Palace The capital of Buryatia – Ulan-Ude ( before 1934 – Verkhneudinsk ) – is an amazing city , it is called the cradle of Russian Buddhism , the Gateway to Asia and even a boozy paradise . And each title the city is well deserved . Ulan-Ude is the largest and oldest East Siberian city , where everything is permeated with national color , where guests are greeted with famous oriental hospitality and delicious national cuisine . We have our own flag and anthem . On the next page I’ll show you the flag

History The history of the city began with a small Cossack winter hut , built in 1666 in a picturesque place on the banks of the Uda River . Very soon , the winter hut became a prison , and then the city of Verkhneudinsk , which rapidly grew and developed due to its convenient location on trade routes with Mongolia , and with the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway , Verkhneudinsk became the largest industrial center . And the current Ulan-Ude , located in a valley among mountains and dense coniferous forests , attracts tourists with the beauty of the surrounding nature , rich history , magnificent architecture , special oriental flavor and the opportunity to get acquainted with the culture of Buddhists .

Soviet square Soviet Square is the main square of Ulan-Ude , formed in the second half of the 18th century , when the construction of the Odigitrievsky Cathedral began . Over time , administrative buildings grew along the perimeter of the square , theaters were built . Here , constructivism snacks deserve special attention – the House of Soviets , the house of the merchant S.I. Rosenstein – the first building in Ulan-Ude in the Art Nouveau style , built at the beginning of the 20th century , now it houses the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the Belarusian State University , and the Radio House , built in the spirit of the « Stalinist Empire » with a corner tower with a spire and two dials . Directly in front of the building of the House of Soviets , there is a monument to Lenin , but not in its usual form – in full growth , but only his head , by the way , is very impressive in size – the height of the monument is almost eight meters ! It was precisely for its dimensions , as well as the original artistic solution , that the head of the leader of the world proletariat got into the Russian Guinness Book of Records as « Lenin’s largest head .»

Monument « Mother Buryatia » According to the tradition that has developed in Rus ’, it is customary to greet guests with bread and salt , the Buryats have a similar custom , only a sign of hospitality and friendliness here is a hadak – a ritual long scarf of Buddhists , which is considered a universal gift for any occasion . Let’s not break the tradition and start our journey through the capital of Buryatia , going to the monument « Mother Buryatia », where we will be hospitably met by a woman with a khadak in her hands . Initially , it was located near the building of the Opera and Ballet Theatre , but several years ago it was moved here , to the Selenginsky bridge , now « Mother Buryatia » meets guests heading to the city from the airport , for which it received the unofficial name of the Buryat Statue of Liberty , by association with the monument in NYC. This is the highest monument in the city – the height of the pedestal is eight meters , the statue itself has the same height .

Theatre square The Theater Square adjoins the Square of the Soviets with its main decoration – the Opera and Ballet Theater . G.Ts . Tsydynzhapov – a famous Buryat actor , director , playwright . In general , the whole square seems to be created in order to admire it – the theater building impresses with its grandiose scope , architectural idea and stylish decor with a touch of national flavor . Near the theatre , there is a sculpture “ The Beauty of Angara ” dedicated to the main performers of the ballet of the same name – Larisa Sakhyanova and Petr Abasheev , who played the main roles in the production , where the main theme was the love of Angara and the Yenisei . Right in front of the main entrance there is a light and music fountain , of course , in all its splendor it can be seen only at night , when multi-colored lights are turned on , but it is very good during the day . There are flower beds and benches around , if you wish , you can sit down and relax , enjoying the beautiful view .
