(Supplement 1 Diagram 3)

    4) 100% of pupils would like to get an Advent calendar / 0%  answered the opposite

Then I analyzed the data and began to do the next step. (Supplement 1 Diagram 4 )

5. Practical step

 I searched the Internet and found different examples of Advent calendar and gift and things that parents put in them. (Supplement 3)

Then I began my work.

Thistly, make a list of gifts I am going to create. (Supplement 4)

Secondly, I prepare all materials for handicraft.

And finally, I began to create the gifts for my Advent calendar.

5. Concluding step

5.1. Designing of the project.

At this stage, I finished working on the produce of my project.

Christmas calendar, Advent calendar is a traditional calendar in Europe for tracking the time from Advent to the arrival of Christmas. By tradition, this is a postcard or a cardboard house with opening windows, where each cell can contain a candy, a chocolate bar, a tea bag, cosmetics, a figurine, a note with wishes, a prayer or an excerpt from Scripture, as well as other gifts. Calendars also come in the form of bags, bags, handbags or bundles hung on a ribbon. Also often there are puzzles and other games in calendars. The Christmas calendar can be universal and consist of 24 days (from December 1), or of the number of days corresponding to Advent this year (Advent can start from November 27 to December 3). In any case, the calendar ends on December 24, Christmas Eve according to the Gregorian calendar.

 I created Advent calendar with gifts adapted to Russian traditions of  celebrating New Year.

 I have entered into the system all the data on the project and formed a project plan. And then I created the computer presentation.

5.2. Self-rating.

Choosing the theme of my project I thought about the actuality and importance of the problem. I defined the aim of my project and put the tasks which helped me to solve the problem.

Working on the project, I used new working methods such as analysis, survey for which I asked the necessary questions.

I analyzed the results of the study to build diagrams, drew conclusions and created an Advent calendar.

The Advent calendar is made carefully, have aesthetic qualities (beauty, harmony).

While working on the project, I improved my skills in searching information on the Internet and learned to build and analyze diagrams.

I believe my project is easy to understand. It is interesting, bright and entertaining.

But to tell the truth, I had some difficulties with translation of   unknown words related to the design procedure of the project steps.

Conclusion

As a result of the work done, the following conclusion can be drawn: the aim of the work has been achieved, the main tasks have been fulfilled. My Advent calendar decorated the waiting of my niece and created the atmosphere of holiday

According to the Christian church calendar, Advent is the period of preparation for celebrating Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. In Britain Advent begins on the first day of December, four Sundays before Christmas. The word ‘аdvent’ is derived from the Latin word for “coming”.

The first sign of Christmas in a British home is the children's Advent calendar. It serves as a countdown to Christmas Day. An Advent calendar is a card or a cardboard house with twenty-four little doors or windows, one to be opened each day from the 1st of December until Christmas Eve. Each door of the calendar normally conceals a Christmas picture or a short Bible verse, a chocolate or a small toy. Every morning children open a new door to find a tiny daily treat inside.

The tradition of Advent calendars dates back to the middle of the 19th century, when German Protestants drew chalk lines on doors or burned candles to count the days from the 1st to the 25th of December. As for the first handmade Advent calendars, there were two contenders for them. According to the Landesmuseum in Austria, the first one was produced in Hamburg in 1902 by a protestant bookshop owner. Others claim that the first hand made calendar was made in Germany in the late 19th century for a child named Gerhard Lang. Having grown up, Lang began designing printed Advent calendars. However, with the outbreak of World War II, cardboard became rationed in Germany, so in the 1930s Lang was forced to close down his business. After the war, a few printing companies revived the tradition, and mass production of the calendars was continued.

The calendars have become favorites amongst children and adults around the world because Advent is marked by a spirit of hope, expectation and joyful anticipation. There are lots of weird and amazing variations of modern Advent calendars, including everything from cheese, cookies and LEGO to candles and beauty products.
